ABDEL SAÏD WINS THE PORSCHE GRAND PRIX OF KNOKKE HIPPIQUE

After winning last Sunday’s ‘Small’ Grand Prix, this week Egypt’s Abdel Saïd took home the victory in the ‘Big’ Grand Prix presented by Porsche. His victory was a great relief for Abdel. “You just have to do it with what you have got. I am running my own business here in Belgium, so I must do all I can to make a living. Horses get sold all the time, so because of that you just cannot always perform at the highest level yourself. The brothers Lenssens gave me to ride on California and I rode him back in Florida in March for the first time. We immediately clicked”, Abdel explains.

”This Grand Prix has been a goal for me, a true highlight. Over the last four months, we have been working and training very hard and now it is time to see the result of all this work. This victory is a reward for my whole team”, Abdel concludes smiling. France’s Patrice Delaveau could also be quite satisfied, finishing second aboard his number one horse Orient Express HDC. “Orient Express was sick back in Rotterdam. We came to Knokke to get him in competition again and I can only be glad that Orient Express showed to be recovered completely again. He jumped clear the whole week and for me, that is the most important”, Delaveau states.

Belgium’s Niel Bruynseels took the third position with Cas de Liberté Z in the Porsche Grand Prix of the Summer Circuit. “This feels good! During the five-star Rolex Grand Prix of Knokke Hippique I had to dare everything since there were so many in the jump-off back then. Now, there were only eight in the jump-off and the other riders and horses got a few rails down. I was hoping for a clear round and a good placing. The feeling was great and for me that is the most important, since Cas and I will be going to Hickstead in the following weeks to be part of the Belgian team.”

Germany’s Marc Bettinger was first to go in the jump-off with Balouzino and gave it a safe go. Abdel Saïd and California proved it could be done no less than three seconds faster!

Deutsche Bank Prize with goose-bump dressage moments

$

17 Jul  2016

“I’m curious now!” the National Dressage Coach, Monica Theodorescu, said with a sigh of relief, after she greeted her three riders after their performances in the Deutsche Bank Prize at the CHIO Aachen 2016 – whereby none of three had been awarded a score under 86.925 percent. In the history of German dressage in Aachen this has never happened before: Three pairs over 80 percent in the Grand Prix, the Prize of the Tesch Family, three times over 80 percent in the MEGGLE Prize, the Grand Prix Spécial. That is an absolute record. And then the same three even took it a step further in the Deutsche Bank Prize by claiming the top three rankings there as well.

Kristina Bröring-Sprehe won the most famous prize in the dressage sport in the most famous dressage arena in the world with a score of 88.825 percent, a personal record. Isabell Werth came second with Weihegold OLD on a score of 86.950 percent, followed closely by Dorothee Schneider with Showtime FRH on 86.925 percent. Rio here we come!

Kristina Bröring-Sprehe reported to the National Coach (who couldn’t watch her, because she was helping her two other protégés warm-up for the competition – “But I heard the music and knew exactly where she was in her choreography!”) after her ride somewhat timidly about the only mistake that she had made in the first double pirouette. But then when the scores flashed up, this moment was forgotten. “I am delighted,” sighed the number one in the world rankings, who almost beat the multi-championess Charlotte Dujardin (GBR) with Valegro at the European Championships last year. She came just a few points behind her. The two will come up against each other again soon…

Isabell Werth’s world was back in order again today. She was eliminated from the WOTAX Prize yesterday, because she made two errors of course – totally untypical for the many-time Olympic gold-medallist, World and European Champion! Today, she knew what route to take – even though she rode the slightly revised freestyle routine to new music, a 1970s Italo pop medley, for the first time today with Weihegold. The highlights of the freestyle have a special soundtrack: “Dance Samba with me” – very fitting!

Dorothee Schneider and Showtime FRH were the next pair to provide goose-bump moments today. Showtime performs to a piece of music that couldn’t be more fitting for the stately dark bay horse: the E guitar sounds of the queen classic “The Show must go on”. One can hardly believe Schneider that this show-maker used to be a rather shy and introverted horse. She has turned the 10-year-old gelding into a world-class horse that hasn’t reached the zenith of his ability by a long way yet! We look forward to welcoming Showtime at CHIO Aachen 2017 – let’s wait and see if he can perhaps leave his colleagues trailing behind him then.

Jürgen Fitschen, Senior Advisor of Deutsche Bank AG (2.v.r.) and ALRV president Carl Meulenbergh congratulating the winner.

CHIO Aachen 2016: World-class sport, a spectacular show and innovative concepts

$
0
0

Frank Kemperman, Chairman of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e.V. (ALRV) and Michael Mronz, General Manager of the Aachener Reitturnier GmbH (ART) drew a thoroughly positive balance for the CHIO Aachen 2016. When the gates close, 348,200 spectators will ultimately have visited the traditional showgrounds at the Aachen Soers over the ten days, “they have celebrated a huge festival,” commented Kemperman. The sporting highlight so far: The emotional victory of the German show-jumping team in the Mercedes-Benz Nations’ Cup on Thursday evening. “A full house, world-class sport, an unforgettable atmosphere – what more could one ask for,” stated Kemperman. The best indication for enthusiastic spectators: The ticket sales for the CHIO Aachen 2017 (July 14th-23rd) are already going extremely well.

This year, the spectators not only experienced world-class sport, but also a high-class supporting programme. For example, the Opening Ceremony was acclaimed to have had a fantastic show character, 90 minutes of turbulent and spectacular entertainment, broadcast live on WDR. Almost 40,000 people watched the CHIO prelude live in the stadium – including the Swedish royal couple, their Majesties Queen Silvia and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Indeed many famous guests also visited the major sporting event. The boss of FC Bayern, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (“Football has Wembley, equestrian sport has Aachen”) came to the Aachen Soers as well as the Federal Defence Minister, Ursula von der Leyen or TV stars like Simon Helberg (“Howard Wolowitz” from the successful US sitcom “The Big Bang Theory”). The German Sport Aid Foundation used the platform of the CHIO Aachen to confer the most renowned prize in the world of German sport, the Golden Sport Pyramid. Bernhard Langer, Germany’s golfer of the century was awarded the prize. “Aachen has established itself as the `place to be´,” said Michael Mronz.

The almost 120-year tradition also wants to add further successful chapters in other areas. “To this end, we have massively expanded our online activities, particularly in the social media sector,” confirmed Mronz. A totally new concept of working together with bloggers was introduced at the CHIO Aachen 2016 to enable the fans of the CHIO Aachen “a different and new perspective of the event.” In this way, lifestyle and society themes come more under focus. This idea will be further extended in future. Along with other innovative concepts that the CHIO Aachen organisers are developing together with their official technology partner, SAP. For example, in 2016 a very successful tracking app was presented for the first time that allowed the fans to track the athletes in the DHL Prize, the cross-country competition of the eventers, virtually in real-time. And the latest ideas from Aachen for the show-jumping will no doubt also be inspiring.

The CHIO Aachen will come to a close today with the traditional “Farewell to the Nations”. However, prior to that the winners in the two most famous Grand Prix in the world, the Rolex Grand Prix in show jumping and the Deutsche Bank Prize of the dressage riders will be determined.

Merrill Harvey and Favoriet Win $5,000 NAL Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at Vermont Summer Festival

East Dorset, Vermont – Merrill Harvey of Huntington, NY, and Favoriet concluded the second week of the Vermont Summer Festival with a win in the $5,000 NAL Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, on Sunday, July 17. The Vermont Summer Festival runs for six consecutive weeks from July 5 through August 14, at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT.

Eighteen-year-old Harvey topped a competitive field of 30 horses over courses designed by Paul Jewell of Lambertville, NJ, on Sunday afternoon. She and Favoriet, an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Harvey Equine Ventures, LLC, were one of 11 pairs to advance to the jump-off. Their time of 33.96 seconds over the short course was the fastest of four double-clear rounds to give them the win.

Haleigh Landrigan of Marstons Mills, MA, was a single second shy of the lead aboard her own C Mons Venus to finish in second on a time of 34.94. Catalina Peralta of Geneva, FL, and Conti, owned by Wendy Peralta, took third in 35.66 seconds, while Lauren Linder of Warren, NJ, and her own Nazario 2 finished fourth in 36.63 seconds. Gillian Kelley of Rye, FL, piloted Zena D, owned by Emerald Isle Jumpers, to the fastest four-fault effort over the jump-off course in 34.66 seconds to round out the top five ribbons.

This week marked Harvey’s first visit to the Vermont Summer Festival where she and Favoriet also picked up a fourth-place ribbon in the low junior/amateur-owner jumper division earlier earlier in the week. For Sunday’s classic win, Harvey was presented with a pair of Tonic paddock boots and half chaps from sponsor Schockemoehle, as well as her share of the prize money.

“I love it here,” said the young rider, who trains with Michael Zukerman at Lynnewood Stables. “During the first round, Favoriet was really good and I was just focused on getting in under the time allowed.”

Despite a hard rub in the first round, luck was on Harvey’s side and she advanced to the jump-off saying, “she felt ready to go, so we went for it and it was awesome. I cried when I came out of the ring because I was so happy.”

Sunday’s win was a peak in Harvey’s career with Favoriet after purchasing the mare last spring from German rider, Mattias Hollberg.

“We have had a lot of rough patches together,” said Harvey. “I fell off her the second week in Ocala this winter and broke my ankle, but now I am finally getting it all together with her. She’s been so great for me. She’s a big horse that was doing the grand prix before I got her, so I had to learn how to ride her.

“I love the feeling of a fast horse and she has tremendous scope,” continued Harvey. “Now, when I get in a groove with her she is awesome around the course.”

After finding success in the lows, Harvey’s most immediate goal with Favoriet is to move up to the high junior/amateur-owner jumper division.

Richie Moloney and Slieveanorra Close Out Tryon Summer III With Win in $35,000 1.50m Suncast® Classic

Mill Spring, NC – July 17, 2016 – Richie Moloney (IRL) and Slieveanorra made the most of their time in the George H. Morris Arena today at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), topping the $35,000 1.50m Suncast® Classic, bringing a close to the final day of FEI classes at Tryon Summer III. Moloney and Slieveanorra jumped past Samuel Parot (CHI) and Couscous Van Orti, who were the only other pair to advance to the short course. The winning combination stopped the clock in 40.787 seconds, while Parot collected four faults and crossed through the timers in 40.40 seconds. Alison Robitaille (USA) and Sensation 21 took third place, completing the fastest four fault trip around the original course, finishing in 75.54 seconds. Competition at TIEC resumes on Wednesday, July 20, with Tryon Summer IV, which will feature an FEI CSI 4* and conclude on Sunday, July 24.

Moloney and Slieveanorra went late in the class order, which featured 23 entries and was set by this week’s FEI course designer Manuel Esparza (MEX). While Moloney was surprised that only two combinations moved forward to contest the second round, he was pleased with the way Slieveanorra handled the track, as the 2002 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Voltaire x Flagmount Diamond) owned by Equinimity LLC, made efficient work of the difficult course.

Richie Moloney and Slieveanorra

“I thought after I walked it that there might be one or two more clears, but it proved to be pretty difficult for everyone. It was a long way around and I think that also it’s the end of the week and some of the horses may have been feeling less fresh than at the beginning of the week,” said Moloney.

Slieveanorra was originally sourced by Moloney’s brother from Ireland early in his career and has been successfully guided to numerous top finishes in FEI classes around the world. The gelding produced a valiant effort around both tracks, which helped the duo secure the win.

“This horse is pretty quick as well, so I said that I would try to go fast enough to try to secure the win. I wanted to go fast because I knew that even if we had one down there was still a chance that we could take the class depending on Samuel’s ride,” he added.

Moloney is careful to regulate and select specific classes where he and his team feel Slieveanorra will have the opportunity to be the most successful. While age is a factor, Moloney said that Slieveanorra feels better than ever and continues to love his job and the thrill of competition.

Alison Robitaille and Sensation 21

“He’s fourteen now and is an Irish horse that originally came from my brother when he was just nine,” he explained. “He’s a very cool horse and I’ve been able to have the ride on him for most of his career. We will still use him to do the odd grand prix, but we really try to save him because he’s a bit older.”

“We typically put him in the speed classes and the 1.50m classes. He enjoys these classes and always seems to do very well,” he detailed.

Moloney had a successful campaign at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta, earlier in the summer but is happy to have returned to the venue, where he has had incredible success over the past two seasons, including a top ten finish in the $216,000 Hollow Creek Farm Grand Prix CSI 4* last night aboard Carrabis Z, also owned by Equinimity LLC.

“We’re happy to be back here at Tryon. We did a few of the weeks at Spruce Meadows and will be here for the remainder of the series,” detailed Moloney. “After next week the horses will get a good break before we look at some of the bigger classes coming up later in the summer and then we’ll come back here for the fall.”

Alma Bjorklund of Wellington, FL, and her own Loro Piana Ballyleck rode to victory in the $10,000 High Junior/Amateur Owner Classic presented by Asheville Regional Airport, topping the class of 22 entries with a jump-off time of 39.356 seconds. Nicole Loochtan of Lincolnshire, IL, and her own Carla de Kalvarie Z took second place honors with a time of 41.871 seconds. Bjorklund also picked up third place aboard her own S.I.E.C. Contessina, dashing through finish in 41.006 seconds.

Competition at TIEC resumes on Wednesday, July 20, welcoming the final week of the 2016 Tryon Summer Series, which will feature an FEI CSI 4* including the $216,000 Tryon Estates Grand Prix CSI 4* on Saturday, July 23. Interview with Philipp Weishaupt after his Major victory at the CHIO Aachen 2016

Philipp WEISHAUPT riding LB Convall (GER) winners of the Rolex Aachen Grand Prix

The picture enclosed shows Philipp Weishaupt, winner of the “Rolex Grand Prix” at the CHIO Aachen 2016. It can be used free of charge (picture: Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping/Kit Houghton).

Congratulations on your victory in the “Rolex Grand Prix” at the CHIO Aachen, which you certainly had to fight hard for…

You can say that again! When I walked the course it was clear to me that it was going to be very, very difficult today. The obstacles were very demanding, the time was very tight. As the first to go in the class, I didn’t have the best starting position either. Which is why I am all the more delighted that it ultimately sufficed for the victory. Everything simply went so well for me today, it was a perfect day. I have dreamt about winning here as long as I can remember. When I came to the CHIO Aachen the first time at the age of five and walked passed the winners’ board, I thought: I would like my name to stand there one day! But I never dreamt that this would become true. To be honest, I still can’t believe it.

You just spent four weeks in Calgary taking part in several international shows there in Spruce Meadows. Was that perhaps the key to your success? Did you bring the motivation from Calgary with you to Aachen?

Yes, that really helped me, and I believe it was decisive for my success. I was able to prepare my horse “LB Convall” excellently for the impressive atmosphere in Aachen, so that he felt at home here from the very beginning. That was precisely my plan and it certainly paid off!

How was the “Rolex Grand Prix” for you?

It was simply phenomenal – from the very first moment through to the prize-ceremony. There is always a “full house” in Aachen, the crowd loves the sport. Then, that huge grass ring and the long history of the show. Being able to ride here is simply indescribable. I am especially proud to have won the “Rolex Grand Prix”, because Rolex simply stands for top sport. I can’t thank everyone enough for this unique day!

After this Major victory your personal Rolex Grand Slam has begun. How do you rate your chances of claiming the title?

What Scott Brash succeeded in doing last year was simply unique. To win two Majors in succession that alone is very, very difficult – not to mention the Grand Slam victory! Hence I am not expecting to follow Scott’s lead here. However, “Convall” is an exceptional horse. He is just nine years old and hasn’t competed at many top class shows yet. The fact that he was able to put in such a performance against the best pairs in the world here in Aachen, shows how special he is. So the chance is there!

So we will see you again at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ in Calgary in September?

Definitely! I wanted to compete there anywhere, whatever the outcome here in Aachen was. Of course, thanks to the Major victory it is even more worthwhile now. I am looking forward to taking on this challenge!
