Clark Montgomery wins the 2016 Land Rover Great Meadow International and USA claims Nations Cup Title

(THE PLAINS, VIRGINIA) – July 10, 2016 – Clark Montgomery rode a near flawless riding performance over both days of the Land Rover Great Meadow International to take the 2016 title riding Loughan Glen.

Montgomery led the competition from start to finish after delivering a commanding dressage score of 36.3 and a double-jumping clear over show jumping and cross-country with just 1.2 time penalties finishing on a final score of 37.5.

In the stunning Virginia Plains setting, under a sun-drenched two days of competition, the 40 competitors featuring many of the world’s top eventing riders thrilled the thousands of fans who came to cheer on their equestrian heroes in just the third running of the Great Meadow International.

Marilyn Little (USA) took second place riding RF Demeter on a score of 43.8, with Great Britain’s Jodie Amos finishing third riding Wise Crack on 49.0.  Of the 40 starters on the final cross-country day, 36 completed the course with just four riders finishing with no time penalties.

A delighted Clark Montgomery said, “It means a ton to me to win here at the Great Meadow International in front of my home crowd. We had a pretty good performance and it was a great preparation run for us. He did a good dressage and I can’t complain about his show jumping at all. We had a couple of hairy moments on the cross-country but he’s such an honest horse and he still came home in a great time.”

To the delight of the home spectators, the event also served as the final preparatory event for riders from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Eventing Team prior to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The 2016 Land Rover Great Meadow International featured riders from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Eventing Team including Phillip Dutton, Lauren Kieffer, Boyd Martin, Clark Montgomery, and traveling reserve, Maya Black.

USA WIN INAUGURAL EVENTING NATIONS CUP

As well as riding for individual honors, selected riders were also representing their country in the inaugural Eventing Nations Cup at the Land Rover Great Meadow International, as the FEI and USEF chose the event to host the first-ever FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing Competition outside of Europe.

Clark Montgomery’s dominant win on Loughan Glen, along with three fast and clear cross-country rounds from the other team members gave the U.S. a clear victory in the Nations Cup taking the win on a score of 138.3. Canada finished second on 177.6, with Great Britain in third place on 254.3.

In addition to watching some of the world’s top riders in action, spectators had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the full range of luxury Land Rover vehicles displayed onsite with the ever-popular tailgating on cross-country day.

Members of the public were also privileged to be the first to see the impressive $1 Million newly constructed arena especially for this prestigious event where the dressage and show jumping took place, as well as the opening ceremony and closing presentations.

Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping: It is about time!

Trophy

Trophy

There are just a few hours to go before the first episode of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping this year! The jumping competitions of the CHIO Aachen 2016 begin tomorrow on Tuesday with a warm-up in the Main Stadium. From Wednesday to Friday, the athletes will have the chance to secure themselves a place in the grand finale on Sunday afternoon, the “Rolex Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Aachen”, which is endowed with one million Euros in prize-money.

The three qualifying jumping competitions alone are a hard trial for both horse and rider: Starting with the “Turkish Airlines Prize of Europe,” the main competition on Wednesday, the path leads to the starting list of the “Rolex Grand Prix”, via the “Mercedes-Benz Nations’ Cup” on Thursday evening and the “Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia”, the main competition on Friday. Only those riders, who manage to convince with an excellent placing in at least one of these competitions, will win one of the coveted 40 tickets for the final.
All of the top riders in the world ranking list will be battling it out to secure themselves a Major victory: The host country, Germany, is sending its best riders to the CHIO Aachen: Christian Ahlmann (ranks 2nd), Daniel Deußer (ranks 8th), Marcus Ehning (ranks 12th), Ludger Beerbaum (ranks 13th) and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (ranks 21st). The same is true of the French show-jumpers, who have three of the world’s current top ten riders: Simon Delestre, the current number one in the world ranking list, Pénélope Leprévost (ranks 4th) and Kevin Staut (ranks 7th). Incidentally, thanks to winning the bronze medal at the European Championships 2015 in Aachen, Delestre has already pre-qualified for the Grand Prix. The same applies for Gregory Wathelet from Belgium (ranks 10th), the reigning Vice European Champion, as well as for the current number three in the world ranking list, McLain Ward, who already has a place in the “Rolex Grand Prix” after taking the victory at the Pan American Games 2015. Among others, Kent Farrington (ranks 5th) and Beezie Madden (ranks 11th) will also be representing the USA.

Steve Guerdat has even pre-qualified twice – namely for claiming Olympic gold in 2012 and for his victory in this year’s World Cup Final. Since the Swiss rider is travelling to the CHIO Aachen as the winner of the Major in Geneva, all eyes will be particularly focused on him during the show: If he also succeeds in notching up the victory in the Grand Prix of Aachen, he will have achieved the second step in the direction of the Rolex Grand Slam and would then have to complete just one more hurdle at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ in Calgary to take the Grand-Slam title.

Scott Brash knows what this phenomenal victory feels like: The current number six in the world ranking list went down in sporting history last year as the first and hitherto only winner of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. The British rider has also confirmed his participation at the CHIO Aachen and is also pre-qualified for the “Rolex Grand Prix” as winner of the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ in 2015.

Will Steve Guerdat be able to assert himself against the strong field of competitors? Or will we hail in a new Major winner after the Grand Prix of Aachen on Sunday afternoon? The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping is looking forward to an exciting CHIO Aachen 2016!

The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping
The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping unites the three Majors in Aachen, Geneva and Spruce Meadows into one competition where the most prestigious and most difficult-to-win trophy on the international equestrian sport circuit is at stake. The rider, who wins all three shows in succession, wins the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping – as well as additional prize-money to the value of one million Euros.
Scott Brash from Great Britain was the first and so far only rider ever to succeed in pulling off this extraordinary feat: He won in Geneva in 2014 as well as in Aachen and Spruce Meadows in 2015.
A new cycle of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping began at the CHI Geneva 2015. The Swiss rider, Steve Guerdat, emerged as the winner. Thus, the 34-year-old has the opportunity to win his second Major in succession in Aachen.

Ali Wolff’s Quirie 2 Named Equis Best Presented Horse at Tryon Summer II CSI 3*

Mill Spring, NC – Ali Wolff (USA) and Quirie 2 won the Equis Boutique Best Presented Horse Award during CSI 3* competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), held July 6 through July 10 in Mill Spring, NC. Equis Boutique sponsors the Best Presented Horse Award at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Horse Inspection during all weeks of FEI-sanctioned competition at TIEC throughout the 2016 season.

It is no secret that Wolff, who hails from of New Albany, OH, and trains with Michele Grubb, holds her grooms and the turnout of her horses to the highest standards. She has won four Best Presented Horse Awards since the inception of the honor by Equis Boutique in 2015.

Quirie 2, owned by John Wolff, is a nine-year-old bay Bavarian Warmblood gelding by Quadrigus M x Quidam’s Rubin and was prepared for the Tryon Summer II FEI Horse Inspection by Wolff’s grooms, Mary Glier and Stacy Lawless. Their work was noticed by the TIEC ground jury, which won them Best Presented.

“It’s really a team effort to get the horses ready,” Wolff said. “The Best Presented Award is something we always try and win because I love recognizing our grooms. The jog is one of the only places to showcase what our grooms do and the effort they put in.”

While Wolff has the care of her horses at an impressive level, she also believes that the FEI Horse Inspection is an opportunity to show off horsemanship in general.

“Properly presenting a horse at the jog is more of a skilled display of horsemanship than one would think,” she said. “It’s important to have a horse that trots correctly and listens to its handler. My team is dedicated to making sure our horses can do just that.”

Wolff has had the ride on Quirie 2 for one year and hopes he is the mount that will help her work her way up the FEI rankings in the near future.

After claiming the Equis Boutique Best Presented Horse Award, Wolff piloted Quirie 2 to a fourth-place finish in the $35,000 Suncast® 1.50m Welcome.

Wolff’s Best Presented Award consisted of a commemorative plaque, as well as a pair of tendon boots from Equis Boutique partner brand, Kentucky Horsewear.

Equis Boutique will offer the Best Presented Horse Award at TIEC during the summer season at TIEC, highlighted by two upcoming CSI 4* weeks running through July 24.

Equis Boutique is a shopping experience for the discerning equestrian and offers the most convenient and luxurious choice for top equine brands to dress the horse and rider. Luis Larrazabal and Quintus Fabius Take $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix To Conclude Tryon Summer II

Mill Spring, NC – July 11, 2016 – Luis Larrazabal of Wellington, FL, and Quintus Fabius rode to a spectacular win in the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix to conclude Tryon Summer II at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), stopping the clock in 38.777 seconds for the win. Abigail McArdle of Wellington, FL, and Contessina Della Caccia almost stole the win, finishing just fifteen hundredths of a second off the winning pace to earn a time of 38.785 seconds. Louise Graves of Franklin, TN, and Zavira took third place, completing the course in 41.564 seconds. Competition at TIEC resumes on Wednesday, July 13, with the start of Tryon Summer III featuring the first FEI CSI 4* of the season.

Capturing his first Under 25 Grand Prix win with Quintus Fabius, Larrazabal explained the 2007 Hanoverian gelding (Quality x Lady P) owned by Isabela Pacanins, just recently moved up to contest this height over the past year. Speeding through the jump-off round to narrowly edge McArdle for the win, Larrazabal was elated with the victory and described his initial plan after walking the track set by Martin Otto (GER).

Luis Larrazabal and Quintus Fabius

Luis Larrazabal and Quintus Fabius

“When I walked the course I was impressed. I’ve done the other two Under 25 classes here and this was for sure the toughest so far,” he explained. “This horse is new to this height so when I was done walking the course my goal was to really just do my best.”

“I thought to myself that if I went clear around this course it would be my lucky day because he doesn’t have a lot of experience at this level,” he added.

While Quintus Fabius may still be finding his feet at the top levels, his willingness and bravery is consistent each time Larrazabal enters the ring. The pair, who have gained experience together throughout the spring season, will look to continue their success in the Under 25 classes.

Abigail McArdle and Contessina Della Caccia

Abigail McArdle and Contessina Della Caccia

“The good thing is he has a huge heart. He always tries his hardest. He doesn’t have perfect technique, but he’s very scopey and his heart and try is what makes him special,” he elaborated. “The scope is really important and I think that’s what helped us today.”

“I can put him in the spot I want and he will always try his best to get there from where I ask him,” noted Larrazabal.

The jump-off featured two other naturally fast riders in McArdle and Graves, and Larrazabal felt that he needed to push through the short course if he was to secure the win. McArdle tried hard to catch the time set by Larrazabal, finishing just short, but making for an exciting finish.

Louise Graves and Zavira

“In the jump-off, I definitely think I made up the little bit of time that separated us between fences one and two. I think both of them added one or two more strides in there than we did,” he detailed. “For the last line, we pushed for it and that’s where we sealed it.”

“I think that Abigail is generally much faster than me, especially with that horse, but today was my lucky day,” smiled Larrazabal.

Bringing up a number of young horses this season, Larrazabal hopes to continue his success throughout the summer and is eyeing a move to the FEI level during the fall circuit.

“With Quintus Fabius, I’m just so happy with our results today. This is perfect for him and I’m going to keep him in the Under 25 Grand Prix classes for the rest of the season,” he said. “I also have a couple of horses moving up that will be able to do the FEI classes later this year and we’re aiming for the fall. The rest of the horses are young and developing, which is very fun for me too.”

Noel Fauntleroy of Manakin Sabot, VA, and her own Mae, led the $10,000 High Junior/Amateur Owner Classic, taking the class with a jump-off time of 40.048 seconds and earning the fastest four fault round. Victoria Karam of Wellington, FL, and her own New Life HM, captured second place, stopping the clock in 42.471 seconds, finishing with just a single rail down. Fernando Lozinsky of Flemington, NJ, and his own Tamerlan Du Poncel secured third place with 12 faults and a time of 41.903 seconds around the short course.

Morris Arena to secure a final score of 165. Seek produced two lovely rounds aboard Valentino and used the extra size of the ring to her advantage. The duo earned an 85 in the first round and returned for the handy to pick up a score of 80. Seek, who has ridden Valentino over the course of the past year, was pleased with her rounds and was excited for the opportunity to compete in the George H. Morris Arena.

“It was a nice first round for us, because there were a lot of long bending lines and single jumps and in a big ring like the George Morris. You can pick up a nice pace to find distances,” said Seek. “In the handy, there weren’t that many places that you could really turn inside, but I did try go inside after the two stride, which I wasn’t originally planning on doing.”

“I wanted to be neat everywhere, so in general, I just turned early and made sure that everything looked very clean,” she added.

Using the class as preparation for U.S. Pony Finals hosted in Lexington, KY, later in the summer, Seek found the opportunity beneficial in understanding what she should focus on before the prestigious championship.

“This class was a big help in preparing for Pony Finals. It gave me a good feel as to how the atmosphere will feel there because this is such a big ring and the ponies never get the chance to go into a ring like that until we’re in Kentucky. Now I feel like I know what I need to work on more with each of them heading into the rest of the summer.”

Seek has established a strong relationship with Valentino and has had major success throughout the year, guiding him to numerous wins. His attitude and will to win has made him a special ride for her and she has high hopes for their future this summer.

“I started showing Valentino last year. I get called in to show him for his owner Ashley Aycox a lot. He may be the best pony I’ve ever ridden. He’s just amazing,” she commented. “He’s straightforward and has a good mind. He wants to win as much as anyone else does.”

Ukraine changes shortlist after Onischenko-affair

12.7.2016

Ukraine changed their shortlist after Alexander Onischenko sold 40 of his horses to Paul Schockemöhle. Because of this sale, Ukraine had to shorten their shortlist drastically.

Last week, it was Schockemöhle himself who confirmed he bought more than 40 horses from Onischenko. The Ukrainian horse owner owned almost every horse on the shortlist for the Olympics. It was speculated that because of the relocation of the horses, Ukraine wouldn’t be able to send a national team to the Olympics in August. The Ukraine chose 13 possible combinations to represent their country at the Olympics, but all the horses were owned or co-owned by Onoschenko. On top off that, two of those 13 horses were listed with Onischenko as rider (Calcourt Falklund and Carlina).

Today the ownership of Calcourt Falklund was changed in the FEI database, the ownership of Carlina remains in Onoschenkos hands. Due to the so called ‘Horse-Nationality Rule’, which states that the (co-)owner of a horse competing in the Olympics has to have the same nationality as the country the horse is competing for, Calcourt now can’t jump the Olympics anymore. Air Chin Z, Dinero de Laubry, Gabbiano 11, Quickdiamond and Forlap, all on the Olympic shortlist, had already changed ownership, ruling them out of the Olympics as well.

Because of that, Ukraine had to shorten their shortlist drastically, but it seems like they will be able to send a team to Rio, even without Onischenko. Cassio Rivetti, Rene Tebbel, Ulrich Kirchoff and Ferenc Szentirmai would still be able to make a team of four. The remaining Olympic horses will not be in Onischenkos ownership anymore, but they stay registered under the Ukrainian flag with their riders as co-owners next to Paul Schockemöhle.
