Her opening ride on Tuesday, second day of the team dressage championship at Caen, was a stunner. The judges scored 81.529 per cent for Bella Rose. German Isabell Werth has six world championship titles since 1994, five Olympic gold medals since 1992. Her chestnut mare is only 10 years old, with only four shows this year before the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014. Hearing an expert like her saying she has found “a real diamond”, it might be true.
Isabell Werth on her horse, Bella Rose and what makes her special:
“Her beauty, her movement, her character, her sensitivity, the ability for piaffe and passage. I have never had a horse like her. She is so beautiful and proud and has so much charisma. I saw that in her when she was three and now it shines.”
On her ride in Ornano stadium:
“I was surprised how calm she was. Very often her first trot is hurried but today she waited quietly for every one of my aides. Normally I ride her twice in the morning with only a short warm up before the ride. But today because of our early start I had to change this routine and it worked. The mistake in the zig zag travers was my fault.
On her strategy for the Grand Prix Special:
“I have nothing to loose and will risk more than today. We’ll see.
On finding a very special horse of a life time:
“It is difficult to find something really special and you should always look for a Gigolo or a Bella Rose. But you can’t always wait for a star. You might wait all your life then.”
On age:
“I am only 45 and not the grandma of the sport. There are others here older than me. But I have the experience and I know the ups and downs of the sport that younger ones might still have to discover. I am getting older, but Bella Rose is still young.”
