The Colorado Horse Park

Parker, CO – June 29, 2016 – Rising to the occasion in the largest class of the week at Summer In The Rockies (SIR) III, a well-deserved blue ribbon was awarded to Will Simpson of Westlake Village, CA, and his mount The Dude, for their dominating performance in the $50,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix at The Colorado Horse Park (CHP). The speedy pair conquered a tough track, crossing through the timers with a jump-off time of 38.919 seconds to secure the win.

Claiming the second place position with a time of 41.161 seconds was S&L Zeppelin, piloted by Armando Hassey of Parker, CO, while Karen Cudmore of Omaha, NE, and Ceonto produced a time of 41.246 seconds to earn third place.

Simpson and The Dude are no strangers to the winner’s circle at CHP, recently claiming victory in the $20,000 Open Welcome Stake with a jump-off time of 37.335 seconds. Simpson and The Dude have a storied history together, collecting numerous grand prix victories along the West Coast.

The Dude, with Simpson guiding from the irons, has made the pair a strong combination, as they have the ability to win nearly anywhere. Simpson has established a strong partnership with the gelding and was expecting a good round in on Saturday, after The Dude started out the week a bit energetic.

“The Dude was on today. He was a little fresh on Thursday for the Welcome Stake, but he still jumped very well, however he was really on his game today,” commented Simpson.

Simpson professed his appreciation for The Dude’s performance and fight throughout track in their first Saturday night appearance at CHP this season. He noted, “I’m thrilled that there was no bucking in the victory gallop! I thought I was going to have a rodeo horse today, but he was very well behaved and handled the track pretty easily.”

The jump-off allowed for tight turns, impressive rollbacks, and long areas of gallop track, which helped Simpson make up time on the clock and the duo did just that.

“It was a really fun jump-off. There was one gnarly inside turn, but it ended up slower than going around,” explained Simpson. “We took the outside track, which still placed us before the second jump very quickly.”

“Galloping down to the skinny I felt like I had to be careful. A few jumps later in the jump-off we had to make a tight turn over the fence to be tidy,” he continued. “We came in on the right-hand side of the jump, so I had to land on the far side the fence, which was pretty difficult. He handled it beautifully though and he’s really in top form.”

Karen Cudmore of Omaha, NE, earned the Equiline Leading Lady Award for her combined performances in the two major classes during the week at SIR III, including consecutive third place finishes aboard Ceonto in the $20,000 Open Welcome Stake and the $50,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix.

Simpson and The Dude Dominate $20,000 Open Welcome Stake at The Colorado Horse Park

Simpson dominated the $20,000 Open Welcome Stake at The Colorado Horse Park on Thursday, June 23, collecting a first and third place finish in the class. Simpson piloted his longtime mount, The Dude, who will continue to compete throughout the summer, to a smooth double clear effort, finishing the jump-off in a time of 37.33 seconds to capture the win.

Bjorn Ikast of Parker, CO, and Candy Man, owned by BBB Show Jumpers LLC, earned second place in the class after securing a double clear effort and riding to a time of 37.73 seconds in the jump-off round, for a close finish behind Simpson. E-Unanime De La Haie took a third place finish in the class, as Simpson guided from the irons and helped the pair dash through the timers in 37.733 seconds.

Eager to get back in the arena this week after having taken some time off competing with his main string of horses, Simpson discussed his excitement with the result of both his horses. He explained, “I didn’t get to ride last week, so I was just dying to get into the ring. We had a really good competition almost three weeks ago and I was looking forward to getting back in the ring with these horses, as they’re really firing on all cylinders. It felt really good.”

Simpson praised The Dude for his efforts during the class, noting that the talented gelding is feeling better than ever, which will make for an exciting summer season looking forward. The pair, who has taken the West Coast circuit by storm over the past few years, will contest their final season together, as owner Nicole Walker will take over the ride in the fall.

“I think he’s learning the game. He knows that you’re supposed to go clear, fast, and not knock the jumps down,” he said. “He’s an amazing horse and he’s got a great future ahead of him. He’s a real competitor. He has always loved to go fast and jump high.”

Simpson will stay at CHP to finish out the rest of the SIR series and will look to amass more top results with a number of horses he has brought to the venue. His sights are set on the larger classes to come in the remaining weeks of competition.

“We’re here for the duration of the series. We went with the slogan of ‘Summer in the Rockies’ and we’ll be staying here for the entire circuit,” Simpson said cheerfully. “It’s going to be a fun couple of weeks here for us and we’re already having a great time out here.”

One of Great Britain’s most consistent paur, Hello Sanctos and Scott Brash will miss out the Olympic Games in Rio this summer due to a minor injury that hasn’t allowed the 14 years old gelding to be fit on time for such an event. Scott Brash and Hello Sanctos entered history earlier this year when being the first pair ever to take the Grand Slam win and his owners Lord and Lady Kirckham and Lord and Lady Harris have expressed their disappointment to not help team Great Britain winning a new gold medal. Rio 2016 was to be Hello Sanctos last championships.

Sharn Wordley and Famoso D Ive Z Take Home Top Honors in $35,000 1.45m Horseware Ireland Opener CSI 3* On First Day of Tryon Summer I

Mill Spring, NC – June 29, 2016 – Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Famoso D Ive Z owned by the Sky Group & Sharn Wordley, kicked off the first day of competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) ringing in the start of the 2016 Tryon Summer Series with an impressive win in today’s $35,000 1.45m Horseware Ireland Opener CSI 3*. The pair clinched the win with a hasty time of 69.14 seconds, besting a talented field of 33 competitors. Competition at TIEC continues tomorrow with the $35,000 1.50m Suncast® Welcome CSI 3* before welcoming the $130,000 Adequan® Grand Prix
CSI 3* on Saturday, July 2.

Finishing in a close second place position was David O’Brien (IRL) aboard his mount O’Splendido with a time of 71.40 seconds, while Cantara 59, piloted by Sarah Segal (USA), produced another fast time clear round, crossing the timers in 71.05 seconds for third place.

Sharn Wordley and Famoso D Ive Z

Sharn Wordley and Famoso D Ive Z

Wordley and Famoso D Ive Z, a 2007 Belgian Warmblood gelding (For Pleasure x Chin Chin), have been partners for little over a year now, and have exhibited their talents in multiple FEI classes so far this season across the United States, as well as at TIEC. Wordley mentioned that Famoso D Ive Z is a spooky horse, yet he continues to deliver winning rounds and improve his technique.

“Famoso D Ive Z has won several opening classes, which is a little humorous because he is such a spooky horse. You would think he would get better as the week continues on, but he seems to be superior on the first day,” said Wordley.

He went on to speak of the challenging speed track set by Oscar Soberon (MEX), saying, “In the beginning of the course, it suited me to go quite fast. In the later part though, I had to go slower than some of the other competitors, but he jumped fantastic.”

David O'Brien and O'Splendido

David O’Brien and O’Splendido

Famoso D Ive Z excels in any type of class, which Wordley elaborated is a major component of his versatility and athleticism. The duo had amassed a string of consistent performances throughout the spring circuit and Wordley has fine-tuned what makes the gelding truly competitive in the ring.

“He has a massive stride and you can go really fast into big jumps and combinations,” he detailed. “I made up a lot of time between fences two and three because I could keep galloping down the long approach to the combination.”

Sarah Segal and Cantara 59

Sarah Segal and Cantara 59

“He is just an extremely fast horse. When he is clean, he is hard to beat. He is great to have on my team,” he elaborated. “Looking forward for the rest of the week, Famoso D Ive Z will compete in tomorrow’s FEI ranking class, and then my main mount, Casper, will also contest the ranking class tomorrow and the Grand Prix on Saturday night.”

Wordley is no stranger to TIEC, having solidified an impressive record at the facility throughout the spring season. Wordley and his team will remain in Mill Spring, NC, for all four weeks of the summer series, as well as for the full duration of the 2016 Tryon Fall Series beginning in September. Wordley noted that he’s eager to stay at venue, especially after the quality finishes his string has produced in the major classes hosted so far this year.

Spruce Meadows ‘Pan American’ Tournament, Presented by Rolex, Opens with Prix des Nations Competition

Calgary, AB, Canada –The 2016 Spruce Meadows Summer Series continues this week with the ‘Pan American’ Tournament CSI 5*, presented by Rolex, featuring world-class show jumping through Sunday, July 3. Opening competitions on Wednesday featured junior and amateur riders in Prix des Nations events, which offered exciting team experience for many developing riders. The highlight competition of the week is Saturday’s $375,000 Pan American Cup, presented by Rolex.

Wednesday’s Paramount Resources Prix des Nations 1.40m and 1.30m competitions were each held in the beautiful Meadows on the Green arena and featured courses designed by Ireland’s Alan Wade.

The Paramount Resources Prix des Nations 1.40m was held first in the afternoon, with three teams competing, and a win for Mexico’s team “Chilangos” led by Chef d’Equipe Nikolaj Hein Ruus. Mauricio Huesca and Fair Force II Berkenbroek led the team off, with one time fault in round one, and a clear trip in round two. Gerardo Pasquel and Big Red jumped double clear to help their team take the victory. Sofia Larrea and Remmits Delphi carried scores of four and eight in their respective rounds. As the anchor rider, Francisco Pasquel jumped clear in round one with Heart Winner V Gurbrue Ch, and did not need to return for round two after his team had the win secured.

Team “Super Mario’s” Alexandra Crown and Emperio vant Roosakker, Lucy Deslauriers and Hamlet, Jennifer Gates and Lord Levisto, and Hilary McNerney aboard Vitesse finished second led by Chef d’Equipe Mario Deslauriers.

Following a great day with two clear rounds for his team, Gerardo Pasquel spoke of the victory, as well as his mount Big Red. The 11-year-old Warmblood gelding (Ludwig von Bayern x Lamoureux I) had a successful year competing with Nikola Hein Ruus, and then USA’s Richard Spooner, before Pasquel took back the reins recently.

“We have had him for almost three years,” Pasquel detailed. “I stopped riding him for one year because Nikola showed him. He went for the $1 million dollar competition in Saugerties, NY, and placed second. After that we made a plan with Richard Spooner to try to make the U.S. team for the Olympics, so he rode the horse for the first half of the year. He did super through the winter in Wellington, FL, and then he jumped on the U.S. Nations’ Cup team in Mexico where they were second. After the process was finished, we always talked about me riding the horse again, and I just started riding him again two weeks ago.”

Pasquel is competing for the first time at Spruce Meadows this summer and Wednesday was also his first time competing in a team event.

“I quit riding for 16 years, and I just started riding again four years ago,” he explained. “This is my first time at Spruce Meadows and I think it is the best place I have ever seen for horses.

“The people at Spruce Meadows make it feel so important for the riders,” Pasquel continued. “It is the best feeling in the world. They make it special at every single level. You can start riding from 1.10m and it is the only place in the world where they treat you like a champion in any competition. I think that is very important for the sport. In other places, it is only about the professionals and the top riders. Here, they treat everyone like the best.”

The Paramount Resources Prix des Nations 1.30m was the final competition of the day in the Meadows on the Green. Nine teams started in the first round, with the top four continuing on to round two, and a win for USA’s “Ritter’s Rascals” led by Chef d’Equipe Nikko Ritter. Claire Schreder and Quality II led the team off, with a clear in round one, and just one time fault in round two. Sydney Hutchins and Chantal scored nine and four in their respective rounds. Kelsey Maloney and La Coco jumped clear in round one and dropped one unlucky rail in round two. As the anchor rider, Coco Fath rode Catachi to one time fault in round one, and then secured her team’s victory with the final clear round of the night.

The “Jumping Jac’s” finished second led by Chef d’Equipe Jaclyn Duff. Their team was made up of Julia Madigan (CAN) riding Vintovara, Elena Fernandez (PAN) aboard Balou, Gabriella Mizrachi (PAN) with Game Boy, and Ali Ramsay (CAN) on Disarrono.

Fifteen-year-old Coco Fath did not let the pressure of going last keep her from putting in a clutch performance to help her team to the win. Fath was riding the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Catachi (by Caretino) that she has jumped at the 1.30m-level for the past year.

This was Fath’s second time competing in a team event, but a big deal for her first year jumping at Spruce Meadows.

Commenting on the competition, Fath stated, “After the first round I realized I was too slow, which was disappointing, but it made me want to do better in the second round. I went in there and I wanted to win. The pressure did not really affect me. I just wanted to go in there and give a good, clean round.

“It felt really good doing it for the team,” Fath added. “I feel like I accomplished something, not just for me, but for three other people too. I think it was a better experience winning as a team and I think it will help me later as I go on to other things.”

Speaking of Catachi, Fath smiled, “He has been great. He has a little trouble in the schooling area, but he is always perfect in the ring. You can always count on him.”

Wednesday’s Prix des Nations competition also featured three other events for competitors at many levels. The Paramount Resources Prix des Nations Junior/Amateur 1.20m riders jumped in the Chinook Ring with a win for Mexico’s team “Mayas” and Chef d’Equipe Israel Medina. Luis Alejandro Plascencia and Chapileto, Jeronimo Larrea Burillo aboard Emporio B, Francisco Mendoza riding Chacaba, and Luciana Roberta Gonzalez with Zidane secured the win.

The Paramount Resources Prix des Nations Junior/Amateur 1.10m competition saw a win for the Canadian team “Alberta Select” led by Chef d’Equipe Lisa Carlsen. Magic Man and Cassie Gorsline, Millennium Z and Anya Bereznicki, Tacata de Bedon and Oona Palmer, and Pepito des Baumes and Jenna Lee Gottschlich made up the winning team.

The Friends of the Meadows Prix des Nations Junior/Amateur 1.00m was held in the All Alberta Ring with a win for team “Jump Alberta First Choice” led by Chef d’Equipe Alex McBride. The winning team consisted of Wendy Dixon and Dollar Girl, Victoria Johnstone and Cassius, Kiera Allen riding Valkyrie, and Alexa Dever aboard Hazaro van de Rispen.

The Spruce Meadows ‘Pan American’ Tournament CSI 5*, presented by Rolex, continues on Thursday featuring the Friends of the Meadows U25 Cup, followed by the Cargill Cup 1.55m, and the Mercer Cup 1.45m to conclude the day’s competition.

CSI 5* Knokke (BEL): NICOLA PHILLIPPAERTS TAKES A WELL-DESERVED VICTORY !

1 Jul  2016!

The Thursday evening class of Knokke Hippique was used by some of world’s best riders as a final preparation for Sunday’s Rolex Grand Prix presented by Porsche. Nicola Philippaerts and H&M Quenzo de la Roque turned out to be the best pair against clock over the five-star 1.50m course. Even better than Jérôme Guery and his potential Olympic mount Papillon Z. Last year’s winners did some serious training for Sunday’s jump-off, but finished two seconds to slow to better Nicola Philippaerts’ time. Reigning Olympic champion Steve Guerdat and Albfuehren’s Happines finished third, followed by Niels Bruynseels and Gancia de Muze – last week’s winners of the Grand Prix in Bonheiden. Only Gregory Wathelet and Oh d’Eole managed to be faster then Nicola Philippaerts, but unfortunately they knocked down the last vertical.
