LGCT CSI 5* Antwerpen: World No1 Simon Delestre takes world class win in split second thriller

23 April 2016

Simon Delestre grabbed the 5* spotlight this evening as the top three riders came within two hundredths of a second of each other in an extraordinary demonstration of high calibre sport at the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Antwerp.

It was a battle of nanoseconds as the World No1 and former LGCT Antwerp Grand Prix winner took the honours in the 1.50 / 1.55m CSI5* BMW-sponsored class. The pace and performance was sensational, with many of the world’s top horses and riders in action under floodlights on the River Scheldt in Europe’s ‘Diamond City’.

With spectators holding their breath, Bertram Allen (IRL) on the experienced Romanov and Penelope Leprevost (FRA) with Vagabond de la Pomme, were joint second, crossing the line at the exact same time in 38.39s – something highly unusual in the sport. It was seen only once before last year in Paris, when Ben Maher and Karim El Zoghby took a joint win in the final class of the day.

The first round course featured light poles and cups, with delicacy the word of the day. Three skinny poles played their part with many caught out in the intimate floodlit arena.

Ten riders went through to the jump-off, with some of the world’s top horse and rider combinations in the mix for this electric round of competition. Penelope Leprevost and Vagabond de la Pomme were the first to jump clear in a strong 38.39s. Despite Vagabond de la Pomme not being a classic speed horse, Penelope rode a smooth round, shaving all corners possible and covering the ground with a good galloping stride.

Home rider Niels Bruynseels (BEL) and his fiery hose Gancia de Muze set off at a phenomenal pace, however were unable to catch the leading French rider, much to the groan of the local watching crowd. Compatriot Pieter Devos (BEL) and Espoir were faster in time, but with one fence down were unable to claim a medal in the tight speed class.

World number 1 Simon Delestre and his Grand Prix winning horse Qlassic Bois Margot were next to go, steaming ahead and crossing the line just two tenths faster than his fellow French rider, in an impressive 38.37s.

Jessica Mendoza (GBR) and yesterday’s speed class winner Eric Lamaze (CAN) both caught an unlucky pole as they pushed for the fastest time. Janika Sprunger (SUI) and Uptown Boy caught a time fault with their jump-off round, and John Whitaker (GBR) with the stunning grey Echo of Light joined those on four faults launching a little too early into the combination. Patrice Delaveau (FRA) was the final rider and despite putting in a valiant effort also came away with four faults, leaving his compatriot Simon with the win.

Earlier in the day Egypt’s Abdel Saïd won the opening two phase Artisan Frams 1.45m CSI5* class with the fiery 9 year old bay gelding Luron S Z, stopping the clock at an impressive 21.52s. Many of the world’s top horses were on show ahead of the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Antwerp, with famous faces including Casall ASK, Codex One, Chiara, Cornet d’Amour and Flora de Mariposa.

The flowing two phase course was a great starting point for many of the world’s top combinations, with the high calibre athletes exploring the arena for the first time. A total of 19 went into the second round, to race against the clock, and it an opportunity to witness global combinations in one place for the first time in Europe this season.

Pius Schwizer and his bay mare 11 year Ailina came a close second in 22.05s – John Whitaker and his upcoming mare Ornellaia took a strong third place, just three tenths of a second off P2 and crossing the line in 22.39s. Ireland’s Denis Lynch put in an impressive early performance with Camilla, holding the lead for the majority of the class, however had to settle for 5th position overall. Other notable names on form were Sergio Alvarez Moya (ESP), Jos Verlooy (BEL), Schuyler Riley (USA), Gregory Wathelet (BEL) and Laura Kraut (USA).

Tomorrow’s Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Antwerp will kick off at 18:45. For the full event information, please click here.

23.4.2016

The FEI has decided that no further action will be taken towards Pénélope Leprevost. She got a lot of critique on the way she reacted in the warm-up area during Longines FEI World Cup Finals in March. The incident caused a storm in equestrian media outlets and even more so in social media.

The FEI stated then: “The FEI is looking into the full circumstances of the incident in which the French horse Vagabond de la Pomme stumbled very badly prior to the first round of Monday’s competition and the rider, Penelope Leprevost, reacted very roughly”.

Leprevost later apologized , saying that she was deeply sad that she over-reacted.

The FEI investigated the incident and today they announced their conclusion:

Horses & Dreams meets Denmark: Bröring-Sprehe with personal best

(Hagen a.T.W.) World number 1 Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and her Desperados were of course the favourites in the first Grand Prix at Horses & Dreams meets Denmark, presented by WIK Elektro-Hausgeräte Vertriebs GmbH & Co. Prod. KG.

National Coach Monica Theodorescu summoned the whole A-team to travel to Hagen to check fitness and physical appearance. Hagen is the first outdoor tournament in the Olympic year and is considered as first, allthough unofficial, sighting for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. And of course all came, only dressage queen Isabell Werth had to cancel due to illness. The presentations of the possible members of the team were expected with anticipation, and one thing became immediately clear: Germany hasn’t had such a high performance density, so many potential championship duos at such a high level for a very long time, and Theodorescu will have the “luxury problem”, the agony of choices. Place one to four went to German duos plus the sixth place for Anabel Balkenhol and Dablino.

Kristina Bröring-Sprehe dominated the competition with a personal best – 82.8 percent – a true benchmark! She even did not really realize her own record, but was only happy about the good feeling she had with her smart and shiny black stallion. The second Olympic Games after the fantastic performances in London in 2012 are not far away any more: “I actually only pray every day that Desperados stays healthy and fit. That’s the most important thing!”

Second place went to a particularly young duo. Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo, however, are used to winning in Hagen. They won the Young Nations Cup “Future Champions” in Hagen in 2014; this competition is celebrated at the Hof Kasselmann every year. Both won the qualifier for the Louisdor-Prize in Hagen in 2015, and now they are about to win a ticket for the Olympics in Rio.

Third place went to an experienced rider. Riding instructor Hubertus Schmidt rode his Imperio. Fourth finished Jessica Bredow-Werndl, followed by Anna Kasprzak who represented this year’s host country with Donnperignon.

Coolio towards victory

The show jumping tournament’s Big Tour at the four-star level in Hagen at the Teutoburg Forest featured an international two-phase jumper class today. Guido Klatte jr. and Coolio presented the best performances in this test, presented by A. Rawie GmbH & Co. KG.

“Coolio has a high basic speed, but he is at the same time very sensitive and gets easily distracted. But if he approaches the first jump, then he knows that we are ready for take-off,” and that’s how the duo outpaced their competitors. The 20-year-old rider from Lastrup had a goose bump-feeling today: „To ride in front of a home audience – at one of the most gorgeous tournament venues in Europe, that’s simply fantastic.“

The runner-up, Philipp Weishaupt who competed with Chico, confirmed that Klatte had accomplished an exceptional round. “I thought that I was already very fast,” Weishaupt joked. He was feeling like in his own living room at Horses & Dreams. “I have been competing here in Hagen since the first tournament was held, I no longer think about it – Hagen is always part of my tournament schedule.”

Holger Wulschner who rode BSC Cavity, completed the top three, and it is his aim to compete in the Grand Prix of Deutsche Kreditbank AG on Sunday with the Caretino-offspring. He already thanked Ulli Kasselmann for this absolutely amazing tournament in the morning: “With the new indoor arena, priority and reputation were once again upgraded. I know from the organizer’s point of view (Redefin) how much work such an event requires. This engagement simply deserves greatest respect.

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black Win First Ever FEI Grand Prix CDI 3* at Tryon International Equestrian Center

Mill Spring, NC – April 22, 2016 – Ashley Holzer (CAN) and Dressed In Black took home a historic win in the first ever FEI Grand Prix CDI 3* presented by Adequan® at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Holzer and Dressed In Black earned a 70.320% for the win, while Chris Von Martels (CAN) and Divertimento received a 69.880% for second place. Megan Lane (CAN) and Caravella rounded out the top three with a 68.580% to complete a Canadian sweep. Competition at TIEC continues tomorrow featuring the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan® beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan® starting at 6:30 p.m.

Holzer and Dressed In Black, a 2005 Westphalian stallion (Dresemann x Sweetheart) owned by Holzer along with Dr. Diane Fellows, made a strong return to FEI CDI competition. The pair only contested a few national shows at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) this past season and Holzer was pleased with their performance today. The talented stallion has been brought along carefully under Holzer’s watchful eye and she is beginning to see the hard work pay off, as the pair continues to display confidence in the ring.

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black

“This is the first CDI for us in a long time. I have to thank AGDF because those shows gave me the opportunity to compete a few times nationally and get him settled in the ring a bit,” said Holzer. “It’s different when you haven’t done a CDI in a while because you’re a bit rusty.”

Holzer and many of her students traveled to TIEC on their way up from Wellington, FL, after concluding the winter circuit. Arriving early on Monday of this past week, she explained that the extra time spent at the facility was well utilized, as it helped Dressed In Black become accustomed to the ambiance of the venue.

“It was great that I had a few days here to get him in the ring. He’s never seen a big ring like this before and there is a lot of atmosphere. I’m thrilled with the way he handled himself in there. The fact that he went in and felt like a teammate and a player was incredible,” noted Holzer, as she described her test, which earned the pair a score above 70%. “I was not pushing for a big test on him this time out. I wanted to go in and not over face him with the ring and I think that to me, as a rider, that is the nicest feeling. Instead of them feeling scared and nervous, they’re confident and trying their best for you.”

While in Florida for the winter circuit, Holzer focused on fitness and increasing strength with Dressed In Black. She explained, “We really worked on fitness. When you go in and do a Grand Prix it is one thing, when you go in and do a Grand Prix where they need to put more effort in, that’s a lot. We’ve been focusing on mostly getting him to a place where he’s comfortable and fit.”

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento

Holzer’s student, Chris Von Martels, followed her in the standings, placing second aboard Divertimento, owned by Lövsta Stuteri. Von Martels took over the ride on Divertimento this past winter and the pair has continued to grow their relationship with each other as they gain more competition experience.

“I was pleased with the entire test today. Again, like Ashley said, it’s a very electric atmosphere in there and it’s just a huge stadium,” commented Von Martels. “I was mostly happy that, even though it is still a relatively new relationship, it seems that with each show we’re becoming more comfortable with each other and are starting to know what to expect.”

“Our goal today was to ride a clean and accurate test and we were able to do so. That brings us both to a new level of confidence. Looking forward, we’ll look to maintain that accuracy within the test and add a little bit more of a dynamic element,” he continued.

Divertimento is typically hot horse who can be reactive to sound in the arena, but his trust in Von Martels is evident and the pair handled the atmosphere of the George Morris Arena with ease.

“I really believe the horses who tend to be hotter in the ring, when you earn their trust and confidence, they’re the ones who try the hardest for you,” he said. “Maybe it takes a little bit longer and it can be a bit challenging, but I really love this horse and I think he’s fantastic. I’m thrilled that we were able to work this out with his owners and I know that when you really win over his heart he’ll give you everything he has.”

Megan Lane and Caravella

Megan Lane and Caravella

Megan Lane (CAN) was also very pleased with her own Caravella, as she felt the pair executed the fluidity and workmanship they had been working towards throughout the winter circuit. Lane explained that the test was a major stepping stone regarding the inclusion of improvements she would like to see consistently in the ring.

“She felt relaxed and I was really happy with the test. She did everything that I’ve asked of her. We’ve been working a lot on the animation and cadence within the test. I wanted to hit that next level of brilliance, but also keep the relaxation too,” said Lane.

“That’s why I was so happy with her today, because that was what exactly happened in the ring. It felt like a breakthrough ride, and no matter the score, it just felt different. It was one of those performances for me where I rode out of the ring and knew we had accomplished something great,” she continued.

All three riders made the journey from Wellington, FL, to TIEC to contest the inaugural FEI CDI 3* presented by Adequan® and each individually voiced their opinions on the expanding venue and what the facility means for equestrian sport, as a whole.

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black in their presentation ceremony with judge Michael Osinski (USA), Sharon Decker of TIEC, and Allyn Mann of Adequan®.

“Honestly, wow. I was dumbfounded when I first came here and drove up to this facility. This is an amazing thing. We are so lucky to have the support of individuals who back and sponsor such a great horse show. It takes a vision and it’s very easy to say you want to act on that vision. I’ve had a lot of visions, but none of them have ever been executed,” laughed Holzer. “I have to say, just wow. This is unbelievable. I will be here with a lot of horses, for sure for many years to come. This is going to grow the sport in unbelievable ways.”

Von Martels echoed Holzer’s sentiments, stating that another world-class venue in the United States only benefits the riders and their horses, helping combinations to prepare for major championship events around the globe.

“I have to thank Mark Bellissimo and all of his partners. It’s just incredible what they do and I think this is truly an amazing group of individuals who actually get things done,” said Von Martels. “The whole sport and the whole industry grow because of this environment. It’s good for the equestrian economy, and honestly, it’s good for everyone’s economy.”

Lane, who like Holzer and Von Martels, is headed back north to begin training for the remainder of the spring and summer seasons, felt that the stop at TIEC was well worth it on their travels. Lane noted that she sees an array of opportunities available at the venue for both experienced Grand Prix horses and younger prospects needing practice in the competition arena.

Emily Miles and Floretienne

Emily Miles and Floretienne

“This is my first time here and honestly I had no words. I was absolutely blown away. I’m going to make sure that we are here, year after year, with all of my horses. This is an incredible venue and it’s just amazing. You can bring your top level FEI horses here and also school some of the greener horses as the same time. It really fits everything you could ever want in a competition facility,” she said.

Emily Miles (USA) and Floretienne, owned by Leslie Waterman, topped the FEI Prix St. Georges presented by Adequan® with a score of 69.316%, while Lindsay Kellock (CAN) and Royal Prinz, owned by Teresa Simmons earned second place with a 67.789%. Miles also finished in third place aboard Sir Sherlock, also owned by Leslie Waterman, receiving a 66.316%.

Competition at TIEC continues tomorrow with the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan® beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan® beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information on TIEC and to see a full list of results, please visit www.tryon.com.

23.4.2016

Guido Klatte jr made it a wonderful home win in yesterday’s highlight at Horses & Dreams in Hagen, leading a full German podium. Sixteen pairs cleared both phases of the 1’50m track but Klatte’s time of 26’83 aboard his faithful Coolio (Contendro) proved unbeatable and earned them the win ahead of their fellow countrymen, Philipp Weishaupt and Chicco  (Cordalme) who took runner up position and Holger Wulschneer in the saddle of BSC Cavity (Caretino) who setled for 3rd.

Horses & Dreams meets Denmark: Deja scores hat-trick in the Grand Prix

(Hagen a.T.W.) When observing Patrick Kittel in the warm-up arena, his facial expression already reveals which horse he is riding. If it is Deja, a satisfying smile accompanies even the most difficult exercises of dressage. Piaffe, passage, pirouettes – the premier league of dressage seems to be a playground for the Swedish rider and the 12-year-old Silvano-daughter. The duo accomplishes even the most difficult tasks dressage has to offer with the utmost ease.

“It is a marvellous feeling to ride this horse,” the 39-year-old rider, who is running a training and show stable in Nottuln, smiles. “Deja is always motivated, has a real big heart and a fantastic character, and she always performs at the highest level.” Kittel and Deja feel comfortable in Hagen at the Teutoburg Forest. They won the Small Tour in 2013 and had their victorious debut in the Grand Prix in 2014. Last year, Kittel’s radiant winner’s smile was again shining from the rostrum. It is the same this year at Horses & Dreams meets Denmark, because the duo won the Grand Prix, presented by Helenenhof – Schwiebert-family, for the third time.

Second place went to the third of the World Cup Final that was held only a couple of weeks ago, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl with Zaire BB. Third finished Fabienne Lütkemeier with D’Agostino FRH.Patrick Kittel had already announced at the beginning of her career that Deja was probably his horse for the Olympics in Rio. „We have taken the first steps on our road to Rio with this victory!“

Clueso best youngster

The first winner of a final at Horses & Dreams meets Denmark is determined. The Youngster-Tour for seven- and eight-year-old horses is very popular with the top show jumping riders as it provides the opportunity to get their futurity prospects used to the atmosphere of an international top-class tournament. The Final of the Youngster-Tour, held on the occasion of the CSI**** in Hagen at the Teutoburg Forest and presented by Bankhaus Lampe KG, was announced as jumper class including jump-off.

Jörne Sprehe and the seven-year-old Catoki-son Clueso won the competition. Second place went to the Columbian guest Rene Lopez with the eight-year-old Chacco-Blue-daughter Destiny’s Child. Philipp Weishaupt should be completely satisfied as his also only seven-year-old Hanoverian mare Call me Eva, also by Chacco-Blue, managed to jump on the rostrum in all tests of the Youngster-Tour, also earning third place in the Final.

Exciting Weekend Classes at the LA Equestrian Festival

Kristin Hardin and Michael Leon are Victorious in the Weekend Classes at the LA Equestrian Festival

It was a fantastic Friday and Saturday at the LA Equestrian Festival, with the USHJA National Hunter Derby kicking the weekend off on Friday evening and the S&S Bank Card Systems Los Angeles Grand Prix closing out Saturday at the event.

The USHJA Hunter Derby was a beautiful course created by Skip Bailey. It wound around the Large Oval, taking the riders and their mounts through a series of tests. In round two, riders showed off their skills, taking inside corners to three fences, including the trot fence, and a long gallop to the final fence, a grey oxer heading towards the in gate.

Michael Leon led on his horses heading into round two, but unfortunately had stops and one rail on three of his mounts. His final ride in round two was on his own Nil Du Buffant Rouge, leading him to first place. In second place, it was Fiona Sewell and Karl Ernst in their first Hunter Derby and third place went to Kristin Hardin and Nicole Teague’s Caruso’s Barichello Z.

Full results of the USHJA National Hunter Derby:

3 501 Caruso’s Barichello Z Nicole Teague Kristin Hardin

The S&S Bank Card Systems Grand Prix was an exciting competition, with some of the top riders in California coming to support the inaugural LA Equestrian Festival at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Course designer, Skip Bailey, designed a challenging course for the riders, which included three combinations and multiple long bending lines.

Kristin Hardin and Bert marched through the course without missing a beat, coming out of the ring as the first competitor to go into the jump-off. Amy Hess and Cavat had a little wiggle at the end of the arena, going to fence 5, but became the second to advance to the jump-off! Kevin Winkel had a hard rub through 6A and 6B, but left the rails up to only end up with two time faults on Optical Illusion, Winkel and his second ride, Osophia, advanced to the jump-off  well within the time allowed. Fences 8 and the 9AB combination caused problems for multiple pairs, including stops by Nicolette Hirt and Soehnke Theymann and a rail came down for Sarah Witten.

The jump-off provided the riders with the opportunity to test themselves and their horses in a winding course that made a tight figure eight, ending with a long galloping bending line to the final fence, the S&S Bank Card Systems jump! Hardin and Bert were once again on their stride in the jump-off, putting up a clear round in a fast 30.959 and setting a high bar for the competition. Hardin and her second mount also had a clear round, but not quite as fast, landing them in third overall. Winkel and Osophia were right behind Hardin, with a clear round but just .15 of a second slower, putting them in second! Amy Hess and Cavat had down 9A, Mark Watring and Balyon just had down fence 1 and Soehnke Theymann and Coolaroo unfortunately had down fence 8, putting them in 5, 6 and 7, respectively!

Hardin not only placed first, but also received the Bobby Drennan Perpetual Trophy. We were thankful to have Bobby’s mother Aurora Drennan and his sister Kathy Biagi there on behalf of Bobby to present the trophy to Hardin. Thank you to both Aurora and Kathy for being with us this evening and presenting the trophy.

We would also like to thank LA Saddlery for their generous support in donating $5,000 in certificates to our top 12 riders for their participation in the LA Equestrian Festival! We are so grateful for their continued support and sponsorship!

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento Win FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – April 23, 2016 – The second day of the FEI CDI 3* presented by Adequan® at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) concluded with Ashley Holzer (CAN) and Dressed In Black securing another victory, this time in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan® with a score of 71.502%. James Koford (USA) and Don Principe finished in second place with a 66.100%, while Nora Batchelder (USA) and Bahai earned a 66.050% in their second FEI competition together for third place. Competition at TIEC concludes tomorrow with the FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle CDI 3* presented by Adequan®, beginning at 2:45 p.m.

Holzer and Dressed In Black performed their first FEI Grand Prix Freestyle of the season, riding with poise and confidence in the George H. Morris Arena. The test was a good experience for both horse and rider, while Holzer admitted she made a few rider errors, which impacted their score.

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black

“I would say that I have not ridden this freestyle routine many times and I was just really trying to navigate my way through and he doesn’t know the pattern that well yet,” said Holzer. “He hasn’t ever been out into anything like this and I was just trying to keep him calm and steady through it.”

Dressed In Black has come into his own over the course of the past few months and Holzer is pleased not only with the progression in technique and understanding, but also with his willingness in the ring. The impressive 2005 Westphalian stallion (Dresemann x Sweetheart) owned by Holzer and Dr. Diane Fellows, has made a triumphant return to competition and Holzer will look to continue their progress over the next few months.

“There were some mistakes in the twos that were not his fault. What’s amazing to me though is that he goes into that ring, which has all of that feeling and electricity and he really tries hard. He’s doing the very best he can for where he is right now in his fitness level. I’m just very proud of him.”

James Koford and Don Principe

James Koford and Don Principe

James Koford and Don Principe have a longstanding partnership, as the two have been working together for more than seven years. Koford noted that gaining experience, no matter the tenure of the relationship, is still very important to the pair.

“He’s been my buddy for a long time. This is his eighth year at Grand Prix so we’ve had this freestyle since he was nine or ten and now he’s seventeen. We pretty much have it down pat,” laughed Koford. “It’s always fun to ride a freestyle in this atmosphere though. The setting is beautiful and the crowd was very enthusiastic. I’m very pleased with how it went.”

In just their second FEI CDI competition together, Nora Batchelder and Bahai finished their Grand Prix Freestyle choreography with a score of 66.050%. Batchelder of Williston, FL, and the 2004 Hanoverian mare (Baroncelli x SPS Rose) rose to the occasion and handled the mare’s anxiety in the large arena well during their test.

Nora Batchelder and Bahai

Nora Batchelder and Bahai

“This is our second CDI together and it’s been great to ride in this venue. It’s just unbelievable and the footing is incredible. The first test yesterday, she was a little bit worried with the atmosphere and the flags, but she was more confident today,” commented Batchelder.

“This is our third time riding the freestyle and the music gives her a bit of confidence. I was proud of her because she definitely stepped up to overcome some of what she was nervous about yesterday. It was a great way to finish the weekend,” she continued.

Ashley Holzer and Dressed In Black in their presentation ceremony with Sharon Decker of TIEC, judge Linda Zang (USA), and Allyn Mann of Adequan®.

Adequan® has been a longstanding supporter of dressage for a number of years and served as title sponsor for this week’s inaugural FEI CDI 3*. Allyn Mann of Adequan® was on hand throughout the week and discussed the presence and importance of their sponsorship at the facility, as it generates interest and ultimately expands the sport.

“This goes all the way back to the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival and the relationship between Mark [Bellissimo] and myself. Both of us really believed that venue would be something special. Coming to Tryon and seeing this beautiful facility, knowing that we’re dealing with the same footprint for the sport, is very special,” said Mann. “This will be a wonderful place for the dressage world to come and it will be a game changer for the community.”

Renowned judge Linda Zang (USA) also commented on the competition at TIEC this week and expressed her excitement with the possibilities and opportunities the facility offers competitors of all levels.

“I think that we had a great group of riders here this week and I was very glad to see a lot of Canadian combinations in this group. This will become a great stop for people traveling from the south back up north after the winter season,” elaborated Zang. “I think we’ll see more and more riders here. I’m hopeful that there will be a lot more American riders who can swing through as well. This venue will encourage more CDI competitions outside of Florida and California, which I think is fantastic.”

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento Win FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3*

Chris Von Martels (CAN) piloted Divertimento, owned by Lövsta Stuteri, to their first FEI CDI win together in the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 3* presented by Adequan® receiving a 70.490%. Karen Pavicic (CAN) and Don Daiquiri finished in second place with a 69.745%, while Megan Lane (CAN) and Caravella rounded out the top three with a 69.218%.

Von Martels and Divertimento have continued to solidify their partnership and displayed a continued sense of growth and understanding in the ring. Von Martels expressed his excitement with the progress and noted that he felt like this was the best the two have performed together.

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento

Chris Von Martels and Divertimento

“I was very delighted with him today. He was very with me and I think today was even more electric in the stadium than yesterday, because there were more spectators here this afternoon,” said Von Martels. “He was really in tune with me and waiting on my aids.”

“I really believe that this was the best test I’ve ridden on him in the way our relationship has gone so far. I’m very happy. I think this is my fifth show with him and each show you learn something new and take something else away from it. Now, I really would like to keep these nice, clean and accurate tests, but add a bit more power and brilliance where I can,” he continued.

Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiri

Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiri

Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiri picked up second place with a strong showing, receiving a 69.218% from the judging panel. Pleased with their performance, Pavicic felt as though she entered the ring with more horse behind her leg today than yesterday in the FEI Grand Prix.

“He was much better today than yesterday. I was happier with my ride overall and I still would like to have a little bit more energy and brilliance within the movements. I was going for a clean test and he felt more energetic and in front of my leg,” she elaborated.

Megan Lane and Caravella

Megan Lane and Caravella

“I’m overall really happy with this week. A big thank you to Mark Bellissimo and his team for this, also a huge thank you to Adequan® for their support. Without their sponsorship, shows like this wouldn’t be possible,” she noted. “It’s so impressive and I will come back here with every opportunity for sure.”

Lane, who also placed third in yesterday’s Grand Prix, felt that improvements made in the day prior, carried over to today’s class with her own Caravella. The duo produced a harmonious and balanced test, only hindered by a small mistake in the one tempis.

“Honestly, I feel a lot of the same sentiments as Chris. I went for a little bit more energy today and had an unfortunate mistake in the one tempis, but she gave me everything I asked of her in terms of the cadence,” explained Lane. “There are improvements in the piaffe for sure, which I was really pleased with throughout the show.”

“She reacted really well to this stadium and this atmosphere. This was a great show for us and we were able to execute a lot of the concepts we’ve been focusing on in our training,” she continued.

Lindsay Kellock and Royal Prinz

Lindsay Kellock and Royal Prinz

Lindsay Kellock (CAN) and Royal Prinz, owned by Teresa Simmons, won the FEI Intermediaire I CDI 3* presented by Adequan® with a score of 67.684%. Jessica Jo Tate (USA) and Kynynmont Gunsmoke’s Gideon, owned by Pamela Liddell, finished in second place, receiving a 66.368%, while Emily Miles (USA) and Sir Sherlock, owned by Leslie Waterman, earned third place with a score of 59.263%.

Eduardo Alvarez Aznar rocks concluding 2016 Spring MET CSI3* Grand Prix

Spanish rider Eduardo Alvarez Aznar and Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot concluded the 2016 Spring MET with a very popular home win in the CSI3* Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort Grand Prix. The 1.50 competition counted towards the Longines Ranking, and closed off the fourth and final tour of this year’s edition of the Spring MET.

Five riders out of the 39 in the competition managed to produce clear rounds over the thirteen fence track that caused trouble for many combinations. The track designed by Javier Trenor included a triple combination early on set at fence four, an open water at jump eight followed by a related distance to a combination and then a skinny white upright as fence eleven before a black plank waited at fence thirteen another jump later. The ingredients proved to be challenging for many, and in the end no less than eleven riders chose to retire.

“The course was quite tough, with some big and wide oxers. Also the triple combination was a bit tricky as you came in on a bit of an angle. But, it was nicely build and fair for the horses,” explained Alvarez Aznar about the first round track.

With three of the clear rounds coming from Spanish riders, the home crowds were guaranteed something to celebrate following the jump-off – but would they be able to take the win against their British and French challengers?

The jump-off was all about galloping, and after the fourth jump – the former a- and b-element of the triple combination – it was open for going flat out as three long stretches waited. Still, with the white upright at fence eleven as the penultimate fence and then the plank as the last challenge – caution and attention was required.

Spain’s Gonzalo Anon Suarez opened up, and put the pressure on with another clear round aboard Qlamp d’Ivraie to stop the clock at 47.11 seconds. The time looked possible to beat though, as Anon Suarez did not take the very last risk around the shortened track. Neither did Primitivo Nieves, also representing Spain, but still he had to see the final fence fall to the ground and finally settled for fifth place on Galiant VDS.

Eduardo Alvarez Aznar and Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot were next in, and put on more speed on the stretches using the ground-covering canter of his stallion to his advantage. Crossing the finish line, Alvarez Aznar took over the lead with a time of 45.78 seconds aboard the 11-year-old son of L’Arc de Triomphe.

French contender Guillaume Foutrier put in a good attempt on the impressive Brentano d’Amaury, and although clear he could not match Eduardo or Gonzalo’s times slotting into temporary third. He would soon be relegated by last-to-go, the only girl in the jump-off: Anna Edwards from Great Britain. Urging on the 10-year-old stallion Blazer B, that has a massive jump, Edwards really went for it – but in the end she was still a second behind Alvarez Aznar who could celebrate a win on home soil.

“My horse is not one of the quickest, so I tried to get some sharp turns and kept him in the same rhythm throughout the course. Perhaps I was a bit faster to the penultimate vertical,” detailed the winner.

Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot is Eduardo Alvarez Aznar’s Olympic candidate, and was given a break after the World Cup season only to slowly return to competition the last two months with Oliva Nova being the stage of his return in the big classes. “Now I will focus on keeping him in shape throughout the summer and towards Rio,” Alvarez Aznar said. “I will jump the Longines Global Champions Tour in Madrid, then the Nations Cup show in Lisbon and then I have a spot as an individual in Rotterdam. After that we will see, but it will be all about keeping Rokfeller in good shape and happy.”

Together, Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot and Eduardo Alvarez Aznar have already done two championships for Spain: The 2015 European Championships and the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Now, they are aiming for their third. “I definitely hope for a spot on the team for Rio,” said Eduardo.

This was the Spanish rider’s fourth time in Oliva, and he hopes to come back for the 2016 Autumn MET. “There are always improvements being done here, it gets better and better for every time I return. It’s great to have such a place and such organizers here in Spain.”

Show director Bettina Pöhls was also happy with her first edition as chief-in-charge of the Spring MET. “The inaugural fourth part of the tour – the MET IV – was a great success and it was a super finish here today with a Spanish victory under amazing weather conditions.”

“We are very pleased with the great group of riders we have had here during the 2016 Spring MET, and look forward to welcome everybody back in October for the Autumn MET.”
