Leslie Burr Howard Claims the Win in the $75,000 HITS Grand Prix

$

Saugerties, NY (May 30, 2016): The grand finale of an exciting first week at HITS-on-the-Hudson commenced with the $75,000 HITS Grand Prix.

A talented field of exhibitors tested the course designed by Marina Azevedo of Campinas, Brazil, but only two would advance to the jump-off to compete for the blue. The victor would prove to be Leslie Burr Howard of Darien, Connecticut, and Up and Blue Chappelle, owned by Peter and Gabriel Guerra Howard.

“The course designer, Marina, has been doing a great job this week,” said Howard. “This course was laid out thoughtfully; today wasn’t too big but it was tricky enough, especially for this amount of prize money, which is great to jump for. All the classes have been super—it’s not too big, not too little, and it’s planned well in where the jumps were placed.”

Sarah Segal of Flemington, New Jersey, was first to challenge the first round of jumping efforts with Ubris, owned by Chartwell. A rail at the vertical immediately following the mid-course triple combination kept them out of the jump-off, but as the fastest pair with four faults in 77.209, they ultimately landed in third-place.

Three trips passed before Wellington, Florida, equestrian Jimmy Torano piloted Daydream, co-owned with Danielle Torano, to the first fault-free trip of the first-round, proving the course could be conquered.

Following Torano’s first round, several valiant rides took their chance at the course, including fourth-place Matthew Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, aboard Cuchica, owned by Wyndmont, Inc. Williams clocked in with four faults in 78.840.

Christine McCrea of East Windsor, Connecticut, also made the top five piloting Wannick WH, owned by Candy Tribble and Windsor Show Stables, Inc. They passed the timers with four faults in 79.025 just behind Williams for the fifth-place prize.

It looked as though Torano had it in the bag with a clear round, until Howard took her turn at the course. The crowd cheered with excitement when they clocked in clear, providing the class with a jump-off.

It was down to Torano and Howard, both seasoned competitors with a plethora of grand prix wins and titles under their belts. Howard, an Olympic Gold and Silver medalist and Torano, with two prestigious rides in the 1999 and 2000 FEI World Cup Final would battle it out for the win.

Torano returned first, navigating the course efficiently as he and Daydream crossed the timers in 41.43.

Howard followed suit, knowing she and her mount needed to be clear and just a hair faster to take home the $22,500 winner’s share.

“My plan at first was just to watch Jimmy and if he was super-fast, I was not going to jump-off and just settle for second because she is young,” said Howard of her plan with Up and Blue Chapelle. “He was careful but not too quick—she was great.”

It was certainly a rewarding choice. Howard and her mount blazed through the timers fault-free in 39.884 to capture the win.

“She is a super mare,” said Howard after her victory. “She is very powerful and is settling into her prime. This was a great win.”

The crowd is an educated crowd, and they really appreciate it. They are very enthusiastic. I think the management here at Devon has really made great efforts with the facility. Everything is first class. ”

Thirty-eight entries turned out for the first FEI ranked event of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair on Tuesday evening. Six of those were able to master the Kelvin Bywater track and return for the tiebreaker. Ali Wolff was the pathfinder during the jump-off, setting the pace to beat with Quirie 2 in a clear 39.51 seconds.

“My trainer, Michelle Grubb, knows me so well – we’ve been together for about 12 years,” said Wolff. “Pretty much every time she tells me to go my own speed. I am so competitive, and I am my own worst enemy. If McLain went before me I probably would not be sitting here. I try and ride the horse underneath me.”

Ali Wolff and Quirie 2

Ali Wolff and Quirie 2

Wolff added, “Quirie was my third string horse. He was struggling to get around the 1.40m last year. I just have to keep taking a step back, and I am very proud of where he’s come. He’s stepped up to my first horse. He went to Mexico with me and really, really put on his big boy pants. Since then he’s been super confident, and I can’t say enough about him.”

Wolff’s lead did not last long as Ward entered the ring next with Tina La Boheme. With sharp turns and a speedy gallop they bested Wolff by almost three seconds when they crossed the finish line in a faultless 36.73 seconds. Molly Ashe Cawley and Pjotter Van De Zonnehoeve attempted to catch Ward, but had to settle for fourth place when they had a rail in the combination.

Ward was next in the jump-off order with his second mount Rothchild, and after a short break in the action to prepare, they returned to the ring. Knowing he had a good lead, Ward was a bit more conservative, but still laid down a fast and clear round in just 39.18 seconds to take over second place, while Wolff would place third.

McLain Ward and Rothchild

Ward laughed, “Rothchild doesn’t like horses jumping next to him, he doesn’t like horses jumping at him, he doesn’t like gray horses, he doesn’t like carriages. There are a lot of things to avoid here! The schooling area can be interesting, but he is what he is. I didn’t have very long, but I am not going to rush him. I only jumped four or five jumps. You can’t go fast. You have to really take your time.”

Rothchild was a horse found by Ward’s father Barney, and he has always had a special place in Ward’s heart. Tina La Boheme also has a special place in Ward’s heart, as he owns the talented young mare together with his father’s old friend Arthur Hawkins.

“Arty Hawkins is a great horseman and a member of the Show Hunter Hall of Fame, a dear friend of my dad,” explained Ward. “He was there when I was born. He owns the majority; I own a small piece of her. Last year he said if you ever see a nice horse I’d like to do something. This is the horse.”

Tina La Boheme also has a unique tie to the Devon Horse Show, as she is related to the 2008 Grand Prix winner Night Train. “Tina and Night Train are both quite strong, but good jumpers, really good technique, careful but at the same time quite brave,” noted Ward. “It’s nice, I have a soft spot in my heart for Night Train. I bought him and rode him in the beginning, so I’ve had a lot of luck with that breeding.”

Ward and Tina La Boheme will return to the Dixon Oval Thursday night for the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CSI4*. The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the longest running and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. With the grandeur of Philadelphia’s prestigious Main Line setting the stage, the event features a world-class field that annually ranks among the most prominent internationally. The event also includes the Country Fair that offers world-class shopping, rides and games for kids, multiple dining options and special entertainment events.

Championships for Haness, Tosh and Payne in Professional Hunter Divisions at Devon Horse Show

Devon, PA – May 31, 2016 – Kenny Wheeler Sr. celebrated his 88th birthday by watching Hunt Tosh pilot the Wheeler Family’s Patriot to the championship in the Green Conformation Hunter division at the Devon Horse Show.

The Wheelers, proud owners of Patriot, handed their own Just For Fun – Two For One Challenge Trophy to Tosh and Patriot after the duo earned enough points for the championship.

“To win the trophy Kenny was handing out on his birthday in a division that is so important to their family is really fun,” Tosh said. “This show has the best horses, the best riders; it’s so hard to win here, so when you can win at a place like this with competition like this, it’s awesome.”

Hunt Tosh and Patriot

Tosh and Patriot claimed first and third place over fences on Monday, returning on Tuesday to add another blue to their collection in the handy.

“Patriot is a new horse, and he’s quite green,” Tosh explained. “Devon is only his third show facility. With the little mileage he has doing this, I didn’t know how he’d be, but he walked in here and was great. He’s been champion every time he’s shown, and he’s just a really fun horse. He’s super brave and careful, and he’s a beautiful jumper. He just tries harder every time, so he’s been great. We’re very excited to have him.”

The division’s reserve championship was awarded to Scott Stewart and Stephanie Danhakl’s stallion, Denver.

Earlier in the day, Nick Haness returned with Technicolor to claim the First Year Green Hunter championship. The duo started the day with two blues under their belt, and returned for the stake to wow the judges with their round, receiving a score of 95 and earning the blue ribbon.

“It was pretty tight for the points for the championship,” Haness said. “I knew we had to come in strong for the last round to clench the championship. The pressure building up to it is so intense that once I walk into the ring, it’s so easy and natural and just so much fun. He makes it easy for me. He’s a really special horse.”

The reserve championship in the First Years went to Kelley Farmer and Publicized.

The Second Year Green Hunter division also wrapped up on Tuesday with Chris Payne and Truman taking home the division’s championship. The duo managed to best the competitive division with their three blue ribbons from Monday. Truman, who is owned by Debbie Bass, is only just returning to the show ring after having last year off.

“There are so many great horses in the Second Years,” Payne said. “Anybody could have won it at any time, and I’m just very fortunate that the cards fell my way. I’m so fortunate to have such a great horse, and Debbie Bass is an amazing owner that has allowed him to come into his own to be so successful. He’s never lost a hack class. He’s a beautiful mover, he’s a beautiful horse, and he always tries to be a good horse and do the right thing.”

Hunt Tosh and Gotham took home the reserve championship in the Second Years.

The Grand Hunter Championship will be awarded on Wednesday, with the highlight $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby following on Thursday.

The final feature event during the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair will be the $225,000 Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon CSI4*, which takes place on Saturday evening.

Rachel Shoemaker Defends Her Title in the Single Horse Championship at the Devon Horse Show

Devon, PA – May 31, 2016 – It was déjà vu for Rachel Shoemaker, who earned the Single Horse Championship for the second consecutive year. Shoemaker drove away with her first blue ribbon and championship at Devon in 2015, and returned successfully to defend her title.

Shoemaker is the fifth generation of her family to compete at the Devon Horse Show, and she proudly represented her heritage driving the Willisbrook Farm’s Ralli Cart.

Along with the Challenge Trophy and tricolor ribbon, Shoemaker was presented the Championship Apron by Misdee Wrigley Miller.

Hunter Holloway Steals the Show at Tryon Spring 6 Capturing $75,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix and $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix

Mill Spring, NC – May 31, 2016 – Hunter Holloway of Topeka, KS, concluded a stellar week at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) during Tryon Spring 6, picking up major wins in the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix on Friday, May 27, aboard VDL Bravo S, and earning her biggest career win to date in the $75,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix with Cassevel. Competition at TIEC continues with Tryon Spring 7, featuring the second FEI CSI 3* of the 2016 Tryon Spring Series, beginning on Wednesday, June 1.

Holloway and Cassevel sealed the win, crossing through the jump-off timers in 43.373 seconds for the win, holding off David Blake of Wellington, FL, and Binkie, in what would have been their third consecutive grand prix win at the venue. Blake and Binkie finished in 44.86 seconds, while Bryn Sadler of Sante Fe, NM, and Bon Giorno rounded out the top three with a time of 46.257 seconds.

Holloway and Cassevel are a relatively new pair, as the 2007 Holsteiner gelding was purchased from Derek Petersen less than a year ago. Holloway rode with a confidence that allowed her to excel in the pressure situations that arose in the jump-off round.

“We got him just over a year ago and I’ve taken my time with him and tried to really make him my horse. He’s a great horse and won some in Ocala, FL, and he’s just really consistent in the big classes. We’ll do more of the FEI on him this season and try for some good results.”

David Blake and Binkie

As the first to go in the order, Holloway and Cassevel nearly didn’t make the jump-off round, as they finished the track with a single time fault, but two rides later, course designer Hector Loyola adjusted the time allowed, moving the pair through to the short course.

“I thought both courses rode so well. I thought there were lot of turns that you really had to ride smartly,” said Holloway. “There were a few spaces of good gallop track and he has a big stride. I felt like I went in with a lot of confidence because I knew he could handle the course and it suited him.”

Bryn Sadler and Bon Giorno

Speaking candidly of her biggest career win, Holloway immediately complimented the heart and never-ending try of Cassevel, who she hopes will help her secure top results in FEI ranking classes throughout the remainder of the year.

“This was the biggest class I’ve ever won and it just is so exciting. It’s a great feeling and it’s only the second grand prix I’ve done with him, so this is a big result for us,” she smiled. “I am really proud of how my horses performed this week and I am just over the moon right now.”

“It’s been a very cool week for us. Each one of our grand prix horses has won a big class this past week. I think it’s a great feeling and it also makes you appreciate your horses. It’s such a great opportunity and we’re so lucky to have the rides on these guys. They’re a really special group and I just am so ecstatic right now,” she continued.

Holloway’s groom Gerardo Lopez was awarded with the Groom’s Initiative Award presented by Mark Bellissimo and the Tryon Equestrian Partners in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the care of Holloway’s grand prix mount Cassevel.

“Gerardo is absolutely incredible with our horses and we’re so lucky to have him. He takes impeccable care of them and he’s the only one I trust with my grand prix horses. He understands them and does an amazing job,” said Holloway. “He’s such an important part of our team and I’m so happy that he was recognized for his hard work.”

Holloway Continues to Win Piloting VDL Bravo S To $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix at TIEC

Holloway found herself atop the leaderboard once more at TIEC during Tryon Spring 6, this time after clinching the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix aboard VDL Bravo S. The duo finished the track in 38.426 seconds to secure the win. Bryn Sadler and Cezarro completed the short course in 42.426 seconds for second, while Holloway also piloted Cassevel to third place with a time of 42.426 seconds.

“I was happy with the way the course rode and I felt like all of the questions that were out there on course I was able to answer and had a plan,” commented Holloway. “I thought both of the horses felt really fit and ready to play today in this class.”

The Under 25 Grand Prix Series has become an incredible stepping-stone for some of the world’s most talented riders under the age of 25, offering an opportunity to gain valuable grand prix experience in a competitive atmosphere.

“The Under 25 Series is just a great division. It’s nice having a little separation and it allows us younger kids to get some really good exposure in the bigger rings and atmospheres. In this sport a lot of the top riders are able to stay at the top of the sport for so long, I think the series is really a great way to be able to test the bigger tracks and give your horses some great experience too.”

“These classes give you a sense of confidence that I think is really important when you start looking at competing in some of the bigger classes throughout the year,” she added.

VDL Bravo S, a 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Ephepe For Ever x Urbine S), has been a strong mount for Holloway and the duo have produced several top results throughout winter and spring season. Holloway feels that there is more to come from the pair, as they’ve just begun to find a rhythm this season.

“He’s an amazing horse. Just super brave and super easy to ride. I’m never really concerned with anything on course with him. We got him a little bit over a year ago and it has been a truly amazing experience,” she explained. “It’s a great horse and we have some truly great supporters behind us with Hays Investment Corp. and I’ve had a lot of success with him. I’m very excited for the future and what we have to come this season.”

The $10,000 in bonus money will be divided between the highest ranking jumper and hunter champions, each receiving $3,000, as well as $2,000 awarded to the reserve champions with the most cumulative points.

“We have a strong contingent of Canadian riders who spend their summers in Vermont,” said Ruth Lacey, Marketing Director of the Vermont Summer Festival. “We know that riders and trainers have many choices when it comes to deciding their show schedule and we wanted to make an effort to show our appreciation of the support given to us by Canadian riders.”

A regular competitor at the Vermont Summer Festival, Tommy Feigel of Ottawa, ON, cashed in during the 2015 season by accumulating a total of 37.5 points in the jumper ring over six weeks to win $3,000 as the Canadian Circuit Jumper Champion. He also successfully competed in the hunter ring to earn a total of 74.5 total points for the Canadian Circuit Hunter Reserve Championship, pocketing $2,000.

“It’s always great to have an opportunity for special awards, but to have an award that has the ability to encourage more Canadians to come to Vermont is even better!” said Feigel. “I was lucky enough to win such a generous offering. It’s a great reason for any rider – hunter or jumper – to spend their summer in Vermont.”

Feigel’s accolades in 2015 were highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the $10,000 New Balance Welcome Stake, presented by Manchester Designer Outlets, and second place in the $30,000 Battenkill Grand Prix, presented by The Inns at Equinox. Feigel’s mount on both occasions was Analyze This, owned by Equestrian Concepts, Ltd.

After jumping to Canadian Circuit Award honors on both hunter and jumper mounts, Feigel is again focused on success in both rings for 2016.

“I have a nice group of horses, so the Canadian Circuit Awards are a goal again,” said Feigel. “I want to make a pretty good run at it with my grand prix horse, as well as make some hunter derby appearances.”

For Feigel, prize money incentives aren’t the only reason he chooses Vermont as his summer showing destination, saying, “It’s a very well-organized show, but for me and a lot of others, the area is a big part of the attraction. It has so much to offer, from great restaurants and shopping to outdoor activities.”

The Vermont Summer Festival is New England’s largest hunter/jumper competition and offers more than $750,000 in prize money, making it the richest sporting event based on purse in the state of Vermont. For over 20 years, the Vermont Summer Festival has attracted exhibitors and their families to the Manchester region in southern Vermont for great competition in an ideal summer setting.

North Salem, NY – June 3, 2016 – On September 14-18, 2016, the American Gold Cup CSI-W is set to return to scenic Old Salem Farm in North Salem, New York. The popular and prestigious show jumping classic annually attracts an international field of world-class riders for what has once again become one of America’s most popular show jumping events.

The four-decade long history of the American Gold Cup has seen stops in Tampa, Florida, Moreland Hills, Ohio and Devon, Pennsylvania, but none of the previous facilities have matched the popularity of the beautiful show grounds at Old Salem Farm in Westchester County, NY. With millions of dollars in improvements, the show has grown in popularity year after year and has consistently placed as one of the highest ranked horse show’s on the North American Rider’s Group’s list of the best shows in America.

In addition to the exciting show jumping, the American Gold Cup will host the all-important ASPCA Maclay Regionals for Zones 1 and 2.

With first-class competition returning annually, the prestigious Gold Cup Trophy displays the names of twelve United States Olympians, six of them Gold medalists, along with two Pan American Games Gold medalists and six World Cup Champions who have all led the round of honor at the American Gold Cup. This history makes the Gold Cup one of America’s toughest show jumping tests, and what has become the proving grounds of champions and the launch pad for many of the sport’s future show jumping stars.

Now entering its 46th year, and fifth year at Old Salem, the American Gold Cup competition will play host to five Longines FEI Rankings events, culminating with the prestigious $220,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping New York, where the top riders will compete for the American Gold Cup. Also on the agenda, the $86,000 American Gold Cup Qualifier, the $86,000 Fidelity Investments Classic, the $35,000 Welcome Stake and the $35,000 Derby. The American Gold Cup is one of only seven events that comprise the East Coast division of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League.

The honor of becoming part of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League was well deserved as the American Gold Cup provides a wonderful weekend of family entertainment in a gorgeous, comfortable setting just an hour north of New York City, America’s hub for entertainment and sports broadcasting. Those that attend the event can enjoy a casual family experience with easy bleacher or hillside seating with a huge variety of shopping and cuisine choices throughout the grounds.
