The international arena all ready

Barry Drea had the honour of being the first ever winner in the brand new all-weather Ring Four, taking home first prize in the Selwood Equine Novice Stakes. His win came aboard Charlie Okehurst, and the pair finished ahead of Alice Dunsdon and Jemima PD in second place.

The new arena, featuring the Andrew Bowens surface used at Greenwich for the London 2012 Olympic events, provided excellent going and was universally praised by riders. As well as a top class jumping surface, the ring has some permanent features such as a water splash, steps and a Dyke, making it the perfect arena for Derby stars in the making!

Olympic gold medallist Ben Maher had a successful day at Hickstead, winning the Hickstead Annual Grade C preliminary round class on Mr Bean. Joe Owens from Co Tipperary proved he’s a force to be reckoned with in the young horse classes, winning both the Five Year Old warm-up class with Future Storm and the Six Year Old warm-up with Cabriole.

Today the action gets underway in the International Arena, with the Stoner Jewellers Vase and the Bunn Leisure Derby Tankard forming the highlights of the second day of the show.
