Beezie Madden is queen of Kings for second time

Aug   3   2015

The USA’s Beezie Madden won the prestigious Longines King George V Gold Cup for the second consecutive year, becoming the first back-to-back winner of the class since 1962.As the reigning victors, Beezie and the 13-year-old Cortes ‘C’ started favourites for this year’s renewal, and today they looked just as strong as they had 12 months ago. In 2014, she became the first lady winner of the class and today Beezie made history once again by becoming the first female rider to win the class in consecutive years. The 52-year-old rider obviously meant business after Friday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, in which she jumped-off for the US team, but had an uncharacteristic 8 faults. “It’s quite an honour to win it back to back,” said Beezie. “Friday’s jump-off was not my finest moment, but I learned a little from that as he likes to jump left and I took too sharp of an angle and didn’t compensate. I know he’s amazingly naturally fast and that I could leave strides out, like the right turn to the vertical and at the second last fence, so I really tested him there and was able to coast home a little. I knew there were a few fast ones behind me, so I had to respect that, but I didn’t want to run the wheels off and have what happened on Friday.”

Cortes obviously relishes the famous turf of the International Arena. “He really prefers grass over sand – he really loves it here,” Beezie added.

Kelvin Bywater’s 1.60m course certainly posed a challenge today, with some of the world’s top riders not completing the track, including Guy Williams and John and Michael Whitaker. The double of gates after the water jump was particularly influential, causing 22 out of the 42 combinations to fault.

Six riders made it through to the jump-off, including Beezie and her fellow American Todd Minikus, Penelope Leprevost (FRA), Jur Vrieling (NED) and two of Britain’s brightest young talents, Jessica Mendoza and William Whitaker.

Jur Vrieling set the pace with a clear in 49.54sec, but Beezie then knocked more than 6sec off the time to take the lead. Todd had four faults, before Jessica attempted to net a home win and came incredibly close – finishing 0.3sec quicker, but knocking the very last fence to end up in fourth. William Whitaker was last to go, but he was nearly a second in arrears of Beezie’s time with one down, finishing in fifth place.

Jessica Mendoza – who was reserve for Friday’s Nations Cup team – was unlucky not to win and truly marked her card as one to watch on the international stage. But competing in this historic 109-year-old class, which was only opened up to lady riders in 2008, didn’t phase her at all. “I wasn’t really that nervous, but my Dad was more nervous than I was – he kept going on about how this was the most prestigious class and how he’d love us to win it!” she said.

In the Underwood Supreme Pony Championship, the title went to Susie Eddis and Beat The Boss, the winner of the BSPS Supreme Working Hunter Pony Championship, while the British Horse Society Supreme Horse Championship went to top producer Jayne Ross and the hunter Time 2 Reflect.

Today saw the Longines Royal International Horse Show reach its conclusion, and indeed the 2015 international season has now drawn to a close. But the All England Jumping Course will still play host to a number of major events this year, including the Hurstpierpoint National Schools and Pony Club Jumping Championships (6th August) and the All England Jumping Championships (3rd-6th September). The International Arena will also play host to the showground’s first music festival when the inaugural Boomerang Hickstead is held on the 12th and 13th September.

For a high res version of the above image email press@hickstead.co.uk. About Hickstead: The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead in West Sussex was founded in 1960 by Douglas Bunn, who had dreamed of creating a venue that could rival those on the continent. In 2010, Hickstead celebrated its 50th anniversary, and has become known as the home of British Showjumping. The showground has been the venue for a number of World and European Showjumping Championships over the years. It now hosts two major international shows each year – the Equestrian.com Hickstead Derby Meeting and the Longines Royal International Horse Show; plus a national show in September known as the All England Jumping Championships.

FEI European Championships Aachen 2015: 13 gold medals, strong riders, fantastic mood

04th Aug 2015

The FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 are going to be big. Very big: 30 nations, 475 athletes and more than 1,654 sport and show horses. These are just some of the figures that the organisers presented at a press conference at Aachen’s Town Hall one week before the European Championships kick off.

Carl Meulenbergh, President of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e. V. (ALRV), organisers of the event, can’t wait for the Championships to begin: “Everyone is extremely looking forward to it. I am convinced that the ALRV and the city will offer the visitors a magnificent Championships event.” 13 gold medals will be awarded in the disciplines jumping, dressage, driving, vaulting and reining from August 11th-23rd. Two riders, for whom this dream could become reality, are the show-jumper Daniel Deußer and the dressage rider, Matthias Alexander Rath. They revealed which targets they have set themselves for Aachen. Deußer, who is currently number two in the world rankings, has set himself big goals in Aachen. Not without good reason: The last time a German team won in Aachen was in 2008, the European Championships are to change this. “Our aim is to win the gold medal here in our own country. However, I think many teams share the role of the favourites, for example the Dutch, Belgian and British teams. It is going to be exciting.” And his personal form? “I was and still am in very good form. A further advantage is that my horse Cornet d’Amour simply feels at home in Aachen. So, I think my chances of a top placement are very good,” was his optimistic appraisal.

Matthias Alexander Rath, who wants to celebrate a comeback in Aachen with Totilas, has the same hopes. In the big stadium in front of the huge crowd. “The German team is the defending titleholder, what’s more in his own country. So, of course, one’s own expectations are high.” Team gold doesn’t have to be just a dream – and individual gold? “Here, we will have to first of all keep our eyes on Charlotte Dujardin, she is the best rider in the world at the moment. Kristina Sprehe and Desperados are also in world-class form,” stated Rath.

“For many nations, the European Championships are a further qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio,” explained Frank Kemperman, Chairman of the ALRV, which further enhances the sporting significance of the event.

It is definitely going to be exciting. In the city centre too, where, parallel to the FEI European Championships, a diversified supporting programme including a wine festival, music, talks, entertainment, a big wheel, medal award ceremonies and public viewing will take place. “The whole of Aachen will celebrate the European Championships on the stages on Münsterplatz, the market square and Katschhof. The market stage builds a direct bridge to the Soers,” the Lord Mayor, Marcel Philipp, announced.

Tickets are still left for all days and disciplines, but they are running short for some of the events. “Only a few tickets remain for the Opening Ceremony and for the final days of the jumping and dressage,” stated Frank Kemperman. The media interest in the FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 is unabated. Michael Mronz, General Manager of the Aachener Reitturnier GmbH, announced that over 800 journalists will be on-site – incidentally from all over the world, not just from Europe. 30 hours of sport will be broadcast on ARD, WDR and ZDF, most of which will be live.

The digital offer has also been further expanded. Whether in the form of a virtual camera flight, multimedia graphics or short videos on the social media channels – the European Championships are thus also going to be a virtual experience. The centrepiece is the Aachen2015 app, which is available as a free download from the stores. Tickets can be ordered at www.aachen2015.de or from the ticket hotline (+49(0)-241-917-1111).

Kentucky Summer Classic Horse Show Wrap-Up: July 27 – August 2

04th Aug 2015

Alison Robitaille has traveled to the Olympics as a first alternate, competed at the World Equestrian Games and won team silver at the Pan American Games, but in recent years, as she busily brings along young horses and two young children of her own, she has been continually knocking on the door of a grand prix win. On Saturday night at the Kentucky Horse Park she knocked the door all the way down and rode away with an impressive victory in the $50,000 Kentucky Summer Classic Grand Prix, sponsored by GGT Footing.

“I’m really so excited. It’s been a long time since I’ve won a grand prix,” Robitaille said. “I’m so proud of my horse. I got her at the end of her 7-year-old year and sort of stepped her up into the grand prix. I’m just really proud of her.”

Alison Robitaille and Cassinja

The mare that Robitaille speaks of his Cassinja, a 10-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by Robitaille’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone. The pair of Robitaille and Cassinja was the ninth in the field of 41 to try their hand at the Florencio Hernandez-designed course set in Rolex Stadium, and they were the first to execute it without fault.

At the conclusion of the first round, six more combinations would join them on the clear list, advancing seven total on to the jump-off. As the first clear, Robitaille was also the first to return, and she laid it down again, finishing faultless with a time of 55.339 seconds.

“I was thinking going in, ‘it’s a long jump-off.’ So I wanted to put some pressure, but I wanted to really make sure that I was clean,” Robitaille said.

While Robitaille’s time seemed like it could be beatable, her strategy greatly paid off in the end.

Lucas Porter and Sleepy P Ranch’s Doma Sue returned next, finishing on five faults in a time of 58.633 seconds, which would end up being good enough for fourth as the next two to return did not fair quite as well.

Both Scott Lenkart, on Fleur De Lis Farms’ Ziezo, and Blythe Marano, on Riverview Farm’s Quabelle, fell victims to refusals on course. Ziezo’s refusal would result in a finish effort of 10 faults in a time of 63.834 seconds for he and Lenkart; Marano and Quabelle would be eliminated from the jump-off after Quabelle stopped twice at the fourth fence of the short course.

Sharn Wordley and Barnetta, owned by the Sky Group, came next, finishing clear but on two time faults after electing to take a slightly longer route to the last fence, finishing on a time of 59.259 seconds.

Wilton Porter and Paloubet, owned by Sleepy P Ranch, followed Wordley, but the refusal bug would strike for a third time in the jump-off phase, resulting in Wilton electing to retire and finish tied for sixth with Marano.

From there the final chance to topple Robitaille’s time was in Juan Ortiz’s hands with Dulien Van De Smeets, owned by Synchronicity Group. It looked like Ortiz had it all the way to the end, but as he tripped the timers the scoreboard flashed 53.38 seconds – just tenths off of Robitaille’s winning time.

4.8.2015

SAUGERTIES, New York (August 3, 2015): McLain Ward – hot off his gold medal win at the 2015 Pan American Games – and HH Carlos Z, owned by Double H Farm, took first place out of 29 entries in Sunday’s $100,000 ULCERGARD Grand Prix at HITS-on-the-Hudson VI.Ward and HH Carlos Z went last in a six-horse jump-off. The first three riders in the jump-off each had four faults from single rails. Laura Chapot, on Mary Chapot’s ISHD Dual Star, went fourth and earned the first clear round in 42.524 seconds. Mary Manfredi went fifth on Magnus Orfeo, owned by Great Span LLC, and had a clear round in a careful 47.812 seconds.

Ward’s ride was faster than Chapot’s. Entering the ring, he and HH Carlos Z finished the shortened course in 40.095, shaving 2.5 seconds off the leading time to claim first.

“The course was very good, I thought,” said Ward. “Difficult, but really appropriate. I was lucky to have had three horses in [the Grand Prix]. My first two jumped very well but were a bit unlucky [with rails in Round 1], but Carlos is kind of an old glove for me. I know him very well, and if he jumps clear, he normally has a very good chance to win. He’s very fast, and very careful and very experience and he performed beautifully.”

Anderson Lima, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, designed the course. HITS-on-the-Hudson continues August 26-30 with Week VII, and September 2-6 for HITS Championship, the Richest Weekend in Show Jumping, culminating in the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix CSI-5*, presented by Wells Fargo.

Karen Polle and Bottom Line Win $10,000 Brook Ledge Open Welcome Week VI

Going ninth in an 11-horse jump-off, with six clean jump-off trips  before her, Karen Polle knew she and Bottom Line had to focus on speed if they wanted to win the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper 1.45m Classic, presented by Vetera® XP Vaccines on Sunday at HITS-on-the-Hudson VI.

“She’s probably the fastest horse in the class, so I basically just have to stay out of her way and let her do it. And it worked out,” said Polle, after her win, in which she bested the second place competitor by more than two seconds out of a total field of 28 competitors. “I love competing here, so it was nice to win.”

The lead changed hands several times throughout the jump-off. Rounds three through five were each clear and faster than the previous competitor. Third-place finisher Adrienne Marciano and her Laspari went seventh and finished in 39.736, the fastest time yet. Lucy Deslauriers on Hamlet, owned by Lisa Deslauriers, who ultimately finished second, went next and finished in 38.864 to set the new Great American Time to Beat.

Polle and Bottom Line went after Deslauriers and Hamlet, and completed the course in a blazing 36.494, 2.37 seconds faster than the previous ride. The penultimate entry retired and the last entry went clear but in a slower time, earning Polle and Bottom Line bragging rights and the blue ribbon.

The Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic is held each week at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York, and is a qualifier for the Vetera® XP Vaccines $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix at the HITS Championship September 2-6.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS HEAD TO AACHEN THIS AUGUST FOR TWO WEEKS OF UNPARALLELED EQUESTRIAN COMPETITION

$

Aug  4  2015

04 August 2015, Aachen, Germany - When Europe’s elite equestrian talent comes together to compete for champion’s title, it creates an unforgettable atmosphere, but when it takes place at the continent’s finest, most prestigious venue, it is un-missable.For the first time, the FEI European Championships in Aachen, Germany, this summer (11-23 August) unites five equestrian disciplines – Show Jumping, Dressage, Driving, Vaulting and Reining. Only the historic showground on the outskirts of this beautiful town in western Germany, with its outstanding facilities and ability to accommodate a 40,000 plus crowd, could host such a unique event.

ROLEX TESTIMONEES AT THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

They will face the toughest opposition in front of some of the largest crowds many of these athletes have ever seen. The Rolex Equestrian Testimonees will be striving to lead their own countries’ teams to glory.

Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat, who has proved time and again that he is incomparable under pressure, is determined to add a European Championship title to his tally.

“My horse is going well and it has been a good year for me so hopefully this will continue at Aachen. We will keep working hard and do the best we can possibly do.” said Guerdat.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Germany’s leading lady rider, who soared to victory in the Rolex Grand Prix at Aachen in 2005, knows Aachen better than any other. Having won the title of European Champion in 2007, Meredith will be well-equipped to tackle its demanding courses in the white heat of competition; “It’s a really unique place and the home of equestrian sport”, Meredith commented.

Kevin Staut, one of the most elegant horsemen on the circuit, already knows  the sweetness of European Championship victory. He was crowned champion in 2009 – nothing less than a second win will suffice.

Rolex’s Dressage Testimonee, Isabell Werth, has won 11 European gold medals in addition to seven at World Championships – including in 2006 when they were held in Aachen. She will not miss a chance to add to these in Aachen, where her extraordinary record includes 10 Grand Prix victories.

“I always enjoy competing at the Europeans. I will never forget my first individual win at Donaueschingen in 1991 on Gigolo when I was a young rider. There was little pressure on me to win so I had nothing to lose. I just had to go out and do my best. It was my first win at a competition of that size and level. It was amazing.” said Isabell.

ROLEX INTRODUCES

Rolex is proud to welcome the newest rider to its family of Testimonees, Bertram Allen, from Ireland. At only 19 years-old Allen has proved he has maturity beyond his years. In 2014 he became the youngest ever rider to compete in the show jumping at the World Equestrian Games in Caen where he placed in the top 10. He will be looking to make an impact as he prepares to compete in his first European Championships and will no doubt be riding the horse that has helped him to achieve so much already, his grey mare, Molly Malone V.

Bertram was one of five riders in the Young Riders Acadamy in 2014 sponsored by Rolex. The aim of the Young Riders Academy is to assist show jumping young talents in training and preparing their careers as future professionals in the sport. It gives rising equestrian stars the opportunity to embark on a six-month ‘tailor-made’ training programme.

VYING FOR VICTORY

Riders know that this intensely electric atmosphere will inspire them to perform at the very peak of their ability, but that it will also demand exceptional horsemanship skills to contain the excitement of their equine partners and allow them to produce their best work in such a dramatic venue.

Rolex is proud to support an occasion where the values that the leading luxury watchmaking brand holds dear – courage, precision, empathy, sportsmanship and passion – will be so clearly demonstrated.

FEI European Championships Aachen 2015: 13 gold medals, strong riders, fantastic mood

Aug 4  2015

Interview Juan Matute Guimon – Spanish newcomer with big dreams

Aug 4  2015

17-year old Juan Matute Guimon excited everyone at the European Championship for Junior and Young Dressage Riders in Vidauban/France at the beginning of July. Only 15-year old German Semmieke Rothenberger already seemed to be the winner oft he Freestyle scoring over 80 percent. But Juan, son of Spanish dressage legend Juan Matute, was even better in the end catching the gold medal.

In this interview he talks about his amazing only eight year old horse, about his life in Florida and his dreams for the future.

You won the European Championships freestyle – a surprise to many. How did you experience riding the freestyle? Was it just a perfect day?

Due to the extreme temperatures in Vidauban and the young age of my horse, we had to make a perfect strategy in order to keep the horse fresh and motivated until the last day. The first day we aimed for a very light test with no risks, because as a team we had no chance to be at the top. I placed 7th and was very close from the riders above me. The individual test I definitely rode for the medal but was “unlucky” and placed 4th. We were decimals from bronze!

My 4th place in the individual caused a big expectation the next morning since I was the last rider to go.

The day of the freestyle, Dhannie and I cantered around the ring with the attitude of a champion. I knew that the degree of difficulty was so extreme that I had to be really focused and determined. I could feel the pressure, but the only thing that went through my mind as I raised my hand for the music was “Its now or never, let’s do this.” The feeling in the ring was unbelievable, Dhannie felt like never before. He wanted to win as much as I did. We were ready.

What can you tell us about your horse Dhannie Ymas? He is very young. What makes him so special?

Dhannie is a Hanoverian 8 year old gelding and this is my second year riding him. His attitude, talent and ability to learn quickly is what makes him so special and different from the others. He is a very ambitious horse that loves to take on a daily challenge and in the barn he is an absolute teddy bear. He MUST have everyone’s attention…

What does your horse like and dislike?

Dhannie’s highlight is the canter. He has a lot of fun with the flying changes and extended canters. On the other hand, staying still in the halts is something we still need to work on.. He is already showing big talent for the passage/piaffe and I get the feeling that he loves it. He’ll moving to GP U25 soon!

Your freestyle was quite impressive. Where did you get the idea from? Did you have help with the music and putting all this together?

The freestyle was a bit of a family project. My father designed the choreography, my mother chose the music and “Dressage and Music” (a company in Spain that compose and make freestyles for top riders like Edward Gal and Beatriz Ferrer Salat) tweaked things out and worked on putting everything together smoothly. After many attempts and different versions my father designed the one with the biggest degree of difficulty. We worked on this freestyle a lot, fixing and making constant adjustments in order to have THE freestyle.

You are part of a riders family. Maybe you can tell us a bit how you grew up with horses?

I was around horses ever since I was born. My father being a three time olympic rider, loved the fact that I was attracted to horses and soon bought my sister and I a pony. We started riding in eventing and shortly after we began competing. I remember having so much fun and driving my parents crazy because I would go full canter and jump over obstacles with no control I was 8 years old then. In the coming years I would place 1st multiple times in the Spanish National Championships for ponies in eventing. It was not until we moved to America in 2008 that I started riding in Dressage.

Your father is such a famous dressage rider. Is it your goal to also compete at the Olympics?

Yes. I have many goals and challenges that I want to take on, but becoming an Olympic rider like my father and follow in his footsteps has been my biggest dream since I was very little. This dream motivates me daily to improve and worker harder!

Was your win in Vidauban especially moving also for your famous father? You were the first Spanish rider to win the European Championships…

Of course. We’ve worked really hard to make this dream come true. I feel really proud and thankful. This victory means the world to us and I think that it’s also a big motivation for many riders in the world that are my age. Our victory proves that EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE and that if you work hard and dream big you can do it!

You are based in Florida I read. Why there? Is your family also living in Florida?

Yes, we have been living in Florida for 7 years now. We had a tough experience back in 2008 during the olympics in Beijing and my dad had big pain in his hip so he decided that he wanted to stop competing and move to America where we already owned a house so that my siblings and I could work on improving our english and also with the hope that with time, we would all heal from the pain in our hearts from what we went through when qualifying to go to the olympics.

How does a typical day for you look like when being at the stables and with your family?

My typical days are quite busy! I ride from 8 until about 2, then 3 times a week I go to a physiotherapist who helps me stretch and loosen up my body in order to prevent future injuries. Afterwards I attend to school from 3:30 to 7:30. This school is used to work with athletes like me that train on a daily basis and travel a lot due to competition. They are very flexible with school hours and always motivate you to stay focused in your sport but still enjoy learning and work on your studies. Right after school I jump in the car and drive to the gym where I work on cardio and bodyweight exercises. I mainly swim, run and bike as my cardio. Almost no time for eating! (laughs) Then in the weekends only riding and enjoying some time off with the family and friends.

What do you like to do when you are not riding?

I don’t have many hobbies, but I do enjoy to travel and visit different parts of the world. I love music, I always try to find time to play the guitar. I sometimes grab a book and read, but I constantly find myself going on a day dream about competing with my horses in big events in the future. (laughs)

What do you especially like about riding dressage?

What I treasure the most about dressage is that in order to succeed you must believe in your horse and build a strong bond that gets stronger the more you know each other. It’s all a big journey in which you keep improving. Being a perfectionist is awarded, elegance and discipline is required yet you must be patient and determined. Throughout the journey you learn that you must make a lot of sacrifices and be 100% dedicated to your passion. I love being a dressage rider and although I miss the adrenaline from eventing, I would never go back. I’ve found my sport.

What plans do you have fort he upcoming months of 2015?

For the upcoming months our priority is to keep the horses fresh and motivated in order to start the season in January 2016 with full power. Since most of my horses are “graduating” next year, we will have to do some national shows to qualify them for the international shows.

Do you have a special philosophy of life?

My philosophy of life is to be happy and share my happiness. To love life, be thankful and to work hard in order to reach your dreams.

What do your horses mean to you? What is special about them for you?

My horses mean the world to me. They have made me the rider I am today. I improve as a rider and as a person each time im with them. They keep me humble but at the same time allow me to dream. They are always there for me, we are a team.

Do you have a wish on your list you certainly want to be fulfilled one day?

Although I have many goals and challenges I want to take on, my ultimate dream that I want to fulfill sometime in my career as a rider is to reach my full potential.

Interview: Alexandra Koch

05th Aug 2015

Top Call Farm is proud to announce its support of Stadium Jumping, Inc. and the all-new show series, the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival, which made its debut July 1.

Top Call Farm is owned by the well-respected team of Greg and Jessica Crolick. Located in Clarkston, Michigan and Ocala, Florida, the Top Call Farm team operates a nationally acclaimed, top-quality, full service professional horse training, boarding, and sales program. The farm offers hunter/jumper riding instruction for all levels, from beginner through advanced, and its owners are eager to continue to provide top-tier services to current clients and accept new riders, owners and students.

Previously headquartered at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club, the Crolicks recently made the move to nearby Clarkston, where the new farm is located.

“It is a beautiful and easily accessible location, Jessica Crolick said. “The new facility for the farm is state-of-the-art, especially for Michigan and is probably one of the nicest facilities in the state. We are fortunate to be able to call it home at Top Call Farm.”

As Michigan-natives, the Crolicks are familiar faces in Traverse City, having made the northern trek consistently over the years for summer competition at Flintfields Horse Park.

The Crolick’s Top Call Farm

“We have been attending the Traverse City Shows since their inception years ago and have been loyal attendees since,” said Jessica Crolick. “We of course want to support such a special show in our home state. Traverse City itself is a little gem. Although we are working hard for horses and clients at the shows, we try to get out and enjoy all that Traverse has to offer.”

Greg Crolick, considered a top hunter professional, won the WCHR Developing Pro Challenge at the Capital Challenge in 2013. The Crolicks and their Top Call Farm have earned many awards, accolades and championships over the years. While at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival, the team has accumulated a number of strong performances and top showings in the multiple hunter rings and in numerous divisions.

“We are so grateful to Greg and Jessica and their Top Call Farm for sponsoring the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival,” said Matt Morrissey of Stadium Jumping, Inc. “It means so much to have their support.”

05th Aug 2015

When Europe’s elite equestrian talent comes together to compete for champion’s title, it creates an unforgettable atmosphere, but when it takes place at the continent’s finest, most prestigious venue, it is un-missable.

For the first time, the FEI European Championships in Aachen, Germany, this summer (11-23 August) unites five equestrian disciplines – Show Jumping, Dressage, Driving, Vaulting and Reining. Only the historic showground on the outskirts of this beautiful town in western Germany, with its outstanding facilities and ability to accommodate a 40,000 plus crowd, could host such a unique event.

Enjoy the Laughter and With Applause Kick Off Opening Day of 2015 USEF Pony Finals With Strong First-Day Lead

05th Aug 2015

Morgan Ward is no newcomer to the USEF Pony Finals, and although she had not planned to attend the 2015 edition of the competition, she was recently presented with an offer she could not refuse. Dr. Betsee Parker asked Ward to ride Enjoy the Laughter, and on the opening day of the competition, the duo did not disappoint, winning first place in the Large Pony Model, and racking up enough points to lead the way on opening day.

Morgan Ward and Enjoy the Laughter took the first day lead in Large Pony division at the 2015 USEF Pony Finals.

I just started riding him a couple of times at home, and shortly after they asked me to show him,” Ward explained. “I was told that he always wins the model, so it was my good point. He is a beautiful pony overall.”

Ward continued, “There were a lot of ponies out there, so it felt great to be able to win. I was a little bit nervous because Dr. Parker has a lot of ponies on hand, and having her ask me is a great opportunity. I had a good feeling going in. Hopefully we keep it up for the over fences phase.”

At 17 years old, Ward is bittersweet about her eighteenth birthday next week, knowing that she will be closing a successful chapter in her life to begin her career as a professional rider.

“It’s sad in a way because I have so many junior rides, but I am going professional next year and I cannot wait to start that life,” Ward elaborated. “I was not going to come at all this year, but then Scott [Stewart] asked me to show for Dr. Parker and my sister [Lindsey Ward] asked me because she has a Large Green Pony. It is still a good time being here.”

Ward currently sits atop the leader board in the first position, just ahead of Emma Kurtz and All My Love, also owned by Dr. Betsee Parker. Ward leads with 519.35 points, with Kurtz hot on her heels with 513.36 points. The final division standings for the large ponies boils down to tomorrow’s over fences classes, which kick off beginning at 11 a.m. in the Walnut Ring at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Ward explained, “I feel confident going into the over fences because he rides a lot like my junior hunters. He goes slow, has a big step, jumps great and has expression, so now it is on me.”

Emma Kurtz and All My Love placed third in the model and eighth in the under saddle to finish second in the Large Pony division for the first day of competition.

Kurtz captured the third place in the Large Pony Model, as well as the eighth place in the under saddle to earn enough points to return as the penultimate rider tomorrow afternoon.

It was first-time U.S. Pony Finals competitor Katherine Kemps, of Austin, Texas, who captured the blue ribbon during the under saddle with Occhio. Kemps is making her first appearance as an exhibitor, and she exuded confidence as she gushed over Occhio, the bay pony who clinched the first place during the Large Pony Under Saddle.

“He is probably my favorite pony that I have every ridden,” Kemps said. “He is super sweet and is probably one of the most loving animals I have ever met. He hugs my groom, Manny, every morning.”

Katherine Kemps and Occhio won the Large Pony Under Saddle.

Kemps continued, “I am really excited right now. It hasn’t set in yet, to win at Pony Finals is very exciting. It has been a year and a half now of working with Occhio, but he really stands out. I think he just has his own way of moving. He is so calm every time I am on him. He is so well put together.”

Currently, Katie Ray and Rockaway, owned by Ramble On Farm of Malvern, Pennsylvania, sit in the third position going into Wednesday’s over fences and division championship, while New York’s Lily Ezrow and Empire’s Victory are fourth. Whitney McKinley of Macon, Georgia, and Just My Style sit in the fifth place, and Taylor St. Jacques with Glynhafan Re Kestral, owned by Peacock Ridge LLC of Greenwich, Connecticut, round out the top six.

Sophia Calamari Duplicates Efforts to Return to Winner’s Circle in Small Green Pony Hunters

In the Small Green Pony division, Sophia Calamari, no stranger to the U.S. Pony Finals winner’s circle, rode With Applause, owned by Jessie Spade of Terrell, North Carolina, to two high-ranking finishes in the model and hack portions of the division. The pair earned the first place in the under saddle and the red ribbon in the model to secure the spot at the top of the leader board headed into the second day of competition, a situation with which Calamari is all too familiar.

Last year, 14-year-old Calamari, of New Milford, Pennsylvania, rode her own pony, Smitten, to near identical placings in the Small Green Pony classes, and eventually took the overall prize. Now, her seventh trip to Lexington for the Finals, the young rider has picked up a new ride in With Applause, but as of yesterday, that was not the case.

‘Colby,’ as he is known in the barn, was pegged to be ridden by his owner in the Finals this year, but an unfortunate injury prior to the start of competition led to the need for a replacement rider, and luckily Calamari was available. Although she picked up the ride last minute, Calamari had seen the pony go before and came into the day with some knowledge on his way of going.

Sophia Calamari and With Applause

“I met him in Florida this year, and watched him go a lot in the Greens. He seemed like a really, really sweet pony. I was attracted to his movement and the easy way he goes around, he just looks happy all the time,” Calamari commented.

Regardless of the rider, it is clear that Colby is a once-in-a-lifetime pony, and his owner does not take that for granted.

Spade said, “He is such a good pony, and if you ever get the chance to own him, keep him for as long as you can. I can always count on him. Even though I’m not riding, it’s great to see him win with someone else. My parents are hilarious, they fight over him all the time, saying ‘I wanted him’ and ‘No, I wanted him first.’ It’s so funny.”

As Small Green Pony Champion last year, Calamari was visibly excited to have another shot at the tricolors for the second year in a row.

“It feels amazing, and I hope we can duplicate our results again. I’m definitely feeling confident and excited, and am so glad to have the opportunity to ride this pony here – it means a lot to me,” Calamari said.

Taking the blue ribbon ahead of Calamari and With Applause in the model phase was Caroline Passarelli, of High Falls, New York, in the irons aboard Morgan Ward’s Cabana Boy. The 14-year-old Passarelli rode to a top six finish last year in the Smalls, and is hoping to improve upon her performance this year with her new mount.

Caroline Passarelli and Cabana Boy

“I’ve only ever ridden him one other time, last week at HITS Saugerties, so I’m new to him, but he is really fun and tries his hardest. He is amazing, thinks very highly of himself, and knows that when the judge comes by that he needs to stand and look pretty,” Passarelli said of the pony.

Passarelli was asked just a few short weeks ago by the Ward family, who had a winner of their own earlier in the day, to ride the pony, and she eagerly said yes. Only 5 years old, the small pony certainly acts his age outside the ring, according to Passarelli, but turns on his game once inside the ring.

“It is like playing with a little kid – he licks your face, he bites the reins, bites me, in a playful way! He is so fun and has a huge personality,” the young champion noted, “but once we are in the ring he is very excited and brave, especially for just turning 5.”

Currently sitting in first and fifth overall, respectively, Calamari and Passarelli will ride their ponies against more than 40 other competitors in the over fences section of the Small Green Pony division Wednesday to try and claim the top honor. Libbie Gordon and Glenhaven Astoria, owned by Parker Peacock of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, currently sit in second place, followed by Augusta Iwasaki and Calabasas, owned by California-based Iwasaki & Reilly’s Small Addition, in third position. Maddie Stiles and her own Royal Moment earned enough points to put them in fourth ahead of Passarelli, with Devin Seek aboard Woodlands Polar Bear, owned by Bibby Hill of Reddick, Florida, finishing in the top six. The class is scheduled to take place at approximately 4:45 in the afternoon, following the conclusion of the Large Regular Pony division.

The Small Pony Hunters kick off tomorrow, with the Small Pony Model beginning at 7 a.m., followed by the under saddle portion around 8 a.m.

Offspring of Harmony’s Rousseau Continue Tradition of Success

05th Aug 2015

The recently retired KWPN stallion Harmony’s Rousseau has built a legacy of exceptional quality and top-class performance. His sons and daughters are carrying on this tradition with their remarkable achievements in breeding and sport. On both sides of the Atlantic, Rousseau’s offspring continue to make their mark on the sport of dressage.

Recently making headlines were Rousseau’s son Zilverstar and rider Chris von Martels, who won individual bronze and helped lead the Canadian team to silver at the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games. The pair scored personal bests on all three days of competition, earning 75.026 percent for the Prix St. Georges, 76.210 percent for the Intermediaire I and 79.500 percent for the Intermediaire I Freestyle. Zilverstar was bred in the Netherlands by E. ‘t Hooft and is owned by the rider and Lisa von Martels.

Rousseau, a 17-year-old KWPN stallion (Ferro-Zsuzsa, Roemer) owned by Harmony Sporthorses, resides at Riveredge in Chesapeake City, Maryland, under the continued care of Hassler Dressage. Rousseau is no longer actively breeding, and a very limited amount of frozen semen remains.

A New Standard

The American-owned stallion began his career in Europe, standing in the Netherlands and Germany before coming to the U.S. in 2006. He set a new standard by becoming the first sire of two consecutive Champions of the KWPN Stallion Licensing and then raised the bar again by siring a third consecutive Licensing Champion.

Wamberto, the first of these three remarkable sons, was named Licensing Champion in 2006 and went on to dominate his 100-day stallion performance test at Paxton Farm in Ohio in 2007, earning outstanding scores. Athletic, versatile and trainable, Wamberto’s offspring demonstrate his same tractable character and athleticism and show a great deal of performance potential for both dressage and eventing.

Wamberto has competed through Prix St. Georges and is currently showing in the FEI Young Rider division. Bred in the Netherlands by Jelke & Linda Heida, Wamberto is owned by Harmony Sporthorses and resides at Riveredge alongside his sire.

Following Wamberto in achieving Licensing Champion honors was Zagreb, in 2007. Bred by Trudy and Bas Wilschut and purchased at the licensing by the highly regarded Blue Hors Stud in Denmark, the stallion, now named Blue Hors Zack, has been on the rise in recent years. In 2014, Zack’s son Sezuan won the 5-year-old title at the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden, Germany, and his daughter, Lillevangs Pari-Diva, was named Danish Warmblood Dressage Mare of the Year.

After being named Danish Stallion of the Year in 2014, Zack has started 2015 off on a high note with success in European CDIs, earning first place finishes and scores in the 72-74 percent range at Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I.

Ampère completed the hat trick for Rousseau when he was named Licensing Champion in 2008. He then won his performance testing in Ermelo convincingly, earning the highest scores given out to that date and finishing well ahead of his peers.

Bred by A. T. Rensen and owned by Fritz and Claudine Kundrun, Ampère is in training under Sweden’s Jan Brink where he also stands at stud. In 2014, Ampère finished third in the USEF Dressage Breeding Sire Rankings.

In the Spotlight

Several of Rousseau’s offspring, like Zilverstar, are in the spotlight at international dressage competitions in North America and Europe. Zippo, bred in the Netherlands by W. van Rooy and owned by Trainingsstal De Hoeve, has built a successful international Grand Prix career with rider Patrick van der Meer. His record includes victories at the Mechelen CDI5* and Roosendaal CDI3* and numerous top five finishes at competitions around Europe. Zippo’s talent, quality and trainability are evidenced by his consistent scores in the high 60s and 70s.

Harmony’s Fiorano is off to a strong start in his international Grand Prix career, competing under the British flag with rider Susan Pape. Highlights to date include a fourth place finish in the Grand Prix at the Addington CDI3*, and the goal is to keep developing him with an eye toward competing on the British team. Bred in Germany by Anke von Riegen and based in Germany at Hengststation Pape, Fiorano is owned by the rider and Harmony Sporthorses. His first U.S. foal crop arrived in 2014.

Fürst Rousseau, bred in Germany by Reinhold Haferland and owned by Marianne Kugler, finished third at his 70-day stallion performance test at Adelheisdorf with scores of 9.0 for rideability and 8.0 or higher for temperament, trot and canter. He stood at Landgestüt Celle, the Hanoverian State Stud. Now gelded and focusing on a performance career, he has been earning impressive scores in the FEI Juniors, most recently competing at the FEI European Championships for Juniors with scores in the 70s.

Rousseau’s daughters, like his sons, have proven their quality in breeding and performance. One U.S.-bred daughter, Allure S, showed promise early on by qualifying for the 2011 Markel/USEF FEI Young Horse Championships, where she placed eighth. She has matured into a top competitor, winning the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I championships at the 2014 US Dressage Finals. Bred by Sonnenberg Farm LLC and owned by Kerrin Courtney Dunn, Allure S recently qualified for the Markel/USEF Developing Horse Grand Prix National Championship with rider Angela Jackson.

Limited opportunities remain to breed to Rousseau. Please direct inquiries to Susanne Hassler at (410) 885-3824 or susanne@hasslerdressage.com. Rousseau is also managed by the following:
