In Switzerland several new laws concerning animal welfare entered into force as from 1st January 2014. One of the new laws prohibits the so-called Rollkur or hyperflexion of the horse’s neck. This training method is a practice in equestrianism defined as flexion of the horse’s neck achieved through aggressive force and is banned by the FEI. The technique has been controversial for some time in equestrian circles. Despite the controversy, the technique has been used by dressage and show jumping riders.

Switzerland is now the first country in the world that has introduced this kind of law. Hopefully more countries will follow in the future.
