Opening Ceremony of the FEI European Championships Aachen 2015: Hans Günter Winkler back in his “equestrian living room”

28.7.2015

Hans Günter Winkler stands shoulder to shoulder with Max Schmeling and Fritz Walter. He is a legend of the German sport and this actually has a lot to do with Aachen and the World Championship title he won 60 years ago. At the Opening Ceremony of the FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 on August 11th, he will be returning to the big stadium. The organisers don’t want to disclose the details of his appearance yet, but instead the 89-year-old “HGW” revealed what Aachen means to him.

Question: On August 11th, you will be part of the Opening Ceremony of the FEI European Championships Aachen 2015. What was it like riding into this arena, what did it feel like?

Hans Günter Winkler: “The size of the arena and the exceptional atmosphere due to the fantastic crowd are what turn Aachen into a unique experience every year. For me, as well as for all of the equestrian athletes from all nations, riding into this stadium was and still is both impressive and challenging.”

Question: You claimed the World Championship title in Aachen 60 years ago. Is that your strongest memory of Aachen?

Winkler: “Of course, successfully defending my title as world champion is very memorable. But, above all, I will never forget the special atmosphere of fair sportsmanship between myself and my good friend, Raimondo d‘Inzeo, when I won the world championship title as the last rider in the jump-off and my defeated friend rushed over to congratulate me in a wonderful sign of sporting fairness and recognition.”

Question: What does Aachen mean for you?

Winkler: “Aachen is unique in every respect. For us riders just as much as for all of the officials and the terrific crowd.”

Question: Why do you think you are so incredibly popular with the crowd in Aachen?

After all, lots of other rider were successful here…

Winkler: “In the 37 years between 1949 and 1986, a family-like relationship developed between the crowd in Aachen and myself, which turned the Soers into my equestrian living room. You’d have to ask the people from Aachen themselves why they are so fond of me, instead of me.”

Question: What do you think makes Aachen so fascinating?

Winkler: “It is probably due to the fact that the ALRV keeps a vigilant eye on the development of the modern top sport paired with their awareness for upholding the traditions and constant consideration of the needs of the horses.”

Question: Turning to the European Championships 2015: Who do you think are the favourites?

Winkler: “There are indeed many favourites. The current world ranking list shows a clear picture of the high quality of the European riders and horses. 7 Europeans are under the top 10 in the rankings – and 17 under the top 20! The form on the day and that famous bit of luck will ultimately decide who wins.”

Question: You actively promote aspiring young riders. What tips do you have for young talents?

Winkler: “That always depends very much on the personality of the young people. But, in general, terms such as motivation, diligence, ambition and courage play a decisive role.”

Question: When you cast a backward glance – what have been the most important changes in the field of equestrian sport over the past decades?

Winkler: “In fact, I don’t actually believe in changes, but rather in further development. The incredible further development in the breeding sector and the fact that the needs of the horses have been increasingly taken more into consideration over the decades have led to dramatic further developments in the sport.”

Question: You have never missed a CHIO in Aachen – what is your nicest memory purely from a spectator’s rather than a competitor’s point of view?

Winkler: “In spite of my old age, I have a pupil competing this year, namely Andreas Ostholt in the eventing. So, I still can’t really answer that question purely from the point of view of a spectator.”

Question: Can you remember your first show in Aachen?

Winkler: “Of course, I can remember my first show in Aachen – I competed here in 1949. The impressions I gained at the time most certainly contributed towards my special motivation and ambition to achieve major riding victories for Germany.”

GLOBAL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CONFIRMED FOR 2016 LAUNCH AFTER BELGIAN COMPETITION AUTHORITY SUSPENDS FEI EXCLUSIVITY CLAUSE

Jul  29   2015

BRUSSELS, July 29, 2015

Global Champions League (GCL), the new show jumping league and team competition developed by the owners of Global Champions Tour (GCT), welcomes the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA)’s decision to suspend the so-called “exclusivity clause” imposed by Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), the equestrian sport’s governing body.

In June, the GCL had filed a complaint and a request for interim measures with the BCA in Brussels alleging the breach by the FEI of European Union competition law by using its rules to prevent riders from competing in events not approved by the FEI.  In its interim measures ruling, the BCA ordered the FEI to suspend its exclusivity clause with regard to the Global Champions League pending the investigation into the GCL’s complaint.

The ruling by the BCA means that the Global Champions League will now launch in 2016.  No participating rider will be penalised by the FEI for taking part in the Global Champions League and the BCA has ordered the FEI to inform the national federations, riders, officials, and organisers of such in writing by 31st August.

The FEI exclusivity clause had until this point prohibited riders from taking part in any non-FEI approved event for a period of six months prior to their participation in an FEI-approved event. Given the year-round nature of world class competitive show jumping, the exclusivity clause effectively prevented riders from taking part in non-FEI events and had impeded the launch of Global Champions League.

In 2016, the new Global Champions League will see team owners recruit star riders, selecting two riders from a squad of four to compete in each event, creating an exciting new competition alongside the already hugely successful Global Champions Tour for individual riders.

GCT President Jan Tops said: “We welcome this important decision by the Belgian Competition Authority, which now gives us a clear path to launch the Global Champions League in 2016.

“It is important to note that the decision of the BCA is in clear recognition that without the suspension of the exclusivity clause it would have been impossible to go ahead. I am happy that there is now clarity for all the riders and our stakeholders and we look forward to delivering fantastic competition for the enjoyment of everyone.

“We look forward to continuing to transform the sport we love to ensure a bright and healthy future for everyone involved in show jumping around the world.”

Frank H. McCourt, Jr., co-owner of GCT said: “This decision by the Belgian Competition Authority represents an historic and transformative moment in the sport of show jumping.  It sends a strong and decisive message that fair play and open competition matter as much in show jumping as they do in football, cricket, basketball, and every other global sport.

“Until now, the FEI’s exclusivity clause had put a strangle hold on the global development and growth of show jumping.  This decision opens the door to innovation in the sport and will ultimately benefit the entire show jumping community, from the riders, fans, and horse owners, to the support teams, the media, and sponsors.  In the years to come, there will be whole new audiences for the sport around the world and we are pleased that we can now get this incredibly exciting process underway.

“We thank the BCA for recognizing the validity of our case and for ordering the removal of the restrictions placed by the FEI upon the riders wanting to participate in the Global Champions League.”

Attorneys Filip Tuytschaever and Jean Louis-Dupont commented: “Justice has been served by the BCA’s exemplary interim measures decision. The decision, adopted less than two months after the introduction of the request for interim measures, is a first important step to establish the illegality of the FEI exclusivity clause. By means of its decision, the BCA has shown its ability to intervene quickly and efficiently to safeguard competition in the market.”

The BCA’s interim measures ruling states that the exclusivity clause is suspended, in as much as it applies to riders participating in the Global Champions League, until after the clause’s legality has been examined by the Belgian Competition Authority. During the investigation of the complaint introduced by the GCL, the FEI is prohibited from suspending or sanctioning, directly or indirectly (via the national federations), in any way whatsoever, athletes because of their participation in an event organised in the framework of the Global Champions League.

The decision by the Belgian Competition Authority is binding across the sport due to the international nature of show jumping, in the same way as soccer’s Bosman ruling in a Belgian court impacted on players’ contract-related freedom across the game.

Adam Prudent and Madeleine Stover Capture Kentucky Summer Classic Opening Day Wins

$

29th July 2015

If their performances on Tuesday are any indication, Adam
Prudent and the team at Plain Bay Sales are in for a great week at the Kentucky Summer Classic. The show got underway on Tuesday morning at the Kentucky Horse Park, and Prudent and student Madeleine Stover kicked things off by earning back-to-back victories in the largest jumper classes of the day.
Adam Prudent and Joy Ride

Prudent’s win of the day came in the $5,000 1.40m Open Jumpers aboard IAG Syndicate LLC’s Joy Ride. Prudent and Joy Ride were one of six to go clear over the Florencio Hernandez designed course, but their time of 69.567 seconds is what would clinch them the victory in the Table II, Sec. 1 speed class.

While no one else was able to break below the 70-second mark, Denise Wilson came the closest. She finished in both second and third, taking second on Nimbus, who finished clear in a time of 70.550 seconds, and third on Catuso, who finished clear in a time of 74.857 seconds.

“This is a great win today for her. I’m very happy,” Prudent said of Joy Ride, a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Dorothy Cox’s IAG Syndicate LLC. “Dot has owned her for the past six years I believe, and I started riding her last year.”

Prudent continued, “She’s a very hot horse, so no leg whatsoever. You just have to place her to the distance using your eye from far back. She’s a very fun ride and a very fast horse. She has a huge stride, is very, very fast and turns well, so she’s always a good one to have in a speed class.”

Joy Ride has recently been competing to much success in the 1.30m to 1.35m divisions, but the mare made the move up seamlessly to the 1.40m today.

Also making a move up the heights this week were Madeleine Stover and Royal Des Etisse. Stover. Stover has been a student of the Prudents for approximately 10 months, and has been seeing great success aboard Royal Des Etisses, a 10-year-old Sell Francais gelding, owned by Chester Ridge LLC. Tuesday was no exception, as the pair produced a double clear effort to win the day’s 1.35m Open Jumpers in a jump-off time of 48.336 seconds.

Madeleine Stover and Royal Des Etisse

“[Royal] was doing the 1.30m over in Europe, and Adam [Prudent] found him,” Stover explained. “I got the ride on him all through Florida; we did the medium amateur-owner jumpers, and we did a couple of 1.40m classes. We went up to Spruce Meadows for six weeks, and he was amazing up there. He was super on the field. He just really grew up up there with me, and we got some good ribbons in the 1.30m.”

Stover continued, “Last week here we just did the medium amateur-owners to get back in the swing of things. Then we decided to try to move up this week. We started in the 1.35m today, and he was amazing. It was the perfect way to start. We’re really starting to put it together. It’s just been really fun to go for it now in the jump-offs. Usually I go really slowly, so today I really tried to gallop around. He just stayed right with me. He was super.”

Stover was one of four riders to complete the first round without fault and one of only two to produce a double clear effort. The second double clear and the second place ribbon went Callie Schott and Lori Custer’s Paratrooper, who finished on a jump-off time of 52.277 seconds. Rounding out the top three were Sharn Wordley and Gran Canyon, owned by Ashland Stables.
Jumper competition continues on Wednesday in the Rolex Stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park beginning at 8 a.m. with $5,000 1.40m Open Jumpers. Jumper highlights during the Kentucky Summer Classic include the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic at 7 p.m. on Thursday and the $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix sponsored by GGT Footing on Saturday night.

Tim Goguen Tops Professional Hunter Divisions at Kentucky Summer Classic
During last week’s Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Tim Goguen consistently conquered the top spots in the professional hunter divisions with his trio of dark bay geldings: Rookie, Capella and Ransom. The proven combinations returned this week, duplicating their winning ways at the Kentucky Summer Classic.
In the First Year Green Hunters, Goguen piloted last week’s reserve champion, Garland Alban’s Capella, to blue ribbons in both over-fences classes, coming in second to Belhaven Stables LLC’s Rookie in the under saddle. In addition to winning the hack, last week’s champion, Rookie, picked up two second-place ribbons over fences.
“They went awesome,” Goguen said. “Capella went really well today. I thought Rookie went better last week, but he was good.”
Tim Goguen and Rookie
As the day continued with the Conformation Hunters, it was Robert Crandall and Casallo who swept the field, claiming all three of the division’s blue ribbons. Last week’s champions, Winn Alden and Covert, followed closely behind and placed second to Crandall in both over-fences classes.
Crandall and Casallo are old friends whose relationship dates back to Crandall importing the now-11-year-old Casallo as a 3-year-old stallion from Europe. The pair was recently reunited after Casallo’s current owner, Erin McGuire, put the gelding up for sale as she heads to college. Crandall jumped at the opportunity to lease the gelding for the year: an arrangement both parties are thrilled with.
“It’s just been great having him back,” Crandall said. “He was very good; he’s a joy to ride, really. He’s a big-strided, scopey horse, and if you have him prepared, he’ll canter down to anything. It’s easy for him. He’s always been successful at everything he’s done. Today was hard because I sat last week at Blowing Rock judging, so I feel like I can’t breathe; he had to do a lot of the work today.”
Bob Crandall and Casallo
The Second Year Green Hunters were the next to show, with last week’s reserve champions, Goguen and Ransom, coming back to earn the top spot in all three classes.
“Ransom went well,” Goguen said. “He’s a good horse. It was nice to just have those three to go today; I’m very happy with them, very pleased.”
The division’s reserve championship is in question, however, as second place went to a different horse-and-rider combination in each class: once to Just D’o, once to Covert and once to Fusagers Carma.
The professional hunters conclude on Wednesday with the awarding of the division champions and the week’s overall grand hunter championship, sponsored by Visse Wedell at Douglas Elliman.

From Canada to Sweden to New York, Deeridge Farms Succeeds Around the World

31st July 2015

This summer, Deeridge Farms has made its mark at the top horse shows, not just across the country, but also around the world. The Jacobs Family has scored top ribbons at Spruce Meadows in Canada, Lake Placid in New York, and Falsterbo in Sweden, showcasing their winning ways throughout the summer.

At the Lake Placid Horse Shows in upstate New York, the team saw success in the hunters and jumpers and for every member of the family.

Katie Jacobs Robinson dominated in the Amateur-Owner Hunters, riding Amarillo to the Amateur-Owner 36 & Over Hunter Championship during week one and week two, and then picking up the Amateur-Owner Grand Championship in the second week of action. All in all, Robinson and Amarillo won six of the 10 classes offered during the two weeks, scoring two wins and a second during week one and winning four of five classes during week two. Adding to her basketful of awards, she gathered in the Reserve Championship on week one with Tradewind, winning the Amateur Owner Under Saddle class.

“It was great,” Robinson smiled. “It was our first show after a great Devon, and you never know how they will come out. I was really happy that Amarillo came out of his stall and got right in the groove. It was great that he stayed focused and didn’t get sour or mad during the second week. He just stayed the same, so that was terrific. I am always happy when Tradewind goes well. I am still getting to know him, but it’s getting a bit more consistent.”

Robinson was happy to have the family along to take advantage of the great outdoors and to get daughter Maggie additional showing experience. “I can remember going there as a kids, so it’s really fun for me to have my kids there, and I love it because I don’t feel like I am being selfish and making them sit around,” she explained. “They are busy doing stuff like going on the boat, or ice skating, or hanging out with their cousins.”

Robinson’s daughter Maggie, meanwhile, scored a win and a third place finish in Lake Placid. Riding Secret Life, she earned a victory in the Modified Children’s Hunters during the second week after placing third during the first week of action.

I was really proud of her,” smiled Katie. “She doesn’t show too frequently, but I think she enjoys doing it when she gets the opportunity.”

Over the past month or so, Charlie Jacobs has been making stops around the world with a trip to Canada for Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta, then back to Lake Placid, New York, and then a trip to Falsterbo, Sweden.

Spruce Meadows was the first stop for Jacobs and son Charlie Jr., who gained invaluable experience at the prestigious venue. “We went to Spruce Meadows for two weeks before we came to Lake Placid, and I really think that helped him get used to jumping on grass and going a little bit more forward down the lines,” Jacobs Sr. explained. “It was a real eye-opener for him, and I think that set him up nicely for Lake Placid, to have a successful show jumping in the 1.30m. He has two new horses, and Alhaurin De La Nancy has been a great addition to his string. We got her at the end of WEF, and to go and jump in those big classes at Spruce Meadows and Lake Placid is a big change. Charlie consistently got better and better as it went on because he became more comfortable with her.”

Following a second place finish in the $1,000 1.10m Junior/Amateur Welcome Stake at Spruce Meadows, Charlie Jr. rode Under the Radar to success in the Low Junior Jumpers at Lake Placid and was also double clear in the Junior Jumper Classic on Alhaurin De La Nancy.

“As a father it is great to see Charlie’s success in the sport,” said Jacobs. “A year ago we had a long discussion about whether he was going to ride, period. He was on the fence, as is often the case with most young teenage boys, and he thought he might be the next Supercross star. We asked him if he would give us the summer and just do the jumpers, and by the end of it he was hooked.”

Meanwhile, daughter Katie Jacobs piloted Campesino IV to two third place finishes in the Low Children Jumpers during week three. In the hunters, she scored a win in the Junior 3’3″ Hunter Handy on Chamiro after moving up from the Children’s Hunters during the first two weeks.

“Katie had a really good successful step up into a new division,” noted Jacobs. “We’ve had Chamiro for three years now, and he’s been a consistently good horse for her. They have a very good rapport, and I am really happy to see her move up.”

During the third week of the Lake Placid Horse Shows, Jacobs had the opportunity to represent the United States of America in Sweden. Jacobs and Flaming Star were sensational, putting in the only double clear round of the day despite a very tight travel schedule.

“Trapper was wonderful,” he said. “I went to work on Monday in Boston, then flew Monday night and got in Tuesday with the jog on Wednesday. In the Nations Cup, he was tremendous. He was all heart and gave two great, clear rounds for our team.”

Now, the horses are taking a well-deserved break and enjoying some time in their paddocks. To close out the summer, the Jacobs Family and Deeridge Farms will be making stops at the Bromont International Horse Show in Quebec, Canada, the Silver Oak Jumper Tournament, the Fieldstone Horse Shows in Massachusetts, and the Hampton Classic Horse Show in New York.

Mike Suchanek Notches Wins at Lamplight With Leatherdale Farms’ Young Horses

31st July 2015

The summer is getting hotter, and the scores are getting higher for Mike Suchanek and Leatherdale Farms’ young horses. They continued their winning streak as they made the trip to Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois, July 18-19 for July Dressage at Lamplight I and II. Suchanek had a perfect show, winning every class and only coming in second to himself.

Suchanek is bringing along several of the horses with the aim of returning to Lamplight Aug. 19-23 for the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships. With the qualification period complete, Fleur de Lis L, a Hanoverian mare (First Dance-EM De La Rosa, De Niro), and Fighting Chance L, a Hanoverian gelding (First Dance-EM Helia, Hohenstein), are ranked third and fourth respectively on the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Ranking List for 6-year-olds. Dublin L, a Hanoverian gelding (Damsey-EM Wibranda, Wolkenstein II), is ranked third among 4-year-olds.

All three performed well during July Dressage at Lamplight. Fighting Chance L posted a score of 82.200 percent in the Young Horse Final for 6-year-olds, and Fleur de Lis L had a great go at Third Level, scoring 71.410 percent for Test 3. Dublin L scored 75.588 percent for First Level Test 3, and Hannigan, another 4-year-old, also impressed with a score of 77.206 percent for First Level Test 3.

“I’m very proud of Dublin L and Hannigan for putting up great scores in their respective classes, showing off their talent and rideability,” Suchanek said.

Another goal for the Leatherdale Farms horses this season is the US Dressage Finals in November, and several horses competing at Lamplight earned qualifying scores for the Regional Championships. Hero L competed at Training Level and First Level during the 2014 US Dressage Finals and has advanced quickly since then. The 8-year-old Hanoverian gelding (His Highness-Waterlily L, Wolkenstein II) made his Fourth Level debut with Suchanek at Lamplight. Clearly the step up was no problem for him: he scored 72.973 percent for Fourth Level Test 1.

“Hero has been such a quick learner,” Suchanek said. “It has been a pleasure training him and bringing him up the levels. Being such a big horse, his body is catching up with his inner talent. I’m very proud to have had the chance to start him under saddle and bring him up the levels of dressage.”

Suchanek also performed his first Fourth Level Test 3 in competition with Corenzo, scoring an impressive 73.333 percent.

“I’m so honored to work for such generous and wonderful owners as Doug and Louise Leatherdale,” Suchanek said. “They have been supportive and excited to see their horses go out and show off their talent. I’m very thankful to have them encouraging us to take their horses into the dressage ring.”

He added, “I want to thank Alison Sader-Larson for keeping me on track and helping me advance in my knowledge of dressage. I also want to thank Jessi Lash, our performance horse manager at Leatherdale Farms in Minnesota, and our team for all the hard work they do behind the scenes.”

Teenage rider wins coveted Winter Grades B & C Finals

31st July 2015

An 18-year-old rider from Lincolnshire saw off her older rivals to be crowned the Winter Grades B & C champion today at Hickstead (29th July).

There were 24 starters in the class, which forms the conclusion of the prestigious national series. Months of qualifying competitions are held throughout the winter and the series often shines a spotlight on the sport’s upcoming equine talents. Today it was young talent Chelsea Skelton who shone brightest, producing an exemplary double clear with the eight-year-old Caramba.

Chelsea has ridden the gelding since he was five, and describes the horse as a reformed character. “He was really naughty – he used to go up on his back legs and leave the arena. Sometimes I still have to ride him for two hours first to stop him running off with me,” she says.

“We couldn’t afford to buy a really good horse, so we had to go for something that was a bit quirky. I saw him advertised and begged my mum to go and see him, and we bought him with the money she had saved up to buy a new kitchen!”

It was the first time that Chelsea had competed in Hickstead’s famous International Arena, having last ridden here during the Hurstpierpoint College National Schools and Pony Club Championships a few years ago.

“It was a bit nerve wracking, but after the first jump I just thought it’s okay, I know what I’m doing – and he does like a big arena,” adds Chelsea, who has just finished her A Levels.

“Me and mum have come down for the whole week, it’s quite a long way from Lincolnshire and the shopping here is amazing so we’re using it like a mini holiday,” she says.

Earlier today, Adrian Whiteway won the 1.25m SEIB Winter Novice Championship on his own eight-year-old gelding, Cojack. They were the fastest of five combinations to jump double clear.

The morning’s pony showjumping action got underway with the Oakley Coachbuilders Winter Grade JC Championship, which was headed by Fife-based Fraser Reed on Bay Friend. They were the fastest of only two combinations who jumped double clear.

The Winter 128cms Championship was won by Hannah Barker and My Little Sweetheart, while the 138cms division went to Shaunie Greig and Drumaclan Flight.

In the showing, Billy Ward claimed the Open Hackney Championship with Westbourne Hi-Tech, while the Leeman Family Supreme Hunter Pony Championship went to Thistledown Las Vegas and Reise Shakespeare.

The international action gets underway tomorrow, with the Bunn Leisure Vase, the Bunn Leisure Trophy and the new format Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought at the gate or by visiting www.hickstead.co.uk.

Triple Victories for Abigail McArdle at Kentucky Summer Classic

31th July 2015

Adam Prudent and Madeleine Stover earned victories for Plain Bay Sales at the Kentucky Summer Classic on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, it was Abigail McArdle’s turn.

McArdle claimed three back-to-back wins in the $5,000 1.40m Open Jumpers, the 1.35m Open Jumpers and the 1.30m Open Jumpers, giving the Plain Bay Sales team a clean sweep of all of the 1.35m and 1.40m Open Jumper classes held so far this week at the Kentucky Horse Park.In the $5,000 1.40m Open Jumpers, McArdle piloted Plain Bay Sale’s Harriri to the victory, finishing double clear with a jump-off time of 39.050 seconds.
Abigail McArdle and Harriri

From a starting field of 34 entries, 20 completed the first round Florencio Hernandez designed course without fault, turning the jump-off portion into a close foot race – all mostly in hot pursuit of McArdle and Harriri’s time.

The pair had gone only second in the order and returned immediately to set the jump-off time that would hold up for the entire remainder of the class. While none could beat McArdle’s time, all of the top five would come within just two seconds of it. Amanda Derbyshire and Lady Maria BH, owned by David Gochman, came the closest, finishing in second on time of 39.301 seconds. Rounding out the top three and finishing in a time of 40.276 seconds was McArdle’s fellow Plain Bay Sales rider, Madeleine Stover, on Chester Ridge LLC’s Camillo.

At only 8 years old, Harriri, is a relatively new mount for McArdle, having been purchased by Plain Bay Sales and started during the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival with the intention of turning the mare into a competitive children’s horse for the 1.30m.

“I was just going to get on and do a couple classes,” McArdle said. “Then we realized, ‘hey, this horse has got some scope.’ So then we did a couple of 1.35m, 1.40m and 1.45m classes. We realized that this horse is special. She’s only 8 so we’re taking it a little bit slowly, but you’re definitely going to see her in the grand prix within the next couple of years.”

McArdle continued, “We always say she’s going to be super special and as big a winner as Cosma [20], and so far that’s been very true to form.”

Abigail McArdle and Cosma 20

Cosma 20, owned by David McArdle, has continuously been a top mount for McArdle, racking up top finishes internationally and in Kentucky, and on Wednesday it was again Cosma 20 who found her way to the top of the leaderboard. The 12-year-old Hanoverian mare took the top call in the 1.35m Open Jumper speed classs where she finished fast and faultless in a time of 56.682 seconds.

From the field of 35 entries, none would come even within eight seconds of McArdle and Cosma 20’s time. The second best time of 64.807 seconds went to Martin Mallo and Michelle Navarro Grau Dyer’s Sato Yama, and third went to Conor O’Regan and Salamander Farm’s Salome De Mars on a time of 64.863 seconds.

“We’ve been trying to jump in a lot of the FEI classes, and I’ve been keeping her as my speed horse,” McArdle said of Cosma 20. “But here in Kentucky it’s a great opportunity for me to jump the smaller grand prix. She’s funny to prepare, because her best preparation is going in a smaller speed class and really boosting her confidence up. This is really preparing me for tomorrow.”

Abigail McArdle and Cosma 20

McArdle and Cosma 20 will return on Thursday night for $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, but first McArdle added yet another win to her Wednesday streak. She claimed the victory in the 1.30m Open Jumpers aboard David McArdle’s Tina, while second went to Plain Bay Sale’s Adam Prudent on Pensilvania, owned by Dorothy Cox.

Jumper competition at the Kentucky Summer Classic continues through Sunday with headline events including Thursday night’s class and Saturday night’s $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix sponsored by GGT Footing.

Manuel Torres and Anabella Top $10,000 Welcome in Vermont

31st July 2015

Manuel Torres of Leesburg, VA, and Anabella had the speed to win the $10,000 NYDJ Welcome Stake, presented by Manchester Designer Outlets, on Thursday, July 30, at the Vermont Summer Festival in East Dorset, VT. The Vermont Summer Festival runs for six consecutive weeks at Harold Beebe Farm from June 30 through August 9.
Thursday’s immediate jump-off class welcomed 25 entries over tracks built by Gerry Briggs (USA). The fifth week of competition in Vermont offered solid competition with nine double-clear performances.

From the first position in the order, Julie Welles of Wellington, FL, set an early pace of 38.24 seconds in the jump-off with Twan, owned by Missy Clark and Stephex Stables. She and Twan – one of four entries for Welles – sat in the lead for eleven rounds. Ian Silitch of Ocala, FL, and Cordovo, owned by Gaston Family Investments, LLC, were hoping for two Welcome Stake wins in a row when they entered the ring on Thursday. Well on their way, they crossed the timers clear in 38.08 seconds to steal the lead.
With only four horses remaining in the class, including a final ride for Welles, Torres and Anabella, owned by Santa Catalina Farm, took a chance on the win.
You never know if you’ve done enough with riders like Julie coming behind you because they are very fast,” said Torres. “I took a shot between the first and second jump and left a stride out. I thought that was the only thing I could do to beat Ian at that point.”
The absence of a single stride was enough to give Torres the edge and post a time of 37.49 seconds for the top spot.
One of the final three competitors, Alexa Lowe-Wiseman of Wellington, FL, and Gringo, owned by Windsor Farm Sales, were the closest challengers. Their 37.85-second time landed them second-place honors, while Silitch and Cordovo settled for third. Welles was fourth aboard Virginia W Z for North Run and Yves Houtackers, in 38.20 seconds and rounded out the top five with Twan.

Anabella, a 12-year-old Swedish-bred mare, is affectionately called Bella around Santa Catalina Farm and is the ride of Torres after advancing from the Amateur ranks.
We imported her two years ago and my daughter rode her in Amateur classes last year, but we wanted to move her up and I didn’t have an Open Jumper horse, so I took over the ride,” said Torres. “This is her third win after only moving up to the grand prix level this year – she’s a fantastic horse.”
Torres is at the Vermont Summer Festival for the remaining two weeks of the circuit and will pilot Anabella in Saturday’s $30,000 Manchester & the Mountains Grand Prix before hopefully setting their sights on the $50,000 finale on August 8.
She’s a very uncomplicated ride,” added Torres. “You don’t feel huge scope, but she always tries to leave the jumps up and that is what’s important.”
In addition to their share of the prize money, the top two finishers were presented with awards from Manchester Designer Outlets in Manchester, VT. Torres claimed a $1,000 gift card from NYDJ, while Lowe-Wiseman was awarded $100 to Polo Ralph Lauren for second-place honors.
Competition at the 2015 Vermont Summer Festival runs weekly from Wednesday through Sunday, beginning each day at 8 a.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children from Wednesday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, admission is $9 for adults, $5 for children. 100% of the gate proceeds benefit the Manchester Community Library and Dorset Equine Rescue.
The Vermont Summer Festival is New England’s largest hunter/jumper competition, and the richest sporting event based on purse in the state of Vermont. It is a proud member event of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, the Marshall & Sterling League, and the North American League (NAL). For over 20 years, the event has attracted exhibitors and their families to the Manchester region in southern Vermont for great competition in an ideal summer setting.
Please e-mail or visit the website for more information about the Vermont Summer Festival.
