The overall team ranking points have tightened dramatically following a spectacular Global Champions League of Madrid event, which saw the top three teams close the gap to be within just four points of each other overall. As the GCL season gallops towards its midway point, team tactics and strategy come heavily into play, with the action hotting up in the unique team competition.

Currently, Valkenswaard United lead the way on 145 points, with this weekend in Chantilly seeing Alberto Zorzi and Eduardo Menezes team up once more. The pair took a strong silver at the GCL Shanghai, and following team mates John Whitaker and Bertram Allen’s wins in Miami Beach and Hamburg, the pressure will be on the combination to do well again this weekend and keep the team at the top of the leader board.

Just three points behind team ranking leaders, Valkenswaard United, the Monaco Aces stand on 142 points overall, and will field Daniel Bluman and Leopold van Asten for this Sunday’s competition, with the pairing looking to knock the blue, white and orange team off the top spot.

Third place ranking team and with 141 points, the Antwerp Diamonds will see a new pairing of Audrey Coulter, who has been incredibly strong on the League competition this season so far, helping to secure a win in Antwerp, two silver medals in Miami Beach and Hamburg, and a bronze medal in Madrid. She’ll be joined by Marc Houtzager, fresh from his recent bronze medal at the LGCT of Shanghai.

This weekend, Miami Glory will see the formidable combination of World Number 3 Scott Brash and Georgina Bloomberg back in action for the seventh leg of the League Championship. Also in action this week with be the GCL of Shanghai gold medal winning pairing of David Will and Andreas Kreuzer, with the young riders looking for a repeat of their sensational win in China.

The Cannes Stars will also see a new pairing of Roosje Brouwers and U25 rider Kevin Jochems, with both riders hoping to follow the lead of team mates Roger-Yves Bost and Marco Kutscher, following their silver medal in Madrid. Edwina Tops-Alexander and Jessica Springsteen will be the strong pairing for the Shanghai Swans, a combination who know each other inside out and have trained together for years. Paris Jets puts forward Olympic heavyweight, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, and the talented Olivier Philippaerts, the young Belgian rider who helped the team score their best result so far – a strong third place in Shanghai.

Vienna Eagles will see U25 rider Paris Sellon return to the team, and after her stunning clear at the Global Champions League of Madrid, she’ll be looking to repeat her debut as she joins GCL veteran, the experienced Rodrigo Pessoa. Alberto Zorzi and Eduardo Menezes will team up once more for Valkenswaard United, with the pair taking silver at the GCL Shanghai.

Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani and Faleh Al Ajami will be the team riders for Doha Fursan Qatar, and the speedy Laura Renwick will team up with Marlon Zanotelli for the Rome Gladiators, with the pairing hoping to keep the momentum of their recent win at the Global Champions League of Madrid. Young Spanish star and U25 rider Gonzalo Anon Suarez will be back in action for Madrid in Motion, this time teaming up with Brazilian rider Pedro Veniss.

The Global Champions League of Chantilly will take place on Sunday 29th May at 16:45 local time. The full competition will be broadcast live on the Global Champions League website, click here for more information.

Lexington, Va. – May 27, 2016 – The inaugural United States Eventing Association (USEA) Intercollegiate Eventing Championship begins today at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. Beginner Novice through CCI* level riders from ten colleges and universities around the East Coast make up ten teams that will compete for the title of Champion.

“History is being made here with the first ever intercollegiate eventing championship. I can’t wait to look back 20 years from now and think how this is the day it all started,” said USEA CEO Rob Burk. “The college riders that are here this weekend are the future of the sport, and the USEA is proud to partner with the Virginia Horse Center to make this possible for intercollegiate eventing and for the sport as a whole.”

To account for differences in level difficulty, each rider’s score is multiplied by a coefficient appropriate for their level, and then the individual scores are added together to determine the team score. Only the best three individual scores will count towards the team score, so teams of four will have one “drop” score.

The coefficient system that will be applied at the Championship is as follows:
Beginner Novice: 1.1
Novice: 1
Training: 0.9
Preliminary: 0.85
Intermediate: 0.75
CCI*: 0.75

The team with the lowest score at the end of three phases will be named the 2016 Intercollegiate Champion. Team ribbons and prizes will be awarded through fourth place.

The Spirit Award will be given to the college or university that shows the most school spirit and best decorations in the “College Town” stabling complex. Students will show their school pride by decorating both an approximately 12’x12′ designated space in the East Concourse as well as in their stable area.

Follow the USEA and Virginia Horse Trials on Facebook for photos and updates all weekend. Stay tuned to the USEA website for detailed coverage of the competition.

Jerome Guery and Alicante top class with stunning LGCT Chantilly CSI5* speed win

Release date: 27/05/2016

Photo: LGCT / Stefano Grasso

The first day of action at the spectacular Longines Global Champions Tour of Chantilly got underway today with two hot CSI5* classes as temperatures rose in the unique French destination. A truly international field of world class riders, featuring top riders from over 20 countries, including World Number 2 and LGCT Ranking leader Christian Ahlmann (GER), and World Number 3 Scott Brash (GBR) took to the picturesque grass arena for the first time this weekend, ahead of Saturday’s LGCT Grand Prix of Chantilly.

It was the Belgian rider, Jerome Guery (BEL), with his stunning 11 year old grey stallion Alicante who took the feature class win this afternoon, after an impressive speed compeition saw the pair take the top spot over a second clear of the rest of the field in 69.83s.

Marlon Módolo Zanotelli (BRA) and Extra van Essene took a strong second place, jumping clear in 70.91s, and Romain Duguet (SUI) took third in 72.42s with 11 year old bay stallion Otello du Soleil. Daniel Bluman (COL) who won the opening class of the day, continued his fine form to come in 4th with Conconcreto Apardi, just two tenths of a second behind Romain.

The 1.50m €25,000 prize purse course set by Luc Musette was a great test for the top riders and horses in the world, with light poles and full height verticals ensuring delicate and careful jumping, but the wide expansive grass arena and large striding distances meaning a fast pace gallop was necessary to meet the time allowed. Just eight of the 45 starters jumped clear, with Alberto Zorzi (ITA) with Rose du Valon, 18 year old Lisa Nooren (NED) and Vdl Groep Sabech d’Ha, and Faleh Suwead Al Ajami (QAT) with Come Soon those finishing in the top 10. Kevin Jochems (NED) was the first rider to go, and the first to jump clear – leading the field for much of the way with his 11 year old chestnut gelding Zanzibar. The pair finished in 6th place overall, however were beaten by the big striding Alicante, and Jerome Guery (BEL) who looks to be on phenomenal form following his run of success. With two top horses at the LGCT Chantilly, Jerome will be one to watch in tomorrow’s competition, and will undoubtably looking to maintain momentum through the weekend.

Today’s opening class win went to Columbia’s Daniel Bluman with his 10 year old bay mare, the aptly named ‘Believe’, after the pair rode a stunningly quick and careful round in the beautiful Chantilly setting. Ireland’s young speed demon Bertram Allen (IRL) set the pace for the field earlier in the class with his phenomenally fast chestnut gelding Quiet Easy. Bertram was the first to break the 70second time barrier, raising the bar for the rest of the field after he and the 10 year old horse crossed the line clear in 69.04s.

The course was a fair test for the riders with enough questions asked to challenge the best combinations in the world. The penultimate double caught a few of the top riders out – come in too fast and the first rail would fall, come in too steady and the back rail would go. Notable combinations in action were Ludger Beerbaum (GER) with Casello, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) with Casall ASK, Luciana Diniz (POR) with Fit For Fun, Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani (QAT) and First Devision, LGCT Ranking leader Christian Ahlmann (GER) with Cornado II, Scott Brash (GBR) with Hello Forever and Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) with Caretina de Joter.

Local rider Jérôme Hurel (FRA) was the highest place home finisher with Urano, taking third place overall after an impressive round to cross the line in 69.43s.

The two CSI5* classes were the first test for the world class field ahead of tomorrow’s Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Chantilly, with many of the best horses in the world in action on the stunning grass arena, set against the iconic Château de Chantilly and the beautiful Grand Stables, which are surrounded by peaceful parkland, gardens and the Forêt de Chantilly.

Tomorrow at 12:45 the international field of world class riders will take centre stage once more. All the action will be broadcast live via GCT TV as the momentum builds towards Saturday’s Grand Prix, which takes place at 15:30 local time.

The Grand Prix of Chantilly will played out against the exquisite backdrop of the Château de Chantilly and the beautiful Grand Stables, which are surrounded by parkland, gardens and the Forêt de Chantilly. Between the elite level show jumping competitions, visitors can enjoy the Musée Vivant du Cheval (Living Horse Museum), created by Yves Bienaimé in 1982, where the equestrian world of the past and present is brought to life in visually stunning equestrian shows and dressage demonstrations. Then it’s back to the picturesque arena for a stunning display of horsemanship from the world’s best riders.

Longines Global Champions Tour of Chantilly is set to be an exciting event on the 2016 calendar as fans and sports men and women from around the world come together in the grounds of a beautiful French château to enjoy show jumping at its finest.

Lucy Deslauriers Claims Top Honors in R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship at Devon Horse Show

Devon, PA – May 27, 2016 – Junior Weekend at Devon Horse Show continued Friday as eight winners from sections of the four equitation divisions were invited back to the Dixon Oval to contend for the 2016 R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship. For the first time, the coveted award was presented to the winner of a stand-alone class, rather than on an overall high-point basis.

Each of the eight riders qualified for the Championship class by placing first in one of the equitation divisions – the ASPCA Maclay, the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal, the WIHS Jumper Phase or the Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search.

This year, it was Lucy Deslauriers who rose up to earn the title, besting the field of talented young riders to claim the honor.

“It’s an honor to qualify, let alone come out with a win,” Deslauriers expressed. “This show and the championship have a lot of prestige and tradition. Qualifying was something I was definitely proud to do. I was excited to have another opportunity. It was definitely a little bit trickier having another class and finding a few more distances, but I was overall very excited to do the class.”

Deslauriers, who trains with Stacia Madden of Beacon Hill Show Stables, chose to ride Class Action. The 17-year-old superstar carried her to wins in the WIHS and Talent Search on Thursday.

“I felt really confident in my rides yesterday on this horse,” Deslauriers said. “He had been in this ring twice already, so I knew it would be a good decision to choose him. As long I didn’t mess up, he was going to do his job. He feels really great, especially for being 17. We try not to do too much with him and respect his age. He knows his job. We try to do as much as we can, but trust that he’ll respond.”

Madden was very proud of Deslauriers’ performance and praised the rising talent’s attention to detail in her rounds.

“Lucy loves the sport,” Madden said. “She’s an unbelievable stylist, and I think the judges really appreciate her natural style and ability to ride with the motion with the horses. I think all of her jumper experience that she has gained through the years has given her an extreme amount of confidence when she goes into the equitation ring.”

With blue ribbons already under their belts, Daisy Farish, TJ O’Mara, Madison Goetzmann, McKayla Langmeier, Maya Nayyar, Katherine Bundy and Ellie Ferrigno also tried their hand at the Alan Lohman-designed course.

Farish delivered a well-executed round atop Cassio and impressed the judges to secure the reserve champion honors.

“I think [the class] was awesome and added another element of challenge,” Farish said. “It brought a whole other feeling to it. First we have all our classes, and now the added championship class. It gives it an important feeling. I think Lucy was leading whether it was the other format or not, so she deserved it.”

Daisy Farish and Cassio

Following in third place was Goetzmann, who earned her ticket by winning a section of the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal on Thursday. Fourth place was awarded to Ellie Ferrigno, who won a section of the Maclay earlier on Friday morning. Langmeier ended up taking home fifth, while Bundy, Nayyar and O’Mara all experienced some unfortunate difficulties on course to finish sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Madden, who holds a seat on the USHJA equitation committee, explained the committee’s thought process surrounding the decision to update the format of the Ronnie Mutch Championship.

“The format of the class was really to have the kids be able to go head-to-head,” Madden explained. “Before, there would be two or three winners, and they were trying to break away from the idea of having multiple winners in a class that is supposed to deem the ‘championship rider.’

“I think it’s important for everyone to understand that we weren’t trying to add another class or see more jumping,” Madden continued. “We really wanted to give these kids an opportunity at a national horse show like this to compete head-to-head in the middle of the show year instead of making them wait until the end. I like the format, and I thought it ran well. It was a very different vibe behind the scenes, for me anyway. You had more focus on the class and less focus on all the point calculations.”

The action will continue with the Junior Hunter divisions on Saturday. Highlight events during the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair will include the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CSI4*.

The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the longest running and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. With the grandeur of Philadelphia\’s prestigious Main Line setting the stage, the event features a world-class field that annually ranks among the most prominent internationally. The event also includes the Country Fair that offers world-class shopping, rides and games for kids, multiple dining options and special entertainment events.

Madison Goetzmann and Wrigley Go for Devon Blue in Junior Jumpers

The Junior Jumper riders continued to showcase their skill Friday as the highlight event for the evening lineup at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. Longtime Devon competitor and former Pony Hunter Champion, Madison Goetzmann and her veteran mount Wrigley bested a 10-horse jump-off to take home the Devon blue with a speedy clear effort at the end of the night.

Madison Goetzmann and Wrigley

“I love this show,” expressed Goetzmann. “Sometimes when I’m cantering in this ring, I look over to the Gold Ring and I reminisce about going around on the ponies. It’s weird to move up so quickly, but it’s such an amazing feeling being in this atmosphere with all the fans. It’s really great.”

Eve Jobs and Sandor de la Pomme

Eve Jobs and Sandor de la Pomme

Francesca Dildabanian set the time to beat as the second to return for the tiebreaker with Catika Van De Helle. The pair produced the first double clear round, breaking the beam at 42.636 seconds. One round later, Eve Jobs rode with her eye on the prize aboard Sandor De La Pomme. They easily moved into the lead with a time of 37.932 seconds, but would only hold the top spot for a few moments.

Goetzmann’s speedy mare Wrigley was in top form and easily sliced the sharp turns, clearing each obstacle. They galloped over the final oxer with the time in hand, crossing the finish line in 36.801 seconds.

“The plan was to have a fast and efficient jump off,” explained Goetzmann. “However, I did not want to overdo anything or do any risky turns that can result in a fault or anything like that. Going in there I wanted to get the Devon blue, but I didn’t want to get her too wound up. My mare is super great about the tight turns and the gallop. We caught every jump at a nice gallop and she jumped her heart out for me. She was awesome.”

Jobs had one more chance to take the top spot with her second qualified mount Quickley 3, but in their effort to catch the time they lowered the height of the final oxer. They stopped the clock at 35.648 seconds, over a full second ahead of Goetzmann, but four faults would mean settling for fourth place. Goetzmann picked up the win, while Jobs and Sandor De La Pomme placed second. Dildabanian rounded out the top three aboard Catika Van De Helle.

“It’s such an amazing feeling to walk into the ring, knowing you have an awesome horse under you,” smiled Goetzmann. “I’m so grateful to have her as my horse. She always gives me the confidence to go in there and to win.”

Madison Goetzmann and Wrigley

Madison Goetzmann and Wrigley

Goetzmann added, “Practice makes perfect with horses. I’ve been riding Wrigley for over a year now. Each day we grow together. Each day we’re working on something new. There is always something to work on with your horse. I find that super helpful to keep in mind, when I’m working with her. We trust each other. She has my trust and I have her trust. We’ve really developed a great partnership.”

Goetzmann is now focused on winning Saturday’s main event, the $20,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior Jumper Classic. On Sunday, the Pony Jumper division will take over the Dixon Oval. Later this week, the best in the country will compete in Thursday’s $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CSI4*.

Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Welcomes Sweet Briar College as Special Guests

The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair welcomed special guests on Friday night, the alumni and students from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va.  More than 100 alumni and prospective students from the region attended the show after receiving an invitation from Wayne W. Grafton, Chairman of the Devon Horse Show.

“Last fall we came here for an event and had a great weekend,” said Phillip Stone, President of Sweet Briar College. “Wayne told us about the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair and asked us if we would be interested in coming here for an event during the show. We knew the reputation of this event so we jumped at it. This is the first of what we hope will be annual event.”

Grafton also knew the reputation of Sweet Briar College and became inspired by them.  Last March the board decided to close the school after 114 years. The Alumni stepped up and raised $28.5 million in 100 days to save the college. Mr. Grafton heard about their herculean effort and wanted to form a partnership.

“The Devon Horse Show is so grateful to be in a partnership with Sweet Briar College,” said Grafton.  “After listening to what they have done they inspired me to move forward with all of the improvements here. They are the stars.”

In its first year back, Sweet Briar College won the conference championship renewing the reputation that the college has long enjoyed.

“For generations our students have been winning equestrian titles across America and more than one third of our students ride,” said Mary Pope Hudson, Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development. “We are really fortunate to be here at Devon to launch a partnership with them.”

New Jaguar SUV Tops 2016 Derby Prizes

In 1947, the Devon Cottage was erected on the showgrounds and raffled off. Over the years, people have won cars, trips, furs, jewelry, TVs, champagne, Scotch, whiskey and more.

While much has changed with Devon raffles, their importance as a major part of the fair’s  fundraising for Bryn Mawr Hospital remains constant. This year’s raffles are no less exciting, including the Derby car is the all-new Jaguar F-PACE crossover vehicle. The 2-year lease on Jaguar’s new luxury performance SUV was donated to the Country Fair by Jaguar Land Rover Main Line.

“Devon is a fun and exciting event that we are really happy to be involved with and Bryn Mawr Hospital being the benefactor is just wonderful,” said Michael Smyth, President of Jaguar Land Rover Main Line.

The car is not the only prize in the Devon Derby. Ticket buyers also have a chance to win an original leather belt designed by Pinnell Custom Leather, a man or woman’s bicycle from Human Zoom, Bikes and Boards, two Phillies tickets donated by the D’Anjolell Memorial Homes. a $250 gift certificate to Capital Grille, donate by Capitol Grille in King of Prussia.

The Derby is also not the only raffle at Devon. You can also buy a chance for Operation Goldmine. This year, the prize is an 18kt white gold pendant set with an oval blue sapphire surrounded by a halo of classic diamonds. The simple elegance of this piece is classic and is valued at $8,000. A limited number of chances are available. The necklace was donated by Kellmer Jewelers of Haverford.

All prizes this year are donated and the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair appreciates the merchants who help make the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair a success every year.

The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair pledged $2 million over five years to Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Capital Campaign to build a state of the art medical facility. In 2015, the second year of the pledge, the Country Fair gave a record $500,000. The Country Fair has donated more than $47 million to the hospital over the years.

Derby tickets sell for $2 each or $10 for a book of 6. You can buy them at the Derby table on the grounds. The winners will be chosen and announced Sunday, June 5. Operation Goldmine tickets cost $25 and can be bought at the Information Booth during the show. The Operation Goldmine winner will be chosen and announced Thursday, June 2. Laura Chapot Stacks the Leaderboard in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix

Saugerties, NY (May 28, 2016): The weekend sounded off with a bang at HITS-on-the-Hudson I, and there was no shortage of excitement in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix.

Four horses and riders returned to test the jump-off course, designed by Marina Azevedo of Campinas, Brazil, in Friday’s class. It was once again Neshanic Station, New Jersey, equestrian Laura Chapot and her mount Thornhill Kate, who swept the field to garner their second blue ribbon this week after a $10,000 Brook Ledge Open Welcome win.

“I always enjoy coming to HITS Saugerties to see what’s new and improved,” said Chapot after her victory. “The course designer did an excellent job; it was a mixed field with great horses, some youngsters and also very good riders. There were challenges in all parts of the course, and there wasn’t one specific area that came down for everyone.”

The first to return to the jump-off were the winners themselves, Chapot and Thornhill Kate, co-owned by Mary Chapot. They started off on a gallop, moving efficiently through the shortened course—Chapot made the decision to cut between a combination to the last fence, which shaved crucial seconds off the clock. They passed the timers fault-free in 42.199 for the eventual win.

“My mare is very fast naturally, so I want to keep her as level-headed throughout the course as I can, while keeping her on a steady rhythm,” said Chapot of Thornhill Kate.

Leslie Burr Howard, of Darien, Connecticut, and Up and Blue Chappelle, owned by Peter Howard, followed Chapot. A rail at the mid-course combination kept them from the lead with a time of 46.722, ultimately placing them fourth for their efforts.

Next to contend was Christine McCrea, of East Windsor, Connecticut, and Wannick WH, owned by Candy Tribble & Windsor Show Stables, Inc. McCrea came in third in Wednesday’s Brook Ledge, and was hungry for the blue ribbon. She and the gallant bay stallion powered through the course, opting for the outside track around the combination to the last fence. They clocked in clear at 43.461, which would capture second-place.

The final rider with the chance to take the lead was Chelsea Moss of Medford, New Jersey aboard Calida, owned by Stormfront Stables, LLC. Moss and Calida crossed the timers without fault in 46.350, just enough to edge out Howard and claim the third-place prize.
