Call Me Hannes and David Beisel Say Call Us Winners in the $50,000 Great Lakes Grand Prix

27th July 2015

The four-week Great Lakes Equestrian Festival came to a close on a high note with the $50,000 Great Lakes Grand Prix, presented by The Peninsula Group at Morgan Stanley. Enthusiasts, friends, owners and community members gathered to watch the great sport of show jumping at Flintfields Horse Park. David Beisel, from Goshen, Ohio and Call Me Hannes, a huge gray Holsteiner gelding, owned by Harlow Investments, LLC of Mason, Ohio, walked away with the top prize and celebrated by leading the victory gallop. Beisel had a winning circuit with previous firsts in last week’s Welcome Stake Grand Prix aboard Ammeretto, a feisty Dutch Warmblood stallion, owned by Equine Holdings, LLC of Traverse City.

Portuguese course designer Bernardo C. Cabral built a twisty and windy course that produced six clears in the first round with no stand-out trouble spots on the course and downed rails distributed evenly around the course. For each of the six clean rounds, the announcer sounded the boat horn and the audience enthusiastically cheered the accomplishment of each successful horse and rider pair.

Wilhelm Genn and Bugatti

Lisa Goldman, from Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, was the first to return and attempt Cabral’s short track aboard her own Rocs to Riches, an 8-year-old, chestnut Oldenburg mare. The boat horn sounded as the pair accomplished the clear round and set the standard and the time to beat at 39.681 seconds.

“My goal with the mare was just to go double clean,” said Goldman. “She was a little tired and this was a big track for her, so double clean but a little slower was good.”

Next on course for the jump-off, Beisel and Call Me Hannes stepped on the gas and outran Goldman’s time significantly, breaking the beam at 36.238 seconds. For such a large horse, Call Me Hannes has a huge stride and is surprisingly handy and fast in the turns. The duo moved to the top of the leaderboard.

“I thought while walking the course that the jump-off probably suited Call Me Hannes a little better, versus Friday’s class,” said Beisel. “Friday’s class had a little bit more tricky stuff, and this was a little more galloping. Hannes has a bigger stride in the open field, so I let him rip.”

Lisa Goldman and Rocs to Riches

A renowned horseman with over 100 grand prix wins under his belt, Wilhelm Genn was next on course with the Eduardo Leon’s formidable Bugatti, the winner of the Week II $50,000 Grand Prix of Michigan. This pair also left all the rails in place and finished with a time of 37.328 seconds, putting them in second place.

Goldman returned for her second trip on Mary Goldman’s Centurion B, winner of the Week III Welcome Stake, and it appeared as if they may surpass Beisel and Call Me Hannes with their speedy execution of the course, but the pair knocked a rail of the final fence. Though they had the faster time of 35.178 seconds, they incurred four faults, putting them in fourth.

Beisel followed with Ammeretto, and the pair had two rails and stopped the clock at 36.607 seconds, eventually taking sixth place. Last to go was Javier Berganza Anderhub, from Lexington, Kentucky, and Armani 224, owned by Keystone, LLC. Berganza Anderhub piloted the elegant bay Oldenberg gelding around the short track and had a single rail finishing in a time of 38.763 seconds to land him in fifth place.

Beisel and Call Me Hannes maintained their lead to win the feature event of Week IV and close out the four-week circuit with another blue ribbon to add to their considerable collection. Owner Phyllis Harlow was thrilled with her horse’s achievement.

“We bought him in December of 2013, she said. “He’s always been with David. He did his first Grand Prix a year ago today.”

Next on Beisel’s schedule is Kentucky and he has made plans for the American Gold Cup in September, another event produced by Stadium Jumping, the management of the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival.

“I’ve loved this horse show, said Goldman. “The new management has been great this year, and they really figured out the footing. It’s been better this year than the past 10 years I’ve been here.”

The 7-Year Old Young Jumper Championship Qualifier

In Sunday morning’s Young Jumper Championship Qualifier for the 7 Year Olds, it was Beisel who brought up the rear as the last to enter the ring, and also the one who rode right up the ranks into first place aboard Equine Holdings, LLC’s Donnaludine. Beisel bested the group of four entries that proceeded to the jump-off, one of which was another entry of his own. When it came down to the wire, Beisel promptly piloted Donnaludine to a 37.294 second ride, and secured second with Patrice Schreiber’s Vigilante who cleared the jump-off in 37.890 seconds. Beisel and Donnaludine ultimately earned the championship title of the division, an exciting win for the pair who only competed in their first jumper class together this time last year at Flintfields Horse Park.

“Donnaludine did her first show as a jumper a year ago,” Beisel said. “She was doing the Baby Green Hunters before that, but she always jumped too high for the hunter judges to like her. That’s when we figured we would try her out in the jumper ring and she has come along beautifully. She won ribbons all the way from here to Florida, and everywhere in between.”

David Beisel and Vigilante

Beisel’s second place ride, Patrice Schreiber’s Vigilante, is another horse that he has only been working with for about a year. Beisel described Schreiber’s Irish Sport Horse gelding as “super careful and fast,” which was made apparent during Sunday’s rides. Beisel said that he will be aiming for the Young Jumper Finals in Kentucky for the 7-year-olds in September with both of the determined horses.

Wilhelm Genn was another competitor who navigated both courses without fault, but when the timer clocked him aboard Taylor Ried’s Deita at 38.859 seconds, they were awarded third place. Theo Genn fell 5.705 seconds behind his father’s third place ride, slipping into the fourth place position atop his father’s gelding, Van Gogh.

“It always helps to get a feel for the course,” said Wilhelm Genn. “Its like when the football players go out on the field and get a feel for it before they play. For me its the same way. When I get in the ring I like to canter around a bit and get a feel for the ring and the corners and see how the footing feels when you

turn.”

David Beisel and Donnaludine

The inaugural 2015 Great Lakes Equestrian Festival at Flintfields Horse Park came to a close today. In 2016 the event is planned for July 6-31. Three additional weeks are pending USEF approval.

Molly Sewell and EL Raymond Ride to the Win in $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at Kentucky Summer Horse Show

27th July 2015

When it comes to winning the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Molly Sewell and EL Raymond are two-for-two. The pair won the class last year at the Kentucky Horse Park, and they returned on Sunday to do it again this year.
Molly Sewell and EL Raymond

“He never lets me down. I think we’ve been in the top four of every derby that we’ve ever done – usually winning because that’s what Raymond does,” Sewell laughed following her victory.

At 17 years old, the Warmblood gelding is owned and regularly competed in the Adult Amateurs by Leslie Campbell and can still out jump and outshine horses half his age, as he did on Sunday.

Sewell and EL Raymond went early in the order over the Joseph Carnicom-designed course to earn a score of 90 plus four high option points for a 94. That score would hold up through the entire first round as the best in the class. Sitting in second going into the handy round were Emma Kurtz and VIP Z on a score of 92, while Lilly French and Candor rounded out the top three on a score of 91.

Molly Sewell and EL Raymond

As the top 12 returned for the handy round in reverse order of their standings, it was Addison Piper and Billy the Kid, owned by Cory Olson, who made the biggest jump up the ranks. The pair came in to round two in seventh place on a score of 84.5, but seamless round utilizing great handiness and all four of the high options would earn them a score 88 and shoot them to an overall total of 172.5. That total would end up being good enough to capture the third place award.

Heading into the top three contenders, French and Candor, owned by Redfield Farm, were the first to return. They gave a second solid performance, earning a score of 89 for a two round total of 180, which would put them ahead of Piper and Billy the Kid by 7.5 points.
“This is only my second hunter derby on this horse,” 15-year-old French said. “He’s only 7, and he just started doing the 3’6, so now we’re doing the 3’6 juniors. He’s the scopiest horse out there. He’s never bucked. He’s never done anything wrong, and he has the sweetest personality. You can just stand in his stall, and he’ll just play with you for forever.”

Following French’s impressive performance, it all came down to Kurtz and VIP Z and Sewell and EL Raymond. Kurtz returned next, but a disappointing refusal at the trot fence dropped them from second to 12th with an overall total score of 136.

Lilly French and Candor

Sewell and EL Raymond returned next, picked up an immediate and direct canter to the first jump and went straight to another score from the judges of 94. Together the pair’s dual scores of 94 would give them a 188 total and clinch their victory.

“He was really, really good,” Sewell said. “He was kind of dull in the schooling area so I thought ‘oh come on, Raymond. Wake up.’ I don’t know why I ever doubt that he’s going to wake up and jump flawlessly and beautifully. He was so high over everything and so smooth. He didn’t touch one jump; he was just right on it.”

EL Raymond, whose name stands for Everybody Loves Raymond, is extremely well loved in the barn and around the horse show, where Sewell says he has quite the fan club.

“He just brings us a lot of joy – the whole barn,” said owner Leslie Campbell. “He’s got a huge personality and all this talent. He’s just a treat. He’s really a gift.”

Campbell forewent showing EL Raymond in the Adult Amateurs this week in order to save the horse for the derby with Sewell, and Sewell will return to the derby ring on him again during the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show.

Riders competing in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derbies held throughout the Kentucky Horse Show series are eligible for leading rider bonuses awarded to the leading professional, junior and amateur riders and generously sponsored by Hallway Feeds.

While Sewell is not necessarily contending the bonus this year, French says she may give it a go now that she continues to do well in the derbies.

“Originally I was just trying to enjoy it, but then I came down here, and I was like, ‘oh, I actually can do well, so I’ll just keep doing it,'” French said. “Whatever happens, happens; it wasn’t like a ‘at-the-end-of-the-year-you’re-going-to-be-top-5 thing.’ That wasn’t a goal for me; the goal for the year was just to get to know him and make the best out of whatever happens. Now I’m going to keep doing the derbies as much as I can.”

While Sunday marked the conclusion of the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, hunter/jumper competition at the Kentucky Horse Park continues on Tuesday with the start of the Kentucky Summer Classic.

BALTICA EQUESTRIAN TOUR – The Extraordinary Quality, The Best People, The Greatest Feelings!

baltica summer LOGO

BALTICA EQUESTRIAN TOUR is an International Showjumping Competiton held at the Ciekocinko Stables in North Poland. The Ciekocinko Stables is an integral part of the complex Palace Ciekocinko Hotel Resort & Wellness. Both investments, the revitalization and reconstruction of the palace and the park and the establishing of the Sport Centre within Ciekocinko Stud Farm, had been carried out in parallel, so that in the end one could complement the other.

This goal has been achieved. Returning the palace to its former glory while preserving the spirit of this place where you can still hear a whisper of the history, has been offset by the tap of hooves on the pavement, the turmoil of a busy day in the stable, and last but not least, a hefty dose of pure sport emotions and adrenaline during international horse jumping shows regularly held at Ciekocinko Stables – Baltica Equestrian Tour.

The first edition of Baltica Equestrian Tour held on August 2014 was a huge success and a real celebration for all equestrian enthusiasts. The organizers believe that creating a new quality of equestrian events in Poland is going to bring finally a unique setting that this wonderful discipline deserves. As well as a lot of work and a gigantic organizational effort. They hope that by initiating changes, making efforts to promote horse riding and creating its favourable image, they will find many partners and followers since it is their biggest dream to make this sport accessible to a broader audience.

To familiarise you a little with Baltica Equestrian Tour we are going here to show you some facts&figures from the Baltica Spring Tour.

Here are our numbers during BET – SPRING EDITION:

In Ciekocinko Stables, during BALTICA EQUESTRIAN TOUR – Spring Edition, we hosted 120 riders, representing 27 countries from 5 continents, with total number of 380 horses. Those couples competed in 66 competitions, at 2 show jumping Arenas, fighting for share of the total money prize of 274 400 Euro.

But BALTICA EQUESTRIAN TOURS are primarily about people! Exceptional and great riders who occupy the highest positions in the world and European rankings, who are living very intensive sport life, while competing regularly on the world’s largest arenas. People like Cameron Hanley, or Janne Friederike Meyer, or Abdullah Al Sharbatly, or Jur Vrieling, and many others.

Riders are of course the most important actors of this great equestrian spectacle which BALTICA EQUESTRIAN TOUR surely is, but there are also people without whom this show would not be held and who are deeply involved in its success.

Since the BET Summer Edition is coming at a great speed, once again we rely on the best professionals and recognized names. Our strategy is simple: no compromise. For that reason, every single day is a time of strenuous work and huge organizational effort made to show a new quality and prevailing world trends to all horse riding lovers in Poland at one time and at one unique place – Ciekocinko Stables.

We are working only with the best Course Designers, the most experienced Judges, the world renowed announcers, Commissioners, Volunteers, Computer and Technical Support, Photographers and Cameramen.

What and when:

The upcoming Summer Edition of Baltica Equestrian Tour will be held July 28th to August 9th.  The event is scheduled in the rank of CSI3 * / CSI1 * and * CSIYH1. During the Summer Tour we’re going to have TWO qualifiers for the Olympic Games RIO 2016, within our Grand Prix, which will be held on two consecutive BET Sundays in a row – 2nd and 9th August 2015.

To get a Certificate of Capability for the Olympic Games, riders and horses must go faultlessly twice, in the first round of Grand Prix Competitions at selected CSI3* outdoor events. That means: if you ride faultlessly in our GPs then, with a bit of luck, your dreams about RIO 2016 may come true during the two-week event in Ciekocinko!

Pan-American Games 2015: Jumping gold for Canada and USA

26 Jul 2015

by Louise Parkes

In a series of competitions that could hardly have been choreographed to better effect, Canada claimed the team title while America’s McLain Ward clinched individual gold in Jumping at the Pan-American Games 2015 in Caledon Park, Toronto, Canada.

Thursday’s team tussle was an intriguing battle that proved unpredictable to the end when Argentina filled silver medal spot ahead of the USA in bronze. And it continued in the same vein today when the individual medals were decided in a two-way jump-off for gold and silver as well as a five-way race for the bronze. Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez went head-to-head with Ward, and although he had to settle for silver his result reflected the consistent theme of the week. The quality of the sport in the region has improved beyond recognition in recent years, and the normally dominant sides had to fight very hard indeed to claim their fair share of the spoils.

Olympic qualification was also hanging in the balance since the action began last Tuesday, and it is Canada and Argentina that have claimed the two team berths for Rio 2016 while two individual qualifying spots have been earned by both Colombia and Venezuela, and one each by Uruguay and Peru.

Gentle introduction

Course designer, Canada’s Michel Vaillancourt, gave them a gentle introduction on Tuesday when 30 of the 50 starters jumped clear. However it was a very different matter two days later in the team competition, when just four of the 40 team members managed to return a zero score in the first round.

A total of 10 nations – Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay, USA and Venezuela – fielded teams, and it was an unpredictable thriller to the very end.  The host country was expected to breeze into one of the Olympic qualifying spots, but at the halfway stage it was Colombia and Argentina who looked set on the road to Rio while Canada was sharing third place with Brazil, Chile lay fifth and the hotly-tipped Americans were lying sixth.

Perfect start

Clears from Daniel Bluman (Conconcreto Sancha LS) and Roberto Teran Tafur (Woklahoma) meant that the single time fault collected by Fernando Cardenas (Quincy Car) was all the Colombians had to count going into the second round. The Argentinians were next in line with two, but Canada carried six, hampered by a seven-fault discard score from Tiffany Foster who had a stop with Tripple X. This meant they had to include the single error from Eric Lamaze (Coco Bongo) and the single time faults of pathfinder Yann Candele (Showgirl) and anchorman Ian Millar (Dixson). But the Canadians and Americans both rallied brilliantly second time out, the host country adding just one more time fault to their tally while all four US riders were foot-perfect.

So when Argentina’s Ramiro Quintana (Whitney), Matias Albarracin (Cannavaro), Luis Pedro Biraben (Abunola) and Jose Larocca Jr (Cornet du Lys) added six to their scoreline, the Canadians sneaked ahead of them by a single penalty point to clinch the gold because the Colombians had disappeared from the reckoning with 14 on their score-sheet second time

out. And eight faults for Brazil allowed the USA overtake them for the bronze.

Wanted this so badly

Legendary Canadian team member, Ian Millar, said, “we wanted this so badly for our team and our country!” He acknowledged what a close finish it was, only a single time fault pinning Argentina into silver medal spot. “The last horse (from Argentina) had to have a fault of some kind….and it came down to a fraction of the second in the end”, he admitted.

They may have been nudged out of gold medal spot, but Argentina’s Ramiro Quintana praised the last-to-go run from Jose Larocca Jr – “we needed a clear round and he brought it home” he said. Larocca commented, “it’s huge for Argentina, it’s been many years since we have had a medal at a Championship like this so it’s very important, very encouraging to the young riders in our country.”

Right to the wire

Today’s individual final was another nail-biter that went right to the wire, and Larocca was one of just three, from a starting field of 35, who returned a zero score in the first round to leave him on level-pegging with America’s McLain Ward and Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez. But a mistake in the second round saw the Argentinian battle it out in the five-way jump-off for bronze that took place between all the four-fault riders before the final contest for silver and gold began.

And Larocca was pushed off the medal podium when America’s Lauren Hough added nothing to her first-round error with Ohlala to take the bronze. “I had to fight hard for it!” Hough said after producing the only clear of this jump-off. “For my horse this was her first Championships but she’s done events like Aachen and she seems to get better as the week progresses. I would say the fault I had in the first round, I was too polite at the double planks, but I had a nice position in the jump-off, the three ahead of me had rails down but the one behind was a quick horse so I took a bit of a risk” she explained.

Jump-Off for gold

Venezuela’s Rodriguez led the way in the jump-off for gold, and left the door open when racing home with Darlon van Groenhove in the fast time of 39.45 seconds, but leaving one element of the double on the floor. “I was a bit too careful at the first part and had the back part of it. I was very fast because I knew McLain was coming behind, so I risked a bit”, he explained. Ward kept a cool head to return a clear in 42.89 to take the individual title, admitting that, as so often happens, luck played a part in the end result. “My game plan was to ride the first five fences fast to try to win it two ways – if I had a fence down I would still be fast enough – and I was lucky at the last (fence), I gave that a bit of a rattle. But I’ve never won a big one without a little bit of good fortune!” said the 39-year-old three-time Olympian.

Talking about his horse, Rothchild, he pointed out, “I knew the courses would get bigger as the week went on and that would suit him, he’s a blood horse and a stamina test suits him, but today I knew I couldn’t make a mistake – it was a tough day’s work!” he said.

Result:

Teams:  GOLD - Canada 7 faults: Showgirl (Yann Candele) 1/1, Tripple X (Tiffany Foster) 7/0, Coco Bongo (Eric Lamaze) 4/0, Dixson (Ian Millar) 1/5; SILVER - Argentina 8 faults: Whitney (Ramiro Quitana) 5/0, Cannavaro 9 (Matias Albarracin) 1/6, Abunola (Luis Pedro Biraben) 0/5, Cornet du Lys (Jose Larocca) Jr 1/1; BRONZE - USA 12 faults: Rothchild (McLain Ward) 4/0, Lilli (Georgina Bloomberg) 4/0, Ohlala (Lauren Hough) 4/0, Gazelle (Kent Farrington) 5/0.

Individual: GOLD – Rothchild (McLain Ward) USA 0/0/0 42.89; SILVER - Darlon van Groenhove (Andres Rodriguez) 0/0/4 39.45; BRONZE – Ohlala (Lauren Hough) USA 4/0/0 42.15.

Facts and Figures:

A total of 10 nations lined out for the Pan-American Games 2015 team Jumping title.

Only 4 horse-and-rider combinations jumped clear in the first round of the team competition.

The time-allowed of 83 seconds proved difficult to get in the first round when 28 of the 40 starters picked up time faults.

In round two of the team competition, 24 riders collected time faults.

Course designer was Canada’s Michal Vaillancourt who was individual silver medallist at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

The top-35 according to cumulative penalties over the first and second competitions qualified for today’s individual final. Nations with four riders in the top 35 sent forward their three best-placed combinations.

America’s McLain Ward won individual gold with Rothchild. He was on the winning US team at the previous Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011 where he also finished individually fourth.

The list of teams so far qualified in Jumping for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games now includes, Brazil (automatic qualification), France, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and USA (placings at Alltech FEI World Equestiran Games™ 2014 in Normandy), Canada and Argentina (Pan-American Games 2015 in Toronto, Canada), and Qatar (best ranked team from Group F).

Countries can also qualify “composite” teams. For full details of Olympic EVENTING qualification opportunities, and list of teams, check out this link

The next major Olympic qualification opportunity is at the forthcoming FEI European Jumping Championships 2015 in Aachen, Germany, 11-23 August where three places are on offer to the best ranked teams from Groups A and/or B.

Quotes:

Individual gold medallist McLain Ward USA, talking about the standard of the sport at the 2015 Pan-American Games – “the level has gotten so much better in the Americas, you could see that in the Nations Cup. The US horses jumped very well but we had a few mistakes – a bit of four-fault-itis – it was one day, one shot, and to be honest if we were to do it again we probably wouldn’t do it any differently. I went to two Olympic Games before I did my first Pan-Ams. I went to Guadalajara (2011) and won team gold and finished individually fourth. But the specs have been raised (over the last four years) and there were quite a few top riders who compete in 5-Stars here this week.”

Individual silver medallist Andres Rodriguez VEN- ‘We all knew coming in not to expect a hard course on the first day. But the job Michel Villaincourt has done here has been amazing, the feedback he is getting from the riders is brilliant! It was an easy course on day one, but the Nations Cup was unbelievable – no double-clears, it was tough but smart. Today we knew the Championship would end with a big first round, bigger than the last Pan-Ams, and there were only two double-clears at the end”.

Individual bronze medallist Lauren Hough USA: “This is my third Pan-Ams and I am extremely proud and impressed by the level of these Championships. Today was equivalent to any Grand Prix in the world!”

UAE National Federation suspension lifted by FEI Bureau following signature of agreement

27.7.2015

27 Jul 2015

The FEI Bureau has unanimously approved the immediate reinstatement of the United Arab Emirates National Federation to full membership of the FEI following signature of a legally binding agreement between the two parties in which the Emirates Equestrian Federation (EEF) guarantees that horse welfare will be fully respected and that FEI Rules will be stringently enforced at all Endurance events, both national and international, in the country.

The agreement has been signed by FEI President Ingmar De Vos and Secretary General Sabrina Zeender, and by EEF President HE Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Secretary General Taleb Dhaher Al Mheiri, and Mohammad Al Kamali, Secretary General of the UAE National Olympic Committee.

The EEF was provisionally suspended by the FEI Bureau in mid-March following an investigation by the FEI into major horse welfare issues and non-compliance with FEI Rules and Regulations in Endurance in the UAE.

Following the suspension and at the request of the FEI Bureau, the EEF proposed an extensive list of actions it would undertake to address the issues. These were integrated into a draft agreement that the EEF sent to the FEI in early June. The FEI Bureau unanimously welcomed the proposals, but informed the EEF that more areas needed to be covered before the agreement that would allow the provisional suspension to be lifted could be signed. The two parties have spent the intervening weeks reviewing and revising the terms of the agreement.

Under the key terms of the agreement, the EEF must ensure that:

  • Protocols are put in place to avoid equine fatalities;
  • Applicable rest periods are respected;
  • Horses on rest periods are blocked from entry in national events (the FEI system already blocks entries in international events);
  • Use of prohibited fluid administration and any substances prohibited under the FEI Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMRs) in and around the Field of Play and at the Vet Gate is prevented;
  • Prohibited substitution of horses is prevented;
  • Prohibited vehicles on the Field of Play are prevented;
  • Any individual or horse suspended by the FEI is automatically blocked by the EEF IT system from competing at national events;
  • The role and authority of officials in carrying out their duties is respected at all times;
  • Training and education of Athletes, Trainers, Support Personnel, National Federation Staff Members and Stable Veterinarians is conducted prior to the start of the 2015/2016 Endurance season in October;
  • FEI rules on post mortems are adhered to and, where possible, the same procedure is applied in the event of fatalities at national competitions;
  • A national Independent Governance Advisor, approved by the FEI is appointed;
  • Conflicts of interest are avoided;
  • Distribution of prize money is in accordance with the FEI approved schedule;
  • Rules for National Endurance events in the UAE are fully compliant with the FEI Rules and Regulations.

The EEF will provide monthly written reports during the 2015/2016 season on steps taken to ensure ongoing compliance with FEI Rules and Regulations, and agrees to abide by any further recommendations put forward by the FEI. Following completion of the 2015/2016 season, the EEF will provide reports whenever requested by the FEI.

Additionally, the EEF will support a research project to evaluate the causes of injuries linked to the design of desert endurance courses. Endurance Trainers will be obliged to cooperate with this research project.

The agreement also details the new legislation that has been introduced in the UAE prohibiting the trade or use of banned substances in horse racing and equestrian sports in the country and the sanctions that will be imposed for breaches.

“We are very pleased that, after four months of very hard work, the United Arab Emirates have demonstrated with the signature of this agreement that they are fully committed to ensuring horse welfare and complying with FEI rules at both international and national level in the country”, FEI Secretary General Sabrina said. “They are absolutely committed to making this work so that they can return to playing an active and leading role in Endurance once again and, to demonstrate that commitment, they have included the UAE’s highest sporting body, the National Olympic Committee, in the agreement.”

“We are very pleased that the FEI Bureau has unanimously agreed to lift the suspension based on the considerable actions and solutions we have put in place together”, EEF Secretary General Taleb Dhaher Al Mheiri said. “We will continue to work with them to ensure all their requirements are applied in endurance racing across the UAE. As the governing body of equestrian sports in the UAE we take our responsibility seriously. It is our goal to pursue excellence while promoting the growth of the sport and safeguarding the welfare of equine and human athletes.”

Separately, the FEI had commissioned the Equestrian Community Integrity Unit (ECIU) to conduct an extensive inquiry into allegations of fake events and duplicate results in the UAE. These allegations were not taken into account when the FEI Bureau imposed the suspension, and were dealt with independently, but provisions have been included in the agreement to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The EEF cooperated fully with the inquiry and the detailed report has now been received by the FEI. The report is currently being reviewed by the FEI and a file will be submitted to the FEI Tribunal for further action. Sanctions will be taken against any FEI Officials found to be involved. In addition, the FEI will annul all duplicated results and review any connected results.

At the same time, the EEF Endurance Committee conducted its own investigation into the allegations and has authorised sanctions on any Organisers and EEF staff that are found to be involved. The EEF is currently restructuring its organisational policies to ensure that similar events cannot occur again and will put rules in place for all future FEI events under which either the National Federation or the Organising Committee must provide all equipment, including the timing system.

The EEF accepts that the FEI will be entitled to impose sanctions in case of non-compliance with all the terms of the agreement. These sanctions would include, but are not limited to, the immediate reinstatement of the suspension and withdrawal of the allocation of the 2016 FEI World Endurance Championships, which are due to be held in Dubai in mid-December next year.

The agreement will remain in effect for a three-year period. During that time, the FEI and EEF will meet at least once a year for an in-depth review, in addition to the monthly written reports required under the agreement. The FEI reserves the right to extend the term of the agreement if appropriate.

27 Jul 2015

The FEI Tribunal has lifted the provisional suspensions on Swiss Jumping riders Steve Guerdat and Alessandra Bichsel, following preliminary hearings for the two riders at the end of last week. The lifting of the provisional suspensions will come into force today, 27 July at midnight CEST (Swiss time).

The FEI Tribunal’s decision is mainly based on the scientific evidence presented by the persons responsible (the athletes) which suggests the likelihood of food contamination.

Both riders had been provisionally suspended after horses on which they were competing tested positive for prohibited substances, including banned substances.

Samples taken at the CSIO5* at La Baule (FRA) on 17 May from the horse Nino des Buissonnets (FEI ID FRA45550), ridden by Steve Guerdat, returned positive for the banned substances Codeine and Oripavine, and the controlled medication substance Morphine.

Samples taken at the CSIO5* at La Baule on 16 May from the horse Nasa (FEI ID FRA45675), ridden by Steve Guerdat, returned positive for the banned substance Codeine and the controlled medication substance Morphine. The horse’s sample also showed traces of Oripavine, but not at a sufficiently high level for the testing laboratory to declare a positive for the substance.

Samples taken at the CSIOY (Young Riders) in Deauville (FRA) on 8 May from the horse Charivari KG (FEI ID 102ZB26), ridden by Alessandra Bichsel, returned positive for the banned substances Codeine and Oripavine, and the controlled medication substance Morphine.

A preliminary hearing was held via teleconference on Thursday 23 July to hear Steve Guerdat’s request to lift the provisional suspension imposed on him and the two horses Nino des Buissonnets and Nasa.

A preliminary hearing was held via teleconference the following day, Friday 24 July to hear Alessandra Bichsel’s request to lift the provisional suspension imposed on her and the horse Charivari KG.

While the FEI Tribunal lifted the provisional suspensions on the two riders, requests for the lifting of the provisional suspension on the three horses were denied. The Tribunal found that irrespective of the source of the prohibited substances, banned substances had been found in the system of the horses and it is the FEI’s established policy to impose a provisional suspension period of two months in such cases.

Today’s decisions purely ruled on the lifting of the provisional suspensions. Decisions on the merits of the cases will be made at a later stage.

Lifting of provisional suspension of Steve Guerdat by FEI

Jul  28  2015

The FEI has informed Swiss show jumper Steve Guerdat that the provisional suspension, spoken against him by the FEI on July 20, is lifted today at midnight. This decision was made following the preliminary hearing before the FEI Tribunal on July 23, based on the scientific evidence presented which suggests food contamination as cause for the findings of the FEI investigation, which is not due to the fault of the rider, and his request for lift of the provisional suspension against him as Person responsible according FEI Rules. Steve Guerdat can thus again take part in jumping competitions and will immediately start the respective planning.

Steve Guerdat is relieved and happy about the FEI decision to lift his provisional suspension against him. At the same time, however, he regrets that due to the current FEI Rules applicable the provisional suspension against his two horses is maintained. Guerdat and his team will put every effort in the further ongoing process of the FEI investigation to provide as soon as possible the evidence for the mentioned food contamination as the cause of the positive findings, in order to suggest the lifting of the suspensions also for the horses before the FEI Tribunal.

Sydney Shulman and Venice Victorious in $50,000 Rood and Riddle Kentucky Grand Prix

28th July 2015

Saturday night at the Kentucky Horse Park ushered in hundreds of spectators for Hats Off Day and one of Sydney Shulman’s biggest career grand prix wins. The 20-year-old and her mount Venice bested a field of 36 horse-and-rider combinations to win the $50,000 Rood and Riddle Kentucky Grand Prix at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show.

“I’ve had a really good couple of weeks,” Shulman said. “I won the Ox Ridge [Hunt Club] and Fairfield [County Hunt Club] grand prix two weeks ago and the week before on two of my other horses, so it’s pretty cool to come here and do it on my favorite one!”

Sydney Shulman and Venice

From the original starting field, only three riders successfully maneuvered the first round, Alan Wade-designed course without penalty to advance to the jump-off. The others all fell victim to faults both over the fences and on the clock – including 15 combinations who finished with at least one time fault. Three riders, including Alison Robitaille, Conor O’Regan and Ansgar Holtgers, all finished clear over the fences but faced heartbreaking time faults as they tripped the timers, keeping them from the second round.

It was only Shane Sweetnam and Easy Contact Humlan, Shulman and Venice, and Sharn Wordley

Shane Sweetnam and Easy Contact Humlan

and Corino who would successfully advance to the jump-off and vie for the lion shares of the prize money in front of the packed stands in Rolex Stadium.

As the early pathfinders, Sweetnam and Easy Contact Humlan, owned by Sweet Oak Farm, were the first to contest the short course, and they turned in an impressive double clear effort to finish on a time of 47.238 seconds.

“I knew he has a big stride, but he’s not the quickest horse; he spends a lot of time in the air,” Sweetnam said in regard to Easy Contact Humlan’s jump-off round. “He’s going to jump big tracks; he’s a great horse. I knew that I had to try to be quick, but I knew if they executed their plan, they would be faster, so I think I definitely did a lot less strides than Syd did everywhere; my horse just is a slower horse.”

Shulman and Venice, owned by Jill Shulman, returned next, and from halfway through the course it was apparent that they were gunning for it. As they crossed the finish, their time flashed 44.823 seconds, nearly three full seconds ahead of Sweetnam’s time to move them into the lead.

“I didn’t have a very good jump-off in the welcome class on [Venice], so I was a little skeptical going back in today,” Shulman said. “She’s super quick across the ground; she doesn’t spend much time in the air. Her strides not big so I know I can make up time in the turns because she’s careful.

“I said to everyone before I went in, ‘I’m going to play it safe to the double,’ because that’s where I messed up on Thursday, but then I saw it. She felt really good, and I think I made it up there and at the liverpool. Then I took a shot to the last,” Shulman said.

>From there it all came down to Wordley and his own Corino. But as a rail fell out of the cups, Wordley elected to retire, knowing that he would still finish in third, and the victory was Shulman’s.

“Venice is just the best. She’s so quick off the ground. She’s so careful,” Shulman said. “We try to do the opposite of any other horse. We jump really small in the schooling ring. We jump small classes to gear her up for a big one. She knows her job.”

Shulman continued, “She jumped the $100,000 at Old Salem unbelievably. That was kind of the telling point that she can be my top horse. We just really get along well ever since the day I first got on her. She just tries so hard every single time.”

Sydney Shulman and Venice

Shulman looks forward to coming to the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows every year, and she and Venice will return to competition next week during the Kentucky Summer Classic.

“It’s my favorite horse show. It’s my 12th year coming here every year for three or four weeks,” Shulman said. “The facility is unbelievable. The show is run so well. You have permanent stabling which is nice. You have more than six rings to ride in everyday with great footing, and I think all of my horses jump great here. I love it. There’s always atmosphere.”

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show concludes on Sunday with jumper competition resuming at 8 a.m. in the Rolex Stadium.

Jennifer Alfano Wins $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Candid at Week 1 of the 2015 Equifest Horse Show

28th July 2015

SBS Farms continued to shine in the hunter rings this past week at the Equifest I Horse Show held at Lamplight Equestrian Center. Jennifer Alfano put in impressive trips on several horses to earn top ribbons in numerous divisions, yet it was Candid who stole the limelight in Chicago.

Alfano captured the Second Year Green Working Hunter Championship with Candid after placing first in the handy, as well as first in two of the over fences classes. After concluding the professional divisions on Thursday, it was time to prepare for the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. It came as no surprise that the brown gelding caught everyone’s eyes, especially with the stars that were delicately shaved on his hindquarters.

Dean Battaglia designed the derby track, utilizing bending lines, long approach single jumps and offering four opportunities to earn high option points. Alfano and the affectionately known “Sheldon” put in a smooth round with a forward hand gallop to the final obstacle, giving them the advantage they needed to earn a 97 for the high score of 192 points and the top prize.

The success continued for Alfano when she captured the High Performance Working Hunter Championship with Jersey Boy after winning three blues; one in the handy and two in the over fences classes. Jersey Boy has always put his best hoof forward in Chicago, even clinching the USHJA International Hunter Derby victory last year, as well as the win in the Chicago Hunter Derby in the fall. Billie Steffee’s Maggie May also impressed during the High Performance Working Hunters, winning the reserve championship in the division, also with Alfano in the irons.

A newer mount for Alfano, The Exchange, has continued to impress the team at SBS Farms, as well as Alfano. With tight competition, The Exchange stepped up to win the $1,000 USHJA Pre-Green Hunter Incentive Stake, showcasing his skills before the Finals in two weeks. He also clinched the championship title in the Pre-Green 3′ Hunters. Sharon O’Neill’s Castle won an over fences and under saddle class in the Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunter division to round out the professional divisions.

Alex Trolli was the Junior 3’3″ Hunter Champion with Del Piero, and won the $1,000 USEF Junior Hunter Classic on Hey Sailor, owned by Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center. The young talent has continued to shine in the Junior divisions, a move from the Children’s Hunters that she made not too long ago.

Paige Kouimanis and Sweet Oak Farm’s Lexus were fantastic in the Low Children’s 1.0m jumpers, proving that they are a team that is a match with many more blues in their future.

Based out of Buffalo, NY, SBS Farms’ Susie Schoellkopf and Jennifer Alfano run one of the foremost show hunter training operations in the country, and travel nationwide to compete in the nation’s most prestigious horse shows.

SBS Farms, Inc. continues the proud tradition of the Saddle and Bridle Club as one of the top show stables in the northeast. Schoellkopf is also the Executive Director of the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, which houses both The Buffalo Equestrian Center as well as SBS Farms. Built in 1922, the 160-stall facility is a historical landmark, with its unique English Tudor and Gothic-style architecture.

Great Lakes Equestrian Festival Week IV Wrap-Up July 22-26

28th July 2015

Beisel and Call Me Hannes maintained their lead to win the feature event of Week IV and close out the four-week circuit with another blue ribbon to add to their considerable collection. Owner Phyllis Harlow was thrilled with her horse’s achievement.

Kelley Farmer and Mindful

$25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by the Gochman Family

Talent was in no short supply Saturday at Great Lakes Equestrian Festival IV as riders from all corners of the country vied for the top spot and the major claim of the $25,000 pot in the USHJA International Hunter Derby, generously sponsored by the Gochman Family. The premier hunter event of the four-week series brought 23 entrants to the Grand Prix Ring after a quick transition from the morning’s brightly-colored jumper obstacles to the lofty natural fences created for course designer Thomas C. Hern, Jr.’s derby tracks.

In the hunt for the second consecutive year, was defending champions Kelley Farmer, of

Keswick, Virginia, with the ride aboard her ever-faithful Mindful, as well as last year’s reserve rider Peter Pletcher, of Magnolia, Texas, but this time with a new mount.

Riding in reverse order of the standings, 12 duos came back with a vengeance to improve upon their initial score and climb the ladder to a higher final finish and greater paycheck with impressive rides in the slightly condensed handy round. Beisel and Eos M moved up a spot, while Farmer and Point Being managed to capitalize upon their second chance with a score of 189 that hoisted them into the lead with only three pairs left to ride. With the score to beat at 348, Derbyshire and Romance proved why they belonged at the top of the pack with a second score of 188 and cumulative marks of 362 to best Farmer by 14 points overall.

Down to the wire, Pletcher and Luxe entered the ring as the second-to-last hopefuls. The Texan continued his three-week streak of top-scoring rides with notable marks of 195 for his stylish handy performance. After Farmer and Mindful took their final trip, the boat-whistle blew over the loud speakers to signify another score of 90 or higher, earning them the top prize.

Once again, Pletcher navigated to the second spot of the competitive class with Luxe, owned by one of his students and a vital part of Pletcher’s PJP Farm for the past seven years.

Derbyshire and Romance maintained their third position to clinch the final podium spot. It was fitting that the pair earned a top finish as the Gochman Family, owners of Romance and gracious sponsors of the event, watched from the ringside tent.

Farmer and Point Being claimed the fourth position, with Beisel, Friday’s Grand Prix winner, and Eos M just a few points behind in the fifth spot. Rasmussen and Quite Chocolate rounded out the top half of the second-round returners in sixth position.

Wednesday Jumper Highlights

Lisa Goldman stole the show in the Grand Prix Arena, riding away with wins in both the 1.40m and 1.35m classes. Her ride in the 1.40m atop her new horse of only three weeks, Sovereign, was especially exciting as it was one of the largest tracks she has ever jumped the stallion. Goldman and Sovereign won last week’s first 1.35m class, so Goldman decided they were ready to turn it up a notch.

Although the pair was riding to new heights in the 1.40m, they made it look like second nature, going double clear over Bernardo Cabral’s tight course and putting in a swift jump-off time of 34.811 seconds.

Just behind Goldman was another double clear round put in by Nick Novak aboard his gelding, Cico, but their jump-off time of 37.69 seconds wasn’t quite quick enough to catch Goldman’s new stallion. The pair would have to settle for second position.

Before the 1.40m class, Goldman proved that she was no stranger to success at the 1.35m height, mimicking her top standing on the leaderboard from last week. While it was Goldman and Sovereign who rode to first place last week, Wednesday it was Memphis Belle’s turn to have her moment in the spotlight. The winning mare, owned by Goldman’s client Louisa Brackett, also moved up a division this week, and it proved to be an easy task.

Goldman and Memphis Belle were one of four horse-and-rider combinations to go double clear out of a field of 12 total pairs. Theo Genn and Eduardo Leone’s Asirea Fortuna tagged closely behind Goldman with a jump-off round of 35.268 seconds, just 1.445 seconds away from the winning round to earn them second place.

In the 1.30m this morning, it was two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Lisa Jacquin who came out on top aboard Rolls, owned by Doublethink LLC. As the only pair to go double clear, they made Cabral’s complicated course look easy, seamlessly riding through the various combinations and in-and-outs without brushing a rail. David Beisel’s jump-off time of 35.862 seconds atop Harlow Investment Enterprises, LLC’s Rumorosa was a whole 6.71 seconds quicker than Jacquin’s winning ride, but unfortunately a knocked rail cost him the top spot.
